Music as a Language - Victor Wooten
-
0:20 - 0:22Music is a language.
-
0:23 - 0:27Both music and verbal languages serve the same purpose.
-
0:27 - 0:30They are both forms of expression.
-
0:30 - 0:34They can be used as a way to communicate with others.
-
0:34 - 0:37They can be read or written.
-
0:37 - 0:39They can make you laugh or cry,
-
0:39 - 0:40think or question,
-
0:40 - 0:43and can speak to one or many.
-
0:43 - 0:48And both can definitely make you move.
-
0:50 - 0:54In some instances music works better than the spoken word,
-
0:54 - 0:55because it doesn't have to be understood
-
0:55 - 0:58to be effective.
-
0:59 - 1:02Although many musicians agree that music is a language,
-
1:02 - 1:06it is rarely treated as such.
-
1:06 - 1:07Many of us treat it as something
-
1:07 - 1:09that can only be learned by following
-
1:09 - 1:11a strict regimen, under the tutelage
-
1:11 - 1:13of a skilled teacher.
-
1:13 - 1:16This approach has been followed for hundreds of years
-
1:16 - 1:21with proven success, but it takes a long time.
-
1:21 - 1:23Too long.
-
1:31 - 1:34Think about the first language you learn as a child.
-
1:34 - 1:39More importantly, think about how you learned it.
-
1:39 - 1:41You were a baby when you first started speaking,
-
1:41 - 1:44and even though you spoke the language incorrectly
-
1:44 - 1:45you were allowed to make mistakes.
-
1:45 - 1:48And the more mistakes you made
-
1:48 - 1:51the more your parents smiled.
-
1:55 - 1:58Learning to speak was not something you were sent somewhere to do
-
1:58 - 2:00only a few times a week.
-
2:00 - 2:02And the majority of the people you spoke to
-
2:02 - 2:03were not beginners.
-
2:03 - 2:07They were already proficient speakers.
-
2:07 - 2:11Imagine your parents forcing you to only speak to other babies
-
2:11 - 2:15until you were good enough to speak to them.
-
2:15 - 2:17You would probably be an adult before
-
2:17 - 2:21you could carry on a proper conversation.
-
2:22 - 2:26To use a musical term, as a baby you were allowed
-
2:26 - 2:29to jam with professionals.
-
2:36 - 2:39If we approach music in the same natural way
-
2:39 - 2:41we aproached our first language
-
2:41 - 2:43we will learn to speak it in the same short time
-
2:43 - 2:46it took to speak our first language.
-
2:46 - 2:48Proof of this could be seen in almost any family
-
2:48 - 2:54where a child grows up with other musicians in the family.
-
3:26 - 3:30Here are a few keys to follow in learning or teaching music:
-
3:30 - 3:36in the beginning embrace mistakes, instead of correcting them.
-
3:36 - 3:42Like a child playing air guitar, there are no wrong notes.
-
3:42 - 3:44Allow young musicians to play
-
3:44 - 3:46and perform with accomplished musicians
-
3:46 - 3:49on a daily basis.
-
3:49 - 3:53Encourage young musicians to play more than they practice.
-
3:53 - 3:56The more they play the more they will practice on their own.
-
3:56 - 4:01Music comes from the musician, not the instrument.
-
4:02 - 4:04And most importantly, remember that
-
4:04 - 4:07a language works best when we have
-
4:07 - 4:10something interesting to say.
-
4:10 - 4:11Many music teachers never find out
-
4:11 - 4:13what the students have to say.
-
4:13 - 4:18We only tell them what they are supposed to say.
-
4:21 - 4:24A child speaks a language for years,
-
4:24 - 4:26before they even learn the alphabet.
-
4:26 - 4:28Too many rules at the onset,
-
4:28 - 4:31will actually slow them down.
-
4:31 - 4:34In my eyes, the approach to music
-
4:34 - 4:36should be the same.
-
4:36 - 4:40After all, music is a language too.

Music is a powerful communication tool--it causes us to laugh, cry, think and question. Bassist and five-time Grammy winner, Victor Wooten, asks us to approach music the same way we learn verbal language--by embracing mistakes and playing as often as possible.
