Food revolutionaries

  • Not Synced
My wish if for you to help
    a strong, sustainable movement
  • Not Synced
    to educate every child
  • Not Synced
    about food.
  • Not Synced
To inspire families to cook again,
  • Not Synced
    and to empower people everywhere
  • Not Synced
    to fight obsesity.
  • Not Synced
I came here to start a food revolution
  • Not Synced
    that I profoundly believe in.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    [Great Big Story
    in partnership with TED]
  • Not Synced
Narrator: They had a big idea
    to change the world ...
  • Not Synced
    but they couldn't do alone.
  • Not Synced
    (Voices) So my wish,
  • Not Synced
    my wish,
  • Not Synced
    I wish,
  • Not Synced
and now here's my wish ...
  • Not Synced
    [Torchbearers.]
  • Not Synced
    (Knife chopping)
  • Not Synced
    JA: Food is simple.
  • Not Synced
    It's just raw ingredients.
  • Not Synced
But it's the most powerful killer
    on the planet.
  • Not Synced
Every child has the human right
    to be taught about food:
  • Not Synced
    where it comes from,
  • Not Synced
    how it affects their body.
  • Not Synced
And they should be shown at school,
  • Not Synced
    because it's at the frontline
    of the fight against obesity.
  • Not Synced
    [London, England.]
  • Not Synced
    [Charlton Manor Primary School.]
  • Not Synced
    What happens at Charlton Manor
  • Not Synced
    is that incredible headteacher
took it to the next level.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
    [Timothy Baker. Headteacher]
  • Not Synced
    TB: In the past,
  • Not Synced
    the children weren't
    eating the right things.
  • Not Synced
    I've been inspired by Jamie
    to educate this school
  • Not Synced
about the fact that we're feeding
    the children the wrong food.
  • Not Synced
    And I though well,
  • Not Synced
    the timetable is an already
    crowded place --
  • Not Synced
    there are so many lessons
    in the primary curriculum.
  • Not Synced
How can you introduce another subject
    for teachers to teach?
  • Not Synced
    So we looked at English,
  • Not Synced
    we looked at Maths, Science,
    History, Geography,
  • Not Synced
and we saw how we could
    put that around food.
  • Not Synced
    (Children laughing)
  • Not Synced
    Elizabeth: When you incorporate cooking,
  • Not Synced
it's something everyone looks forward to.
  • Not Synced
    Teacher: Today we're doing
a little bit of science in the kitchen.
  • Not Synced
Teacher: We are going to combine
    our lessons on Diwali,
  • Not Synced
    but also our lessons
    on shape and symmetry.
  • Not Synced
Teacher: Would you say this is
a physical change or a chemical change
  • Not Synced
    that I'm making?
  • Not Synced
    Physical change,
  • Not Synced
    you're right.
  • Not Synced
    TB: For history topics,
  • Not Synced
we talk about the history of chocolate,
  • Not Synced
    and so we can do
    a whole topic around that.
  • Not Synced
    Teacher: And the Aztecs had
    been cooking with chocolate --
  • Not Synced
    TB: And it's interesting because
it's not made as they think,
  • Not Synced
    with all the milk in
that they would have had --
  • Not Synced
and the taste is very, very different.
  • Not Synced
    Some children like it;
  • Not Synced
    some children don't.
  • Not Synced
    (Child laughs)
  • Not Synced
    For Maths,
  • Not Synced
    simple weighing and measuring.
  • Not Synced
    Math Teacher: We are going
to be doing a lot of measuring,
  • Not Synced
    because we have to
    measure out some liquids,
  • Not Synced
    which we did last term,
  • Not Synced
    we did some measuring.
  • Not Synced
JO: What he's done is he's put
food at the heart of the school,
  • Not Synced
and he's fed the stomach and the mind.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
    (Children yelling excited)
  • Not Synced
TB:Charlton Manor is a state school.
  • Not Synced
80 percent of children come from areas
that are identified as in poverty.
  • Not Synced
The children had very little experience
of being outside in the countryside,
  • Not Synced
    milling about,
  • Not Synced
    food-growing.
  • Not Synced
    Over a period of time,
  • Not Synced
we were able to build a garden.
  • Not Synced
    (Children yelling)
  • Not Synced
Students: Welcome to the Secret Garden!
  • Not Synced
    Student: This is our greenhouse.
  • Not Synced
    This is our compost bin.
  • Not Synced
    This is our [armory.]
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
    This is our vegetable patch.
  • Not Synced
    These are our chickens.
  • Not Synced
    Sean: The chickens come out
  • Not Synced
and they try and chase ya.
  • Not Synced
I had to run for my life.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
    [Community Garden. London]
  • Not Synced
TB: Up at the community garden,
  • Not Synced
    we've got two [party] tunnels
    so we can grow year-round.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
    Sean: I will pick onions,
  • Not Synced
    broccoli
  • Not Synced
    and carrots
  • Not Synced
    because they're all healthy,
  • Not Synced
    they make you stronger --
  • Not Synced
    obviously --
  • Not Synced
and they just make me happy.
  • Not Synced
    So, yeah.
  • Not Synced
    (Birds chirp)
  • Not Synced
TB: 12 or 13 years ago,
  • Not Synced
there was a reluctance to engage
    in this sort of curriculum.
  • Not Synced
There were many people that couldn't see
    what we were aiming for
  • Not Synced
and what we were trying to do.
  • Not Synced
    Obesity hadn't reached the epidemic
    proportions it has reached now.
  • Not Synced
    We're getting children that look
    and appear more healthy.
  • Not Synced
    Concentration is so much higher,
  • Not Synced
    behavior issues are incredibly lower
than they have been in the past.
  • Not Synced
Student: One the of the great
    things they've done
  • Not Synced
is introduce us to worlds of healthy food.
  • Not Synced
    Student: Before I was
    a really picky eater.
  • Not Synced
    Sean: I feel better
    when I eat healthier food.
  • Not Synced
    TB: [When you ... .... eye-level,
  • Not Synced
    that's not going to shorten
    your life by 10 years.
  • Not Synced
JO: You don't die young because
you didn't do your geography homework.
  • Not Synced
These kids die young if they don't
    know how to feed themselves.
  • Not Synced
I think Tim and the team would inspire
    headteachers across the world --
  • Not Synced
    and parents.
  • Not Synced
Any teacher has the same capacity
to be as brilliant as he is.
  • Not Synced
His story, we want to replicate,
  • Not Synced
but the truth is we've got
    so much more to do.
  • Not Synced
    TB: Jamie really revolutionized
    our school dinners,
  • Not Synced
and it really has hugely impacted
    all the children,
  • Not Synced
but so many in a deep way
  • Not Synced
that's going to stick with them
for the rest of their lives.
  • Not Synced
When you change a life like that,
  • Not Synced
    it makes it all worthwhile.
  • Not Synced
From all of us out at Charlton Manor,
  • Not Synced
    thank you, Jamie.
  • Not Synced
    Student: Thank you, Jamie.
  • Not Synced
    Student: Thank you, Jamie.
