RnD-Africa: Super Electric Bikes made in Ghana
-
0:00 - 0:02Do you see where I am seated?
-
0:02 - 0:07This is what we bring you on this
episode of R&D Africa on AAU TV. -
0:07 - 0:12The spotlight has been put on the young
Lawrence Adjei, who has been able to make -
0:12 - 0:16this electronic motorcycle
from dead laptop batteries. -
0:16 - 0:18Stay tuned.
We'll bring you more. -
0:26 - 0:31In an era where environmental protection,
fitness and green travel -
0:31 - 0:34are increasingly being valued and
practiced by people, -
0:34 - 0:37what comes to mind when
transportation that allows you -
0:37 - 0:39to avoid road traffic congestion,
-
0:40 - 0:42be green and environmentally
friendly is mentioned. -
0:46 - 0:50Electric bicycles or e-bikes
are equipped with electric devices -
0:50 - 0:53activated to assist
or replace peddling. -
0:53 - 0:55They provide a number of benefits.
-
0:55 - 1:00They are fuel efficient, faster,
reduces traffic congestion -
1:00 - 1:02and are mostly non-pollutant.
-
1:04 - 1:07Inventors mainly rely on
batteries such as lithium-ion, -
1:08 - 1:09nickel-cadmium,
-
1:09 - 1:11lithium-cobalt batteries
-
1:11 - 1:12lead acid,
-
1:12 - 1:14nickel-metal hydrate,
-
1:14 - 1:15lithium-magnanese
-
1:15 - 1:18and lithium-ion polymer
batteries as the accessories. -
1:19 - 1:22Interestingly, a young
Ghanaian, Lawrence Adjei -
1:22 - 1:26has added to the innovations
in the electric bike industry. -
1:26 - 1:29He uses sports laptop
batteries, which he purchases -
1:29 - 1:34from scrap yards and computer
shops in Accra to make his unique e-bikes. -
1:35 - 1:38He is known to be the first
Ghanian to make electric bicylces -
1:38 - 1:42from sports laptop batteries
and he is self-taught. -
1:45 - 1:50I stay close to Lawrence and
I happen to be his co-helper. -
1:50 - 1:52This is not my first time riding.
-
1:52 - 1:54I've been riding for two years now.
-
1:54 - 1:56The experience is different.
-
1:57 - 2:00Different. I can't even compare
because riding a normal bicycle... -
2:00 - 2:01is full of pain.
-
2:01 - 2:06And then you actually admire the
kind of kilometers you need to go. -
2:06 - 2:10So this is really different compared
to the ones I have ever used. -
2:10 - 2:14This has three gears
and then the others don't. -
2:14 - 2:21It has a brake which charges the battery
back when applying, the others don't have. -
2:21 - 2:25It has a USB spot which
can charge your phone -
2:25 - 2:26or use a USB light.
-
2:27 - 2:28Which others don't have.
-
2:29 - 2:32And then it also has a bell,
the others didn't have a bell. -
2:33 - 2:37And then the brakes are instant stop.
-
2:37 - 2:38They stop instantly.
-
2:38 - 2:41Next. Coming to the battery,
-
2:41 - 2:43it has a large capacity,
which you can even -
2:43 - 2:46give a house a light.
-
2:49 - 2:53This is where Mr. Lawrence
AJ makes all the inventions. -
2:53 - 2:56This is where the
creation of electric bicycles -
2:56 - 2:59made out of dead
laptop batteries happens and -
2:59 - 3:01I'm currently here with Mr. Lawrence.
-
3:02 - 3:04Take us through
the process involved in the -
3:04 - 3:07usage of these batteries
to make the electric bicycle. -
3:07 - 3:10So you have the batteries here.
-
3:10 - 3:12So, you just crack them like this.
-
3:13 - 3:15You sometimes bend it or...
-
3:16 - 3:17or use a plier.
-
3:17 - 3:18Okay
-
3:22 - 3:24You can see that we
don't use all the cells. -
3:25 - 3:26This one is here, the bud.
-
3:27 - 3:29- Okay
- You can't use this one, so -
3:29 - 3:30You find a different one.
-
3:31 - 3:32Try another one.
-
3:39 - 3:40Same.
-
3:40 - 3:43This one is okay, So you take
like the motherboard -
3:43 - 3:44- of the battery. So...
- Okay -
3:44 - 3:45So taking them off
-
3:46 - 3:49[Inaudible]
-
3:55 - 3:57Then take the cells out like this.
-
3:57 - 3:59Okay
-
4:00 - 4:03So in total, how many
of these do you need? -
4:03 - 4:04
-
4:04 - 4:06
