Chris Cornell - You Never Knew My Mind (From The Cash Cabin)

  • 0:16 - 0:20
    Invited by John Carter Cash
  • 0:20 - 0:20
    I participated in this album
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    Chris Cornell
  • 0:23 - 0:28
Johnny's poem with no songs sent to me
  • 0:28 - 0:33
I was consulted that I wanted to finish it as an album work
  • 0:33 - 0:37
    Just use the found material
  • 0:44 - 0:48
I think Johnny's idea is superb
  • 0:49 - 0:52
From my point of view and the other's point of view
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    I bother writing two poems
  • 0:55 - 0:59
I wrote separately the two positions separately
  • 1:05 - 1:11
It was necessary to decide the resolution and change the subject one by one
  • 1:11 - 1:16
And to organize it into one song
  • 1:16 - 1:21
I decided the part to repeat and reconsidered the composition
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    I was nervous.
  • 1:28 - 1:34
If you do not have confidence that Johnny likes it
  • 1:34 - 1:37
There is no point in making this song
  • 1:47 - 1:52
I met Johnny twice and I got him very kind
  • 1:52 - 1:55
    It was greatly influenced musically
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    It also covered my songs
  • 1:59 - 2:04
Even among my favorite artists since then
  • 2:05 - 2:09
I feel it as a big presence in particular
  • 2:28 - 2:32
Johnny escaped the noise and built this cabin
  • 2:33 - 2:37
I still can not believe I am here
  • 2:37 - 2:41
I wonder if I can tell more impressions next week
  • 2:45 - 2:46
I feel like I am still in my dream now

About the album:
In 1996, Johnny Cash recorded a cover of Soundgarden’s hit “Rusty Cage,” written by frontman Chris Cornell, on his Grammy-winning album ‘Unchained.’ Twenty years later, Cornell wrote the next chapter in this unique musical relationship by setting a newly discovered poem of Cash’s to music, to create the stunning all-new song “You Never Knew My Mind.” It was recorded at the historic Cash Cabin Studio in Hendersonville, TN, and marks one of Cornell’s final solo recordings.

The song is featured on ‘Johnny Cash: Forever Words,’ out April 6 on Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony Music Entertainment. The album is comprised of Cash’s unknown poetry, lyrics, and letters, now set to music by an all-star array of contemporary artists. Along with Cornell, the album features new songs by Ruston Kelly & Kacey Musgraves, Rosanne Cash, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Kris Kristofferson & Willie Nelson, Brad Paisley, John Mellencamp, Carlene Carter, Elvis Costello, The Jayhawks and more.

For nearly 60 years, the words of Johnny Cash have reached across cultural, spiritual and ideological borders. He was not only a singer of great songs, but a teller of universal truths about justice, faith, love, and independence. It was in this spirit that Johnny Cash: Forever Words, was created.

Recorded primarily at The Cash Cabin Studio in Hendersonville, Tennessee and co-produced by John Carter Cash and Steve Berkowitz, Johnny Cash: Forever Words is also the musical companion to the best-selling "Forever Words: The Unknown Poems," a volume of Cash's unpublished writing edited by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon.
