The Greatest Relief | Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh | #mindfulness

  • 0:06 - 0:09
There are things that do not go well
    in our body,
  • 0:11 - 0:15
and there are things that do not go well
    in our consciousness.
  • 0:18 - 0:19
    We suffer
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    and we are motivated by
    the desire to practice
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    so that we can relieve
    some of our suffering
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    we know that
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    you can get some relief
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    from our suffering
  • 0:42 - 0:44
if we know how to practice.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
So relief is what we seek for.
  • 0:58 - 0:59
    We have some worries,
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    we have have some fear,
  • 1:03 - 1:06
we have some problem with our body,
  • 1:06 - 1:07
    with our mind
  • 1:08 - 1:11
and we can practice according to
    the teaching of the Buddha
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    and get some relief
  • 1:14 - 1:16
and maybe in a few days,
  • 1:17 - 1:19
in a few weeks, we can get some relief,
  • 1:19 - 1:20
    we can restore the balance
  • 1:21 - 1:25
and you are capable of continue our life.
  • 1:26 - 1:30
Although the suffering are still there
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    but not too much
  • 1:35 - 1:38
Not many of us want to seek
    the greatest relief
  • 1:39 - 1:42
so that we can have a total liberation
  • 1:43 - 1:44
    from fear,
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    from craving,
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    from our worries.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
    We are seeking enough relief
so that we can go on.
  • 2:03 - 2:04
We can bear that amount of suffering
  • 2:05 - 2:08
to continue on our path, to survive.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
But the purpose of the Buddhist practice
    is more than that
  • 2:18 - 2:22
    not only to survive
    but to liberate yourself.
  • 2:28 - 2:32
    And the only way
is to go deeper into the nature...
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    of you, of yourself.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
Because we are capable of knowing that
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    this body is not us.
  • 2:45 - 2:48
We don't identify ourself with that body
  • 2:49 - 2:51
that is why the way we carry that body
  • 2:52 - 2:53
    is very light.
  • 2:57 - 3:02
    Because there is the wisdom
    of non-attachment to the body.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
If you can look upon your body
  • 3:09 - 3:10
    not like a self
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    and then you can
    also look upon your feelings
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    not as the self.
  • 3:21 - 3:22
    If you have feelings
  • 3:22 - 3:25
and then you have to carry
    the burden of your feelings,
  • 3:27 - 3:28
    just like your body
  • 3:30 - 3:31
    and as a human being,
  • 3:32 - 3:35
    you cannot avoid having feelings
  • 3:37 - 3:41
    because you have perception,
    you've got feelings.
  • 3:46 - 3:50
And sometime we are not capable of...
  • 3:51 - 3:54
    of holding your feeling,
  • 3:55 - 3:59
    your feeling is so painful
  • 4:00 - 4:03
that you attempted to destroy your body
  • 4:03 - 4:06
in order for that feeling to disappear
  • 4:09 - 4:13
But there are those of us
    who can handle our feelings.
  • 4:15 - 4:18
We are not caught by our feelings.
  • 4:22 - 4:25
    We do not identify ourself
    with that feeling,
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    and therefore,
  • 4:30 - 4:32
we are free from our feelings,
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    and we know
how to take care of our feelings
  • 4:37 - 4:40
so that we don't have to suffer much.
  • 4:46 - 4:48
We know how to get rid of our fear,
  • 4:49 - 4:52
    our anger, our tension,
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    that is why our feelings
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    are no longer heavy
  • 5:00 - 5:02
like the way they used to be.
  • 5:06 - 5:08
    It's like an onion.
  • 5:09 - 5:14
When you remove a layer of the onion
    we see nothing in it.
  • 5:15 - 5:20
but when the Bodhisattva is looking deeply
into the nature of form and feeling
  • 5:20 - 5:24
    they find that there is
    no substantial nature,
  • 5:24 - 5:29
there's no self-nature within the body,
    and the feeling
  • 5:31 - 5:33
    and that is why
  • 5:33 - 5:35
    they are free.
