Kal Penn's DNC Speech
-
Not Synced[Off voice] Please welcome Kal Penn...
-
Not Synced[Applause and cheers]
-
Not Synced[Kal Penn] Thank you - thank you guys
-
Not SyncedI am honored to accept your nomination for president of the United States!
-
Not SyncedWait, this isn’t my speech.
-
Not SyncedPrompter guy, can we pull up my speech?
-
Not SyncedWhile we’re waiting:
-
Not Synceda special message for those of you at home who have recently turned 18.
-
Not SyncedGood news. I can now legally register you to vote.
-
Not SyncedI’ve worked on a lot of fun movies,
-
Not Syncedbut my favorite job was having a boss who gave the order to take out bin Laden
-
Not Syncedand who’s cool with all of us getting gay-married.
-
Not SyncedThank you, invisible man in the chair, for that,
-
Not Syncedand for giving my friends access to affordable health insurance
-
Not Syncedand doubling funding for the Pell grant.
-
Not SyncedI started volunteering for Barack Obama in 2007.
-
Not SyncedBut nothing compares to what I saw behind the scenes at the White House,
-
Not Syncedwhen I had the honor to serve for two years
-
Not Syncedas President Obama’s liaison to young Americans.
-
Not SyncedI saw how hard he fights for us.
-
Not SyncedOne of the most special days was a Saturday in 2010.
-
Not SyncedThe Senate repealed “don’t ask, don’t tell,”
-
Not Syncedso anyone can serve the country they love, regardless of whom they love.
-
Not SyncedBut that same day, the Dream Act was blocked.
-
Not SyncedThat bill would give immigrant children
-
Not Synced- who’ve never pledged allegiance to any flag but ours -
-
Not Syncedthe chance to earn their citizenship. Simple. Important.
-
Not SyncedI was in a small office on the second floor of the West Wing with eight other staffers.
-
Not SyncedWe’d worked our hearts out and cared deeply about
-
Not Syncedwhat this would mean for other young people.
-
Not SyncedThere wasn’t a dry eye in the room, tears of joy for the history that was made,
-
Not Syncedbut also tears of sadness because some American dreams would still be deferred.
-
Not SyncedFive minutes later, President Obama walked in, sleeves rolled up.
-
Not SyncedHe said to us, “This is not over. We’re gonna keep fighting. I’m gonna keep fighting.
-
Not SyncedI need young people to keep fighting.”
-
Not SyncedThat’s why we’re here!
-
Not SyncedA few months later, President Obama fought to keep taxes
-
Not Syncedfrom going up on middle-class families.
-
Not SyncedOur Republican friends said, “Sure you can do that.”
-
Not SyncedBut one of the things they were willing to trade
-
Not Syncedis a little item called the college tax credit,
-
Not Syncedwhich today is saving students up to $10,000 over four years of school.
-
Not SyncedNow, President Obama paid off his own student loans not too long ago.
-
Not SyncedHe remembers what it is like.
-
Not SyncedHe said making it easier to go to college and get technical training
-
Not Syncedis exactly how we grow our economy, create jobs and out-compete the world.
-
Not SyncedSo he stood firm. And that tuition tax credit is still here.
-
Not SyncedBut, if we don’t register, if we don’t vote, it won’t be.
-
Not SyncedI volunteered in Iowa in 2007 because, like you,
-
Not SyncedI had friends serving in Iraq, friends who were looking for jobs,
-
Not Syncedothers who couldn’t go to the doctor because they couldn’t afford it.
-
Not SyncedI felt that had to change.
-
Not SyncedSo I knocked on doors.
-
Not SyncedI registered voters.
-
Not SyncedAnd I’m volunteering again now
-
Not Syncedbecause my friend Matt got a job at a Detroit car company that still exists,
-
Not Syncedand Lauren can get the prescription she needs.
-
Not SyncedI’m volunteering because Josiah is back from Iraq,
-
Not SyncedChris is finishing college on the GI Bill,
-
Not Syncedand three weeks ago, my buddy Kevin’s boyfriend was able to
-
Not Syncedwatch him graduate from Marine Corps training.
-
Not SyncedThat’s change!
-
Not SyncedAnd we can’t turn back now.
-
Not SyncedSo before I close
-
Not Synced- and as I wonder which Twitter hash tags you’ll start using when I’m done talking
-
Not Synced(hash tag sexy face) -
-
Not SyncedI ask all you young people to join me.
-
Not SyncedYou don’t even have to put pants on.
-
Not SyncedGo to commit.barackobama.com and register right there.
-
Not SyncedAnd the oldies out there, you can do it, too.
-
Not SyncedLet’s keep fighting for a president who’s never stopped fighting for us!
-
Not SyncedGo online.
-
Not SyncedFind your local campaign office.
-
Not SyncedCall your friends. Call some strangers. Volunteer.
-
Not SyncedThat’s how we’re going to win this thing.
-
Not SyncedI really enjoyed listening to Rahm’s speech.
-
Not SyncedBut he’s a mayor now, so he can’t use four-letter words.
-
Not SyncedBut I’m no mayor. So I’ve got one for you:
-
Not SyncedVote.
