The Moons of Mars Explained -- Phobos & Deimos
-
0:00 - 0:03The moons of Mars explained.
-
0:03 - 0:07Mars has two moons, Phobos and Deimos.
-
0:07 - 0:10They are really tiny. How tiny?
-
0:11 - 0:13Compared to Mars or our own Moon,
-
0:14 - 0:14pretty tiny.
-
0:15 - 0:18Although ‘tiny’ is a matter of opinion.
-
0:19 - 0:22Their surface area is up close to some
of the smallest states on Earth, -
0:22 - 0:24like Luxembourg and Malta.
-
0:25 - 0:28Although Phobos and Deimos are
in no way lightweight, -
0:28 - 0:31in reality, their gravitational pull
isn’t even strong enough -
0:31 - 0:33to bring them into spherical form.
-
0:33 - 0:36So they look more like huge
potatoes than moons. -
0:37 - 0:39The most popular theory of their origin
-
0:39 - 0:42is that they were once
part of the asteroid belt, -
0:42 - 0:45until Jupiter’s massive gravity
kicked them out of it, -
0:45 - 0:47so Mars could catch them.
-
0:50 - 0:56Phobos orbits Mars at a average distance
of 9,400 kilometres, once every 7½ hours. -
0:57 - 1:01It’s on a collision course, and gets
2 metres closer to Mars every year. -
1:01 - 1:07In 50 to 100 million years, it will either
be ripped to pieces by Mars’s gravity -
1:07 - 1:10and be transformed into a beautiful ring,
-
1:10 - 1:12or it will crash into Mars.
-
1:13 - 1:17The energy released in this collision
would kill everything on the small planet. -
1:17 - 1:22So, if there are humans on Mars by then,
they should build very strong bunkers. -
1:23 - 1:26Smaller Deimos, on the other
hand, is slowly escaping Mars. -
1:27 - 1:32Eventually, it will fly off into space
and leave a lonely red planet behind. -
1:32 - 1:37So, in a few hundred million years,
Mars will be moonless and on its own. -
1:38 - 1:42Unless it manages to catch
itself another asteroid.
