Larry Ward here

Not Synced
The Earth Gate
-
Not Synced
is an interweaving of several different disciplines and practices
-
Not Synced
they are all based in, rooted in, the four foundations of mindfulness
-
Not Synced
as we know them in English
-
Not Synced
in Pali it is as Satipaṭṭhāna
-
Not Synced
and that means the direct path to realization
-
Not Synced
so i want to review a little bit of the four foundations, and of course in Buddhism as usual
-
Not Synced
there are several versions of this.
-
Not Synced
All four still be the same, but there's in the fourth one, there's some variations
-
Not Synced
and you're free to do the research
and see what might be most helpful for you
-
Not Synced
but I'm going to use four that
I'm most familiar with practicing
-
Not Synced
and share this with you, so first, a recap on mindfulness.
-
Not Synced
Mindfulness has three qualities
-
Not Synced
It has the quality of depth awareness and attention,
-
Not Synced
it has secondarily
equality of intention
-
Not Synced
the intention to be alert, the intention to be awake
-
Not Synced
so that when our mind wanders from where
we were going to put our attention
-
Not Synced
we become conscious of that or this meta-awareness
and we are able to consciously bring our attention back
-
Not Synced
to this object of our observation or looking
-
Not Synced
or experiencing
-
Not Synced
and the third is clear comprehension
-
Not Synced
Mindfulness is not a practice simply...
-
Not Synced
to practice it
-
Not Synced
it also has within it the invitation
to clearly see and feel, and understand
what your experience is
-
Not Synced
your lived experience, to being human
in the moment
-
Not Synced
and these four foundations
-
Not Synced
are four ways or means of practicing
-
Not Synced
to become skillful in your awareness
-
Not Synced
in your meta awareness, in your clear
comprehension of your experience of four things
-
Not Synced
the experience of the body
-
Not Synced
the experience of feelings as feeling is
understood in Buddhism
-
Not Synced
the experience of the mind
-
Not Synced
and the experience of the contents
of your mind
-
Not Synced
so I'll quickly go through those
-
Not Synced
the other thing I want to say is
every part of the earth gate
-
Not Synced
every meditation, every exercise
-
Not Synced
everything we do
-
Not Synced
you will find reflected here
-
Not Synced
in the four foundations of mindfulness.
-
Not Synced
Now many of you are already familiar with mindfulness of breathing
-
Not Synced
I'll get to that because that
is the first section
-
Not Synced
of the mindfulness of the body,
contemplating mindfulness of the body
-
Not Synced
the Ānāpānasati Sutta, the mindfulness of
breathing is how you begin to enter into
your contemplation of the body
-
Not Synced
because the breath is there
-
Not Synced
the breath is not contrived
-
Not Synced
It is a natural, lived occurrence
-
Not Synced
and so it has been learned that
that's the best way
-
Not Synced
easiest vehicle in which to begin to
bring
-
Not Synced
awareness to the body
-
Not Synced
and the mind
-
Not Synced
intention to the body and the mind
-
Not Synced
and clear comprehension of our lived experience
-
Not Synced
first is mindfulness of the body
-
Not Synced
and which is really what the Earth Gate is focusing on
-
Not Synced
the physicalness of the body
-
Not Synced
the breathing
-
Not Synced
are all parts of this
-
Not Synced
the cemetery meditations, which has been recorded
already for you, and is there
-
Not Synced
the impermanence meditation
is another way to say that
-
Not Synced
