Job openings, a recyclable asset? | Saskia van Liempt | TEDxMadrid
-
0:10 - 0:14Hello, I'd like to take
a look back to a moment, last autumn, -
0:14 - 0:18when we woke up to
that kind of news in the press. -
0:18 - 0:21At the time, I was searching
the web looking for a job -
0:21 - 0:23because I was unemployed.
-
0:23 - 0:25And I found this kind of opportunities.
-
0:25 - 0:27They didn't match my profile,
-
0:27 - 0:31but they seemed very interesting,
and I felt bad letting them go. -
0:31 - 0:35Together with my friend Malena,
who was in the same situation, -
0:35 - 0:39we began compiling those offers
and putting them on a website. -
0:39 - 0:42so that they could be accessible
to anyone interested. -
0:42 - 0:44That's how our project launched
-
0:44 - 0:47and we started publishing
offers like this one. -
0:47 - 0:52For example, Facebook in Ireland:
they wanted someone who spoke Spanish. -
0:52 - 0:57In Dubai: a chef, speaking
Spanish, in a 5-star hotel, -
0:57 - 1:01or a video game tester,
in Spanish, in Frankfurt. -
1:02 - 1:04There is a dream in each of them,
-
1:04 - 1:10we want to recycle job offers
sharing the information, -
1:10 - 1:13that despite being public
doesn't reach everyone, -
1:13 - 1:16and isn't always easy to find.
-
1:16 - 1:20Some people think that we're boosting
the famous brain drain. -
1:20 - 1:23We prefer to call it
a "talent circulation." -
1:23 - 1:25Why demonize the fact
-
1:25 - 1:28that one might leave the country
to find a job opportunity? -
1:28 - 1:30We all support the Erasmus programme.
-
1:30 - 1:34Then why don't we want our youth to go out
and get an international experience? -
1:34 - 1:38Ana Lee Saxenian explains
in her book, "The New Argonauts," -
1:38 - 1:41how many young professionals
who went to Silicon Valley -
1:41 - 1:46come back to their country of origin,
bringing all their experience with them -
1:46 - 1:50but also establishing solid bridges
between their different regions, -
1:50 - 1:52and this is very interesting.
-
1:52 - 1:53But let's go back to Spain.
-
1:53 - 1:57A year later, the press
is still publishing the same thing. -
1:57 - 2:01Employment has not improved,
on the contrary. -
2:01 - 2:03However, all through this year,
-
2:03 - 2:08we've proudly shared
more than 800 job openings, -
2:08 - 2:12many people visited our site,
and we've helped them. -
2:12 - 2:15But we want our network
to keep growing -
2:15 - 2:18because we think
that employment is a recyclable asset, -
2:18 - 2:21and what is no use to me
may be gold for you. -
2:21 - 2:25The job offer that doesn't suit me
may be perfect for you, or you. -
2:25 - 2:29If two people have been able to do this,
-
2:29 - 2:32what could we achieve
with more collaboration? -
2:32 - 2:35The tool is available, it's there,
-
2:35 - 2:38who wants to share this challenge with us?
-
2:38 - 2:39Thank you.
-
2:39 - 2:40(Applause)

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED conferences.
Saskia, a business woman and a member of the public, has created a database of interesting job openings for Spanish professionals who want to work abroad, simply listing and gathering ads that didn't fit her needs. Now her web page www.trabajosporelmundo.com has hundreds of thousands of visitors. What would happen if everyone consolidated interesting job openings and redistributed them to those who need them? - Video Language:
