0:10 - 0:13RJ: "Cwrs Carlam" is a teaching approach
that was designed to enable pupils -
0:13 - 0:16who come from English
medium primary schools -
0:16 - 0:19to develop the linguistic skills
in the Welsh language -
0:19 - 0:22that they're fluent by the time
they leave the comprehensive. -
0:22 - 0:26The idea behind it is that
by the time they're in year 9, -
0:26 - 0:28so after three years
in a comprehensive school, -
0:28 - 0:33the pupils will be in a position
to set their GCSEs in Welsh Language -
0:33 - 0:39and they will then go on in year 10 and 11
to study for their AAS and Welsh language. -
0:40 - 0:43Beyond that, they will leave
the school when ready -
0:43 - 0:48to further education or employment
with the language skill developed. -
0:48 - 0:51BW: Well, the Cwrs Carlam obviously
gives the pupils an opportunity -
0:51 - 0:53to live themselves
within the Welsh language -
0:54 - 0:57and to hear the Welsh language
within a classroom and around school -
0:57 - 1:00and the extracurricular activities
that we have on offer -
1:00 - 1:04and also to gain
two extra qualifications early. -
1:05 - 1:08We have two transition teachers employed
by the school in the primary school -
1:08 - 1:12so they're involved with teaching
their pupils on a weekly basis -
1:12 - 1:15and they are then involved with
-
1:15 - 1:18working in collaboration with the primary
school teachers and assessing them -
1:19 - 1:21on a termly basis
in the language skills: -
1:21 - 1:24reading, writing, and oracy, of course.
-
1:24 - 1:28With the main emphasis on oracy
within the Key Stage 2. -
1:28 - 1:30At the end of year 6,
-
1:30 - 1:35their results with regards to the key
stage levels in Welsh second language -
1:35 - 1:38as well as teacher assessments
across the board in the core subjects, -
1:39 - 1:41CAT scores then decide
-
1:41 - 1:45which pupils are suitable
for the fast-track class. -
1:45 - 1:49With any language if it's about speaking
and gaining the confidence -
1:49 - 1:53so giving them as enough opportunities
to hear and use the Welsh language -
1:53 - 1:54is of the utmost importance,
-
1:54 - 1:59and that is why we teach those five
other subjects bilingually as well. -
1:59 - 2:03that would be history, RE, PE, PSC
-
2:04 - 2:06so that they can hear
the language all the time. -
2:06 - 2:09LC: In doing other subjects
through the medium of Welsh's. -
2:09 - 2:11I think has widened
our grasp with that subject -
2:11 - 2:13and give us a more
complex grasp with that subject -
2:13 - 2:16and then in terms of Welsh
giving us a wide vocabulary. -
2:16 - 2:19I think it has definitely improved
my confidence linguistically -
2:19 - 2:21and just in communication
and teamwork in skills -
2:21 - 2:23FT: I thought it'd be
quite a hard transition -
2:23 - 2:25because I'm from
an English-medium primary school -
2:25 - 2:29but I found that it was quite easy
because this is not on your own -
2:29 - 2:31you've got all the teachers
helping you as well -
2:31 - 2:37and then soon you doing subjects
in Welsh like history, geography, and RE. -
2:37 - 2:39And soon you remember words in history
-
2:39 - 2:42like 'canrif' is century
and 'chwyldro' is revolution -
2:42 - 2:45so it was much easier
than I thought it was going to be. -
2:45 - 2:51BW: The results with regards to Welsh
at Key Stage 3, 4, and 5 are excellent -
2:51 - 2:55and, you know, well above national
averages and local authority averages. -
2:55 - 3:01So I definitely think that it's benefited
the school and the pupils in general.
