0:00 - 0:04- [Voiceover] Triangle ABC
undergoes a translation, -
0:04 - 0:09and we're using the
notation capital T for it, -
0:09 - 0:12and then we see what the
translation has to be. -
0:12 - 0:14We're gonna move,
-
0:14 - 0:15it's kind of small, I hope you can see it
-
0:15 - 0:16on your video screen.
-
0:16 - 0:17We're gonna move positive eight.
-
0:17 - 0:19Every point here is
gonna move positive eight -
0:19 - 0:20in the x direction.
-
0:20 - 0:22Its x coordinate is going
to increase by eight, -
0:22 - 0:24or the corresponding point in the image,
-
0:24 - 0:27its x coordinate, is going
to increase by eight, -
0:27 - 0:28and the corresponding point
-
0:28 - 0:29in the image's y coordinate
-
0:29 - 0:33is going to decrease by
one, so let's do that. -
0:33 - 0:34And I'll focus on the vertices,
-
0:34 - 0:37whoops, let me drag that to the trash,
-
0:37 - 0:38I didn't mean to do that.
-
0:38 - 0:42I'm going to focus on the vertices
-
0:42 - 0:44well, that's just the
easiest thing for my brain -
0:44 - 0:45to worth with.
-
0:45 - 0:47And actually, this is what
the tool expects as well. -
0:47 - 0:50So the point B, is going to move eight
-
0:50 - 0:51to the right, or its corresponding point
-
0:51 - 0:53in the image is going
to have an x coordinate -
0:53 - 0:54eight larger.
-
0:54 - 0:55So right now, the x
coordinate is negative four, -
0:55 - 0:56if you added eight to that,
-
0:56 - 0:58it would be positive four,
-
0:58 - 0:59and its y coordinate is going
-
0:59 - 1:00to be one lower.
-
1:00 - 1:03Right now, point B's
y coordinate is eight, -
1:03 - 1:05one lower than that is seven.
-
1:05 - 1:06So, in the image, the corresponding
-
1:06 - 1:08point of the image would
going to be right over there. -
1:08 - 1:10And you see we moved eight to the right,
-
1:10 - 1:12and one down.
-
1:12 - 1:13Let's do that with point C.
-
1:13 - 1:15It's at x equals negative seven,
-
1:15 - 1:16if you move eight to the right,
-
1:16 - 1:18if you increase your
x coordinate by eight, -
1:18 - 1:20you're gonna move to x equals one,
-
1:20 - 1:22and then if you change your y coordinate
-
1:22 - 1:24by negative one, you're
gonna move down one, -
1:24 - 1:25then you're gonna get to that point
-
1:25 - 1:27right over there.
-
1:27 - 1:30Now, let's do it with point A.
-
1:30 - 1:32So point A's x coordinate is negative one.
-
1:32 - 1:34If you add eight to it,
-
1:34 - 1:36it's going to be positive seven,
-
1:36 - 1:38and its current y coordinate is two.
-
1:38 - 1:39If you take one away from it,
-
1:39 - 1:41you're gonna get to a y coordinate of one.
-
1:41 - 1:44And so there you have it.
-
1:44 - 1:46Let's see, how do I connect these two?
-
1:46 - 1:47Oh, there you go,
-
1:47 - 1:49and we can check our answer.
-
1:49 - 1:50And we got it right.
-
1:50 - 1:53We have performed the translation.

And that space contains lots of things. And these things have shapes. In geometry we are concerned with the nature of these shapes, how we define them, and what they teach us about the world at large--from math to architecture to biology to astronomy (and everything in between). Learning geometry is about more than just taking your medicine ("It's good for you!"), it's at the core of everything that exists--including you. Having said all that, some of the specific topics we'll cover include angles, intersecting lines, right triangles, perimeter, area, volume, circles, triangles, quadrilaterals, analytic geometry, and geometric constructions. Wow. That's a lot. To summarize: it's difficult to imagine any area of math that is more widely used than geometry.
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.
