2016 Sewing Wins and Fails

  • 0:00 - 0:06
Today I’m going to share with you the coolest
things that I sewed in 2016 and some… not
  • 0:06 - 0:07
    so cool things.
  • 0:14 - 0:18
So this year I decided that I wanted to get
really serious with sewing, and learn lots
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    of new skills and techniques.
  • 0:20 - 0:25
I wanted to learn how to sew more difficult
things like lingerie and pants and to master
  • 0:25 - 0:29
stretchy fabrics, and because of that I’ve
ended up making some REALLY cool stuff things
  • 0:29 - 0:33
year that I am really proud of, that I haven’t
yet shown you guys on my channel.
  • 0:33 - 0:38
But of course, trying out new techniques,
I've also made a lot of mistakes, and I'll
  • 0:38 - 0:39
show those to you as well.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
But, let's start with the wins first!
  • 0:41 - 0:47
So because I wanted to master using stretchy
and knit fabrics, I've made some really cute
  • 0:47 - 0:51
t-shirts this year, basically because I made
a pattern that I really liked and then I discovered
  • 0:51 - 0:54
that I could whip up a t-shirt in just a couple
    of hours.
  • 0:54 - 1:00
Like this floral one, and this robot one,
and this kinda... emo one - "you're planet
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    sucks, man".
  • 1:01 - 1:06
And this pink one with candy hearts all over
it - you've probably seen me wearing this
  • 1:06 - 1:11
a couple of times in my videos but I never
actually said how I made it - basically I
  • 1:11 - 1:16
made the t-shirt in the exact same way as
in my alien ringer T-shirt, and THEN I used
  • 1:16 - 1:19
my t-shirt transfer tutorial to do the hearts!
  • 1:19 - 1:25
Something I made just 2 days ago was this
    really cute pink bodysuit.
  • 1:25 - 1:30
The bodysuit is based on a pattern that I
made myself, using a singlet top and a pair
  • 1:30 - 1:31
    of boyshort underwear.
  • 1:31 - 1:34
I've been practising for a future tutorial
    for you guys.
  • 1:34 - 1:40
But I love how it turned out and it was also
my first time using fold-over elastic around
  • 1:40 - 1:45
the neckline and it turned out so well and
I'm going to be using fold-over elastic all
  • 1:45 - 1:46
the time in the future now.
  • 1:46 - 1:52
So the bodysuit looks really good when I'm
wearing it ON my body, but when it’s just
  • 1:52 - 1:59
    hanging there… – uhhm I accidentally made
the legholes on the fabric a little bit too
  • 1:59 - 2:03
small, so I wasn't able to then stretch the
elastic as I was sewing around the leg holes
  • 2:03 - 2:09
which made them look all like - weirdly ruffled
    - that look perfectly fine and lay flat when
  • 2:09 - 2:13
they're actually stretched over my legs, but
if you saw something like this hanging up
  • 2:13 - 2:16
like on a rack in a shop you'd probably think
    twice about buying it.
  • 2:16 - 2:24
And while I thought that the boyshorts would
add this cute 40s, retro detail, in the end
  • 2:24 - 2:28
they actually actually kinda made it look
    like this weird... wrestler’s outfit.
  • 2:28 - 2:33
It still looks really cute and is totally
wearable as long as I am wearing it underneath
  • 2:33 - 2:35
something like shorts or a skirt or pants.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
So, I still count this as a sewing win.
  • 2:38 - 2:43
So my number one favourite thing that I have
made this year is this halter-neck holographic
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    swimsuit.
  • 2:44 - 2:49
I had a bit of leftover fabric from when I
did my holographic sleeves tutorial, and because
  • 2:49 - 2:56
the material is a waterproof stretchy lycra
I thought, "hmm this could be made into a
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    really cool swimsuit!"
  • 2:57 - 3:02
It is the COOLEST thing, like I light up like
a rainbow when I go into the sun!
  • 3:02 - 3:08
For this I actually used a free pattern which
I'll link in the description, it's by Madalynne.
  • 3:08 - 3:13
The pattern doesn't cover a large range of
sizes but you probably could hack the pattern
  • 3:13 - 3:16
to upsize it if you needed to.
  • 3:16 - 3:22
But, it's free and taught me how to make this
cute halter neck top, and it also came with
  • 3:22 - 3:25
    high-waisted bottoms as well.
  • 3:25 - 3:29
The pattern was a little bit difficult to
understand because I wasn't sure how to attach
  • 3:29 - 3:34
the swimsuit fabric to the lining so what
I ended up doing was just basting the pieces
  • 3:34 - 3:38
together and then sewing it like in the instructions.
  • 3:38 - 3:40
Oh, and recognise the ring on the back?
  • 3:40 - 3:46
It's that weird ring that I took out of the
dress on episode number 1 of the Style Pile!
  • 3:46 - 3:50
Something I've really wanted to learn this
year was how to make pants and leggings, so
  • 3:50 - 3:56
I started first with leggings because they
seemed easier, and this was the first pair
  • 3:56 - 3:57
    of leggings that I made.
  • 3:57 - 4:03
And then I hacked the pattern to add bellbottoms,
much in the same way as I did with my bell-sleeve
  • 4:03 - 4:09
top except I added the bells to the bottom
of the legs instead of the sleeves, and they
  • 4:09 - 4:12
turned out SO cool and I love them so much.
  • 4:12 - 4:16
I definitely have to be feeling very confident
to wear them because they're a pretty out-there
  • 4:16 - 4:21
thing to wear, but when I am they're just
    the coolest, most eye-catching thing.
  • 4:21 - 4:24
And then I made an actual pair of pants!
  • 4:24 - 4:26
Like, how frickken professional do these look!
  • 4:26 - 4:28
    Look at the pockets!
  • 4:28 - 4:37
So these pants were actually made with a commercial
pattern from Colette and they're the "Moji"
  • 4:37 - 4:38
    pants.
  • 4:38 - 4:43
And can I just say that Colette patterns are
amazing, they actually make SENSE which was
  • 4:43 - 4:48
a revelation to me as I've only used really
confusing patterns in the past where you just
  • 4:48 - 4:53
had to kind of figure everything out for yourself
    - *Burdastyle* - they have a couple of free
  • 4:53 - 4:55
patterns as well that you can check out, so
    - yeah!
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    Go Colette!
  • 4:57 - 5:00
    Hashtag-not-spon - I just really like Colette.
  • 5:00 - 5:04
I've also made some really cute things this
year which aren't clothes, the first was this
  • 5:04 - 5:10
necklace and brooch set that I actually made
    on a Patreon live-stream.
  • 5:10 - 5:14
I love this so much because I wear them together
with the brooch here and the necklace here
  • 5:14 - 5:20
and then I can pretend to pour people a cup
of tea and I'm a massive dork, so that's like
  • 5:20 - 5:22
    the best thing ever.
  • 5:22 - 5:28
Okay so not everything that I have made this
    year has exactly worked out.
  • 5:28 - 5:33
The next things that I'll show you I consider
to be "semi-wins" meaning that they were still
  • 5:33 - 5:37
wearble in particular contexts - you'll see
    what I mean.
  • 5:37 - 5:42
Okay so this is the first one-piece swimsuit
that I tried to make - and when I made it
  • 5:42 - 5:46
I was really proud of it and I thought it
looked awesome and so I immediately took it
  • 5:46 - 5:52
to the swimming pool to test out - and I jumped
in the water and I discovered that the material
  • 5:52 - 5:53
    goes totally see-through when wet.
  • 5:53 - 5:57
And had I lined the swimsuit - no, absolutely
    not!
  • 5:57 - 6:01
So there I was, stuck in the pool with a totally
see-through swimsuit on, kinda just hiding
  • 6:01 - 6:06
down in the water so nobody would see me and
I was miles away from my towel.
  • 6:06 - 6:11
Luckily Luciano had also come to the pool
with me and was able to grab my towel for
  • 6:11 - 6:14
me so that I didn't flash the entire populace
    of the pool.
  • 6:14 - 6:19
However, just like the pink bodysuit I'm still
able to wear it like as a singlet top when
  • 6:19 - 6:25
I wear it under pants or shorts, with a bra
underneath just in case it rains.
  • 6:25 - 6:27
    So that's why it's still a "semi-win".
  • 6:27 - 6:35
It's just not functional as an actual swimsuit,
which is kinda what it's supposed to be.
  • 6:35 - 6:39
And finally, the part that you've all been
waiting for - some of the stuff that I've
  • 6:39 - 6:41
made this year has just flat-out failed.
  • 6:41 - 6:48
I'm actually a bit sad because I have cut
up or recycled or donated most of the failed
  • 6:48 - 6:53
things that I've made this year without recording
    any evidence of their existence.
  • 6:53 - 6:58
Like I have on my list here to talk about:
    accidentally pornographic swimsuit top and
  • 6:58 - 7:03
the boob-squish crop top from hell - but I
couldn't actually find these pieces anywhere
  • 7:03 - 7:07
and I think I must have gotten rid of any
    evidence of their existence.
  • 7:07 - 7:12
But I CAN show you the couple of fails that
    I did hold on to.
  • 7:12 - 7:17
So remember a couple of videos ago I showed
you all how to turn dresses into rompers?
  • 7:17 - 7:22
Well, this one was actually the first attempt
    I made at that.
  • 7:22 - 7:28
I accidentally made the crotch way too high
up and - I'll let the video here speak for
  • 7:28 - 7:30
    itself.
  • 7:32 - 7:32
    Yeah.
  • 7:32 - 7:33
    I know.
  • 7:33 - 7:39
I think I'm going to try and salvage the top
part of it though by just cutting the skirt/shorts
  • 7:39 - 7:42
part off and then just having it as a cute
    crop top.
  • 7:42 - 7:47
So when I first decided that I would try and
be less scared of using commercial patterns
  • 7:47 - 7:49
    I made this.
  • 7:49 - 7:53
    It's sooooo unflattering!
  • 7:53 - 7:54
    Just so unflattering.
  • 7:54 - 8:00
It was made from a commercial pattern - a
    Simplicity Quicksew pattern - but I don't
  • 8:00 - 8:05
know what I did wrong or IF I did anything
wrong, or if the pattern's just really, really
  • 8:05 - 8:06
    ugly.
  • 8:06 - 8:11
I kept it because I want to salvage the fabric
and make like, you know, a pillow or something
  • 8:11 - 8:13
out of it, 'coz it's really pretty fabric.
  • 8:13 - 8:14
    Oh yeah, okay.
  • 8:14 - 8:15
    This makes me sad.
  • 8:15 - 8:20
So when I made my tutorial with Print All
Over Me, on making patterned clothing, a really
  • 8:20 - 8:26
cool artist contacted me and said they made
a store and I checked it out, and they had
  • 8:26 - 8:31
the COOLEST designs and I asked if they could
make some of their designs into fabric for
  • 8:31 - 8:36
me so that I could make clothes out of it,
and they did, which was awesome, and then
  • 8:36 - 8:38
I just totally butchered the whole thing *laughs*.
  • 8:38 - 8:42
I tried to make this high-necked sleeveless
shift dress type-of-thing, but it just really
  • 8:42 - 8:47
didn't work out and it's really really unflattering
and it doesn't fit properly and kinda looks
  • 8:47 - 8:51
like - a bit like a nightie, but it isn't
even good enough to be a nightie, but obviously
  • 8:51 - 8:55
I've kept the fabric because it's amazing
and after making that pink bodysuit a couple
  • 8:55 - 9:00
of days ago I've decided that I'm going to
turn this into a bodysuit - and I think that
  • 9:00 - 9:03
will actually suit the fabric really perfectly.
  • 9:03 - 9:07
And hopefully I can show you guys how it turns
out on my social media channels in the next
  • 9:07 - 9:08
    couple of weeks or so!
  • 9:08 - 9:14
So I'm embarrassed that I still make pieces
that look this bad, but um - this is something
  • 9:14 - 9:16
that I also made this year.
  • 9:16 - 9:25
It's meant to be um, a crop top with actually
like a criss-crossed neckline, like this or
  • 9:25 - 9:30
something, and I actually made it on a sewing
machine which isn't really suited for stretchy
  • 9:30 - 9:34
fabrics, um so that's my excuse for why this
    exists.
  • 9:34 - 9:39
God damn it, it actually doesn't look as bad
on camera as it does in real life - but trust
  • 9:39 - 9:41
me, it looks really atrocious in real life.
  • 9:41 - 9:46
But I would like to still try and make something
    like this properly sometime soon.
  • 9:46 - 9:51
Okay, this is the last and most embarrassing
    fail that I have had.
  • 9:51 - 9:57
Soooo um this was actually meant to be a Make
Thrift Buy episode, and I was trying to recreate
  • 9:57 - 10:01
these pencil case earrings - I think they're
from Shop Inu Inu - and this was my version.
  • 10:01 - 10:05
I was too embarrassed to even make a Make
Thrift Buy episode out of these because they
  • 10:05 - 10:07
    were just SO, so bad.
  • 10:07 - 10:16
I made the items inside the pencil case out
of polymer clay, which snapped immediately
  • 10:16 - 10:17
    as you can see here.
  • 10:17 - 10:22
I then painted them with acrylic paint which
came off when it came into contact with the
  • 10:22 - 10:28
glue, and the glue is what I used to seal
the edges of the pencil case together, because
  • 10:28 - 10:32
I used PVC and I was a bit worried about using
heat to seal the edges, because I actually
  • 10:32 - 10:35
think that's kind of toxic, so I used glue
    instead.
  • 10:35 - 10:38
And the whole thing is just such a trainwreck.
  • 10:38 - 10:41
I'm very embarrassed that I made these.
  • 10:41 - 10:44
But hey, you can't have wins all the time!
  • 10:44 - 10:49
So I hope this video can provide you all with
some encouragement if you have ever had a
  • 10:49 - 10:52
sewing fail or even if you frequently have
    sewing fails!
  • 10:52 - 10:58
I've been sewing since the beginning of 2012,
so, almost 5 years, and I still completely
  • 10:58 - 11:01
screw up things which should be pretty basic.
  • 11:01 - 11:05
But if you don't try, you also won't end up
    making anything cool, either.
  • 11:05 - 11:11
So don't be afraid of making mistakes - or
slicing your thumb with a rotary cutter which
  • 11:11 - 11:15
is why my thumb is bandaged up here if you
were wondering - thanks for watching, check
  • 11:15 - 11:19
out my beginner's sewing resource on my new
website if you haven't already and I'll see
  • 11:19 - 11:21
you all in my next video.
  • 11:21 - 11:22
    Bye!
  • 11:22 - 11:26
Thank you to all of my supporters on Patreon
