What is Trump Thinking?

  • 0:00 - 0:04
Donald Trump is wreaking havoc on the world
    stage!
  • 0:04 - 0:09
But is this all part of his master plan?
  • 0:09 - 0:11
Welcome to America Uncovered, I’m Chris Chappell.
  • 0:11 - 0:18
In just his first month, Donald Trump has
taken a wrecking ball to establishment norms.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
From a tariff war with Mexico and Canada…
  • 0:21 - 0:25
To threatening to gain control of
    Greenland and the Panama Canal.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
Let’s not forget burning USAID to the ground…
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    And slashing the defense budget.
  • 0:30 - 0:33
Oh, there’s also suspending aid to Ukraine…
  • 0:33 - 0:36
And talking with Putin on ending the war.
  • 0:36 - 0:41
To the mainstream media, Trump isn’t
    just misguided, he’s absolutely insane!
  • 0:41 - 0:46
But the MAGA crowd say that’s just
what Trump wants them to think!
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    So what’s really going on?
  • 0:49 - 0:56
It all boils down to a strategy that president
Richard Nixon used called “Madman Theory.”
  • 0:56 - 1:00
And no, it has nothing to do with
    alcoholic 1960s advertising execs.
  • 1:00 - 1:06
The goal of Madman Theory is to convince
    your enemy that you’re unpredictable…
  • 1:06 - 1:09
unhinged even – you know, a madman –
  • 1:09 - 1:15
and that if provoked, you will rain the absolute fire of God
  • 1:15 - 1:19
    down on your enemies
    - even if it kills you in the process!
  • 1:19 - 1:26
Nixon, an otherwise boring middle-class Quaker
who enjoyed bowling and luaus in his free time,
  • 1:26 - 1:30
    repeatedly cast himself as
    a Cold War fanatic willing
  • 1:30 - 1:36
to plunge the world into thermonuclear
    armageddon should the need arise.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
    Thankfully Nixon wasn’t around during
    the pandemic.
  • 1:39 - 1:40
    I’m fairly certain the lack
  • 1:40 - 1:44
of TP at stores would have been reason
    enough for thermonuclear armageddon ().
  • 1:44 - 1:49
Nixon used this strategy in 1969 when
    US intelligence received reports
  • 1:49 - 1:55
that the Soviet Union was considering a nuclear
strike on the People’s Republic of China.
  • 1:55 - 1:59
    This followed border skirmishes between
the two countries near Zhenbao Island.
  • 1:59 - 2:03
    And although a staunch anticommunist
like Nixon might not, in theory,
  • 2:03 - 2:07
    mind seeing the two communist
    superpowers fight each other,
  • 2:07 - 2:10
    the threat of nuclear escalation
was just too much, even for him.
  • 2:10 - 2:15
So he dispatched nuclear-armed B-52 bombers
  • 2:15 - 2:18
to fly patrols where they would be detected
  • 2:18 - 2:23
by the Soviets and allegedly sent a message
to Moscow stating that if they attacked China,
  • 2:23 - 2:28
    the US would launch nuclear
    attacks on 130 Soviet cities.
  • 2:28 - 2:31
In other words, if one of you
goes down, we’re all going down.
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    Guess what? It worked!
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    The
    Soviet Union scrapped its plans,
  • 2:36 - 2:38
and a massive disaster was averted.
  • 2:38 - 2:42
    Nixon wasn’t
actually a madman - he only played one on TV.
  • 2:42 - 2:47
And looking at today, it seems Trump
may be dipping into Nixon’s playbook.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
He loves scaring journalists with stuff like…
  • 2:50 - 2:55
    “David, I mean, I know you’re a sophisticated guy.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    The world is a mess
  • 2:57 - 3:01
. The world is as angry
    as it gets.
  • 3:01 - 3:04
What, you think this is gonna cause a little more anger?
  • 3:04 - 3:06
The world is an angry place.”
  • 3:06 - 3:09
The thing is, this has gotten some results in the past,
  • 3:09 - 3:13
    like when he threatened Kim
Jong-un with his big ol’ nuclear button…
  • 3:13 - 3:16
Eventually leading to a diplomatic breakthrough,
  • 3:16 - 3:20
with Trump becoming the first US
    president to visit North Korea.
  • 3:20 - 3:25
So maybe that’s what Trump is trying
to do: he’s not ripping up the postwar liberal consensus
  • 3:25 - 3:30
    - he’s just using some
hard-edged diplomacy to preserve the peace.
  • 3:30 - 3:35
Or… Maybe Trump does want to completely
demolish the world order and create his own!
  • 3:35 - 3:40
Remember, Nixon famously went to China in
1972 in order to open diplomatic relations
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    with China and Mao.
  • 3:42 - 3:46
    These ties led to
the weakening of the Soviet Union.
  • 3:46 - 3:50
With Trump, it seems he may be
    doing a reverse-Nixon with Russia.
  • 3:50 - 3:55
As it stands, America could probably take China
in a one-on-one fight over the South China Sea.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
It could probably do the same with Russia if
it came to a war in Europe.
  • 3:58 - 4:02
But both China and Russia at the same time?
  • 4:02 - 4:05
    That’s
a bit more iffy. As it stands,
  • 4:05 - 4:11
the US is overstretched with commitments in
Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
  • 4:11 - 4:14
Heck, we may even find ourselves in
a war on our own southern border,
  • 4:14 - 4:20
fighting powerful drug cartels who have recently
earned the designation of terrorist organizations.
  • 4:20 - 4:23
    And all this is happening
as the US is being crushed
  • 4:23 - 4:27
    under a multi-trillion dollar national debt…
  • 4:27 - 4:31
    Which the administration hopes to
remedy with cuts to defense spending,
  • 4:31 - 4:34
meaning even fewer resources to go around.
  • 4:34 - 4:37
Oh, and don’t forget America doesn’t have the troops
  • 4:37 - 4:41
    - a decade-long recruitment
    crisis plaguing the military.
  • 4:41 - 4:47
Since it can’t be everywhere at once, the US has
to pick and choose its battles… and its allies.
  • 4:47 - 4:52
At home, the US can essentially lock down
its hemisphere by acquiring Panama and
  • 4:52 - 4:56
    Greenland, but abroad, it may
have to give up ground in some
  • 4:56 - 5:00
places in order to protect what
    it believes is truly important.
  • 5:00 - 5:06
For example, if Putin somehow managed to
roll across Europe and subjugate EU nations,
  • 5:06 - 5:09
that would be a huge loss, for
    sure.
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    A lot of trade, technology,
  • 5:11 - 5:14
not to mention American prestige would vanish.
  • 5:14 - 5:16
But imagine if China seized Taiwan.
  • 5:16 - 5:19
    The
    loss of its semiconductor factories
  • 5:19 - 5:26
would devastate not just America’s economy but its
technological advantage going into the future.
  • 5:26 - 5:28
Or worse: imagine if Japan fell.
  • 5:28 - 5:31
We’d lose access to Pocky and “Yakuza” games.
  • 5:31 - 5:35
    And that is definitely
not a world any of us want to live in.
  • 5:35 - 5:36
    So what’s Trump gonna do?
  • 5:36 - 5:41
    Well, as you can
probably guess, he’s focusing on CHYNA.
  • 5:41 - 5:44
I mean, come on, it’s sort of his whole thing.
    “China.” (x10)
  • 5:49 - 5:54
Not only does it seem that he sees China
as a far greater threat than Russia,
  • 5:54 - 6:00
but unlike the Europeans, China’s neighbors
are more than willing and able to help the US.
  • 6:00 - 6:04
    Think countries like Japan,
    Australia, the Philippines, even Vietnam
  • 6:04 - 6:08
    . Their militaries are
armed and ready to take on anything.
  • 6:08 - 6:12
Compare that to Europe, whose aging
    populations and disjointed governments
  • 6:12 - 6:16
    can’t - or won’t - meet their NATO
    spending obligations.
  • 6:16 - 6:21
Why protect them when the Pacific nations are
the only ones taking this seriously?
  • 6:21 - 6:27
Sure, a few of the EU nations do meet their
obligations and are actually trying to beef up their militaries.
  • 6:27 - 6:31
    Maybe countries like Poland
and Hungary can come along for the ride .
  • 6:31 - 6:36
    But this whole postwar liberal-democratic
order we’ve had for the last 80 years? Yeah,
  • 6:36 - 6:39
Trump and Putin are prooobably gonna smash it.
  • 6:39 - 6:43
If it makes you feel any better,
that order was created by America
  • 6:43 - 6:45
and Russia carving up Europe in
    the ‘40s
  • 6:45 - 6:47
    . The circle of life.
  • 6:47 - 6:50
But honestly, this has been a long time
    coming.
  • 6:50 - 6:52
And it all started way before Trump.
  • 6:52 - 6:54
    Remember Obama’s “pivot to Asia?”
  • 6:54 - 6:57
It was a good plan! Leave the Middle
  • 6:57 - 7:01
East to their own devices while
    America refocuses on the Pacific,
  • 7:01 - 7:04
although that never truly materialized on
account of the US getting distracted with
  • 7:04 - 7:10
the Arab Spring, no-fly zones over Libya,
drone-striking Yemen, and, of course, ISIS.
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    That was frustrating, I’m sure.
  • 7:12 - 7:16
    But hey, when
you look back on it, you just gotta laugh.
  • 7:21 - 7:23
    Now THAT’S some madman energy!
  • 7:23 - 7:26
Let’s also not forget Obama’s whole “Russia Reset.”
  • 7:26 - 7:30
    Before Russiagate convinced
half the country that Vladimir Putin was somehow
  • 7:30 - 7:34
    controlling American elections, the
Obama administration tried getting on friendlier terms with Moscow
  • 7:34 - 7:37
    . We even
gave them this cute little “reset” button!
  • 7:37 - 7:40
    Granted the word printed on
    the “reset” button translated
  • 7:40 - 7:43
to something along the lines of “overload.”
  • 7:43 - 7:46
    Which, in retrospect, showed some
pretty good foresight on their part.
  • 7:46 - 7:49
What I’m getting at is, no, Trump isn’t crazy.
  • 7:49 - 7:52

trickster who loves getting under people’s skin?
  • 7:52 - 7:54
    Sure, but crazy, no.
  • 7:54 - 7:59
    And neither are these broader
strategic moves when you really look at them.
  • 7:59 - 8:02
Moving the US away from Europe and toward
    the Pacific,
  • 8:02 - 8:04
    repairing relations with Russia,
  • 8:04 - 8:07
and making a leaner but altogether meaner
    military -
  • 8:07 - 8:12
these things were and largely still are bipartisan.
  • 8:12 - 8:15
    But since it’s coming
from the mouth of Trump this time?
  • 8:15 - 8:19
Well, you know the drill. Cue Cheeto Hitler…
  • 8:19 - 8:23
But what do you think? Leave a comment
below - I do actually read them.
