Kal Penn's DNC Speech
-
0:00 - 0:05[Off voice] Please welcome Kal Penn, actor and political activist.
-
0:05 - 0:11[Applause and cheers, also interspersing the whole of Kal Penn's speech]
-
0:11 - 0:15[Kal Penn] Hello! Thank you - thank you guys
-
0:18 - 0:22Nice! See you're like that: thank you very much
-
0:23 - 0:28I am honored to accept your nomination for president of the United States!
-
0:30 - 0:33Wait, this is not my speech.
-
0:35 - 0:38Prompter guy, can we pull up my speech, please?
-
0:38 - 0:41This is awkward
-
0:42 - 0:44So while we’re waiting:
-
0:44 - 0:46I guess I should have a message,
-
0:46 - 0:49a special message for those of you at home who have recently turned 18.
-
0:50 - 0:56Good news. I can now legally register you to vote.
-
1:02 - 1:05Now, I’ve worked on a lot of fun movies,
-
1:05 - 1:10but my favorite job was having a boss who gave the order to take out bin Laden
-
1:10 - 1:14and who’s cool with all of us getting gay-married.
-
1:15 - 1:18So, thank you, invisible man in the chair, for that,
-
1:25 - 1:30and for giving my friends access to affordable health insurance
-
1:30 - 1:33and doubling funding for the Pell grants.
-
1:34 - 1:39Now, I started volunteering for Barack Obama back in 2007.
-
1:39 - 1:43But nothing compares to what I saw behind the scenes at the White House,
-
1:43 - 1:46when I had the honor to serve for two years
-
1:46 - 1:49as President Obama’s liaison to young Americans.
-
1:49 - 1:51I saw how hard he fights for us.
-
1:52 - 1:56And one of the most special days was a Saturday in 2012.
-
1:56 - 1:59The Senate had repealed “don’t ask, don’t tell,”
-
1:59 - 2:04so that anyone can serve the country they love, regardless of whom they love.
-
2:04 - 2:08But that same day, the Dream Act was blocked.
-
2:09 - 2:11That bill would give immigrant children
-
2:11 - 2:14-who’ve never pledged allegiance to any flag but ours -
-
2:14 - 2:19the chance to earn their citizenship. Simple. Important.
-
2:20 - 2:25And I was in a small office on the second floor of the West Wing with eight other staffers
-
2:25 - 2:28and we had worked our hearts out
-
2:28 - 2:30and cared very deeply about what this would mean for other young people.
-
2:30 - 2:35There wasn’t a dry eye in the room, tears of joy for the history that was made,
-
2:35 - 2:39but also tears of sadness because some American dreams would still be deferred.
-
2:39 - 2:43And about five minutes later, President Obama walked in, sleeves rolled up.
-
2:43 - 2:49And he said to us, “This is not over. We’re gonna keep fighting. I’m gonna keep fighting.
-
2:49 - 2:51I need young people to keep fighting.”
-
2:51 - 2:53That’s why we’re here!
-
2:56 - 3:01A few months later, President Obama fought to keep taxes
-
3:01 - 3:04from going up on middle-class families.
-
3:04 - 3:06Our Republican friends said, “Sure you can do that.”
-
3:06 - 3:09But one of the things they were willing to trade
-
3:09 - 3:12is a little item called the college tax credit,
-
3:12 - 3:17which today is saving students up to $10,000 over four years of school.
-
3:18 - 3:23Now, President Obama paid off his own student loans not too long ago.
-
3:23 - 3:25So he remembers what that's like.
-
3:25 - 3:29And he said that making it easier to go to college and get technical training
-
3:29 - 3:34is exactly how we grow our economy and create jobs and out-compete the world.
-
3:35 - 3:41So he stood firm. And that tuition tax credit is still there.
-
3:44 - 3:50But here is the thing: if we don’t register, if we don’t vote, it won’t be.
-
3:51 - 3:55I volunteered in Iowa in 2007 because, like you,
-
3:55 - 4:00I had friends serving in Iraq, I had friends who were looking for jobs,
-
4:00 - 4:03others who couldn’t go to the doctor because they couldn’t afford it.
-
4:03 - 4:04I felt that had to change.
-
4:04 - 4:06So I knocked on some doors.
-
4:06 - 4:07I registered voters.
-
4:07 - 4:09And I’m volunteering again
-
4:10 - 4:15because my friend Matt got a job at a Detroit car company that still exists,
-
4:15 - 4:18and Lauren can get the prescription that she needs.
-
4:18 - 4:21I’m volunteering because Josiah is back from Iraq,
-
4:21 - 4:23Chris is finishing college on the GI Bill,
-
4:23 - 4:26and three weeks ago, my buddy Kevin’s boyfriend was able to
-
4:26 - 4:29watch him graduate from Marine Corps training.
-
4:29 - 4:30That’s change!
-
4:33 - 4:36And we can’t turn back now.
-
4:36 - 4:40So before I close
-
4:40 - 4:44- and as I wonder which Twitter hash tags you’ll start using when I’m done talking,
-
4:44 - 4:46hash tag #sexyface? -
-
4:47 - 4:50I ask all of you young people to join me.
-
4:50 - 4:52You don’t even have to put pants on.
-
4:54 - 4:58Go to commit.barackobama.com and register right there.
-
4:58 - 5:02And you know what? the oldies out there, you guys can do it too, OK?
-
5:02 - 5:06Let’s keep fighting for a president who has never stopped fighting for us!
-
5:06 - 5:07Go online.
-
5:07 - 5:09Find your local campaign office.
-
5:09 - 5:12Call your friends. Call some strangers. Volunteer.
-
5:12 - 5:14That’s how we’re going to win this thing.
-
5:14 - 5:19Now, I really, really enjoyed listening to Rahm’s speech.
-
5:19 - 5:22But he’s a mayor now, so he can’t use four-letter words.
-
5:23 - 5:28But I’m no mayor. So I’ve got one for you:
-
5:28 - 5:29Vote.
-
5:29 - 5:31Thank you very much.
