February 1 - Flowing to Unwatered Lands

  • 0:09 - 0:12
    The Seventh-day Adventist Church
    is known around the world
  • 0:12 - 0:13
    for its mission outreach.
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    And your mission offerings
are the workhorse of these efforts.
  • 0:17 - 0:21
These offerings do the heavy lifting
    and foundation laying,
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    the repair and renovation
    of the basic structure
  • 0:23 - 0:26
of the Church's work around the world.
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    Without the mission offerings,
  • 0:27 - 0:31
    all the other structures
and systems built upon it could crumble.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    Your mission offerings
    are like a life-giving river
  • 0:34 - 0:37
with tributaries flowing around the world,
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    carrying refreshing water
    to mission fields.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    Sometimes we want
to give to a specific project
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    or to put our offerings
    towards something special
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    that stirs our hearts.
  • 0:47 - 0:50
We see the results. We feel satisfied.
  • 0:50 - 0:55
Giving to the mission offering may not be
as glamorous as giving to a specific,
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    well-advertised project or program.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
    But wait! If it weren’t
for mission offering to sustain them,
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    these projects would never happen.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    So what happens
    to our tithes and offerings?
  • 1:07 - 1:11
    Well, when we return 10%
of our income as tithe to God,
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    the Adventist Church uses it
    to support pastors and evangelists,
  • 1:14 - 1:18
as well as some teachers and other workers
    involved in spreading the gospel.
  • 1:19 - 1:24
On the front lines of mission,
tithe is not used to fund orphanages,
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    schools, or health programs,
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    and it doesn’t cover miscellaneous
    operational expenses either.
  • 1:29 - 1:32
    The mission offering does this!
  • 1:32 - 1:36
You see, our mission offerings fund
what can’t be funded through tithe.
  • 1:37 - 1:41
    So when mission giving falls,
then work gets cut back worldwide.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    Mission projects falter.
    The movement stutters.
  • 1:46 - 1:48
None of us want this to happen.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
So our mission offerings help ensure
  • 1:50 - 1:54
    that mission work operates
    continuously around the world.
  • 1:54 - 1:57
Want to see how our giving
    impacts people around the globe?
  • 1:57 - 2:01
    Mission 360º TV programs,
    Mission Spotlight,
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    and the Mission quarterlies
    offer regular updates
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    on mission around the world.
  • 2:05 - 2:08
    These stories take you
    to dozens of countries
  • 2:08 - 2:10
to see what Adventists are doing in places
  • 2:10 - 2:12
you may have never even heard of.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    And what about
    the 13th Sabbath Offering,
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    which began in 1912?
  • 2:16 - 2:19
    For many years, this offering
    was an overflow offering.
  • 2:19 - 2:22
A budget was set to fund
    the mission program,
  • 2:22 - 2:25
and once that money was raised,
    any extra, the overflow,
  • 2:25 - 2:29
    was used to support
a special project chosen for that quarter.
  • 2:29 - 2:34
However, during a recession in the 1970s,
    there was no overflow offering.
  • 2:35 - 2:39
    So church leaders voted
to always send 25% of the offering
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    collected on the 13th Sabbath
    to support specific projects
  • 2:42 - 2:45
for each division on a rotational basis.
  • 2:45 - 2:49
    Through your 13th Sabbath Offerings
    you have helped build schools,
  • 2:49 - 2:53
    dormitories, hospitals,
    clinics, and church buildings,
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    launched mission boats,
    and set up lamb-shelters,
  • 2:57 - 3:00
    printing presses, universities and more--
  • 3:00 - 3:03
altogether, more than a thousand projects.
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    And because tithe money
    can’t be used for buildings,
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    the 13th Sabbath Offering
    has frequently been used
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    for construction projects.
  • 3:10 - 3:14
All of this could have never happened
    without the Holy Spirit’s leading
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    and your regular, faithful support
    of the mission offerings.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
    We encourage you
    to join Adventists everywhere
  • 3:21 - 3:23
to prayerfully consider what you can do
  • 3:23 - 3:26
    to keep a faithful river
    of mission offerings,
  • 3:26 - 3:30
    bringing life-giving water
to mission fields around the world.
