  • 0:00 - 0:01
do you two want to see what it looks like
    before we start?
  • 0:01 - 0:04
if you look right here you can see
    a little tv screen
  • 0:08 - 0:11
    who's that right there?
  • 0:13 - 0:14
this first question's for you gabby
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    — Are you ready?
    — Okay
  • 0:16 - 0:20
    Who is this?
    — Brother
  • 0:20 - 0:24
    what's your brother like?
  • 0:24 - 0:26
i love you are you interested you're
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    gonna sing
  • 0:27 - 0:32
what do you want to sing i need
  • 0:40 - 0:42
she's so much fun to watch i will put
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    her in bed too
  • 0:44 - 0:47
go to bed and she'll bounce around and
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    just perform
  • 0:48 - 0:50
in her bed for a good two hours and it's
  • 0:50 - 0:52
just fun to sit there on the monitor and
  • 0:52 - 0:59
watch to see what she's going to do
  • 0:59 - 1:01
would it be correct to describe gabby as
  • 1:01 - 1:02
    happy yes
  • 1:02 - 1:05
yes and that was very important because
  • 1:05 - 1:06
we wanted to make sure we were gonna
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    have a happy child
  • 1:08 - 1:11
that was our that was what we were
  • 1:11 - 1:13
praying for and we got it
  • 1:18 - 1:21
glad you got fun let's kick the monkeys
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    one more time
  • 1:26 - 1:30
she's a wiggle worm and thank god she is
  • 1:30 - 1:32
so little so i can manage her
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    and she's not necessarily throwing
  • 1:34 - 1:36
around wait can you sit up
  • 1:36 - 1:40
    no please
  • 1:40 - 1:43
gaby have a mind of her own?
    yes she does
  • 1:45 - 1:48
and it's fun to watch her little plane
  • 1:48 - 1:51
and what she's thinking what makes her tick
  • 1:52 - 1:54
and she's got it's fun to watch her
  • 1:54 - 1:55
because you never know what you're going to get
  • 1:56 - 2:00
    you sit down no
  • 2:00 - 2:01
gabby is it okay if i ask you and your
  • 2:01 - 2:04
    brother three questions
  • 2:07 - 2:09
when gabby was in here with her brother
  • 2:09 - 2:11
she would go to the door
  • 2:11 - 2:13
and pretend like she was opening it
  • 2:13 - 2:14
    because it annoyed her brother
  • 2:14 - 2:16
but she wouldn't open it she would just
  • 2:16 - 2:18
touch the handle and laugh yes does she like the teasing
  • 2:19 - 2:24
yes she likes to tease everybody
  • 2:25 - 2:28
and she no she can get away with it so
  • 2:28 - 2:30
when i say inside voice to her because
  • 2:30 - 2:30
she's this little loud person um she thinks
  • 2:34 - 2:35
it's funny when i say inside voice and then she
  • 2:36 - 2:39
is louder so it sort of backfires but
  • 2:39 - 2:41
she is a prankster and you can't help but laugh
  • 2:44 - 2:46
why is she able to get away with anything
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    because she's gaby
  • 2:50 - 2:53
she's just too cute you know she it happens
  • 3:04 - 3:06
gabby was born with neonatal prodroid syndrome
  • 3:08 - 3:12
it is a very rare syndrome at the time
  • 3:12 - 3:15
we were given that diagnosis there was
  • 3:15 - 3:19
70 cases since 1970. what do you think
  • 3:19 - 3:22
is the best thing about your sister
  • 3:22 - 3:25
that i i play with her and she plays with me
  • 3:27 - 3:29
there's not a lot of literature which was upsetting
  • 3:30 - 3:32
at the time for us because the
  • 3:32 - 3:34
literature that we were going by was one that was
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    for one of the other
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    genetic mutations under the name
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    neonatal protroid syndrome
  • 3:43 - 3:47
so um one thing that broke my heart was when we left
  • 3:48 - 3:50
the literature that we were given was
  • 3:50 - 3:51
    the average lifespan was
  • 3:51 - 3:55
    seven months old and um
  • 3:55 - 3:58
that i mean any mom that just had a baby
  • 3:58 - 4:00
reads that like hormones are not like you're heartbroken
  • 4:03 - 4:06
can you say hi hi good to see you tell
  • 4:06 - 4:09
chris what we were just doing
  • 4:10 - 4:14
what were we doing my name is monkey
  • 4:14 - 4:17
can you say we were watering the plant okay
  • 4:18 - 4:21
water plants yeah you did a good job
  • 4:21 - 4:24
she's very smart so she can read
  • 4:24 - 4:30
    um words individually but she
  • 4:30 - 4:32
if you ask her questions it's harder i
  • 4:32 - 4:33
    don't think she
  • 4:33 - 4:35
you know understands everything just yet
  • 4:35 - 4:36
but um i think i say that but she could just
  • 4:39 - 4:40
    be fooling us
  • 4:40 - 4:43
all too i don't know what do you like
  • 4:43 - 4:44
    more
  • 4:44 - 4:47
    dogs or cats
  • 4:55 - 5:00
    most you like rabbits
  • 5:04 - 5:08
    i love rabbits too
  • 5:08 - 5:11
    rabbits are a cool animal
  • 5:17 - 5:21
rabbits are the best it's perfect
  • 5:21 - 5:25
    again i don't know where
  • 5:31 - 5:32
what do you do when you're not sure what
  • 5:32 - 5:35
gabby says i tried to repeat it when she
  • 5:35 - 5:36
was younger she used to get really
  • 5:36 - 5:39
    frustrated and would start crying
  • 5:39 - 5:41
but now she'll repeat something over and
  • 5:41 - 5:43
over again until i repeat it back to her
  • 5:43 - 5:45
and if it's wrong then she will
  • 5:45 - 5:48
say no and keep going so i've got
  • 5:48 - 5:50
i gotta pick up on it right away or else
  • 5:50 - 5:53
brandon for the long haul i have another
  • 5:53 - 5:54
    question for you
  • 5:54 - 5:58
oh are you ready for it
  • 5:58 - 6:01
what do you like more the color green or
  • 6:01 - 6:03
    the color blue
  • 6:04 - 6:08
    my color
  • 6:09 - 6:12
    you like colorful rabbits
  • 6:13 - 6:15
    yes
  • 6:16 - 6:19
rabbits are the best do you like
  • 6:19 - 6:20
    thinking about rabbits
  • 6:20 - 6:24
    my pleasure your pleasure
  • 6:24 - 6:28
    may feel good baby
  • 6:28 - 6:31
    baby really
  • 6:31 - 6:36
that's so cool when she's just so
  • 6:36 - 6:40
good and bubby is your boy
  • 6:40 - 6:43
    i didn't know that
  • 6:44 - 6:46
thank you for telling me that and you
  • 6:46 - 6:47
    like tummy
  • 6:47 - 6:52
that's so cool the baby is coming
  • 6:52 - 6:56
she's got a big repertoire of sayings
  • 6:56 - 6:58
and she's memorizes things really quickly
  • 7:01 - 7:04
    gabby gabby
  • 7:04 - 7:07
has being gabby's dad changed how you
  • 7:07 - 7:08
    view the world
  • 7:08 - 7:11
absolutely yeah how so i think
  • 7:11 - 7:13
a couple different ways one you know
  • 7:13 - 7:16
    when gabby was born obviously
  • 7:16 - 7:18
she's got some challenges and some some
  • 7:18 - 7:19
    things that
  • 7:19 - 7:22
uh you know make things a little harder
  • 7:22 - 7:24
for her but i think it just puts things
  • 7:24 - 7:25
    in perspective for you
  • 7:25 - 7:28
you know like what's really important
  • 7:28 - 7:32
what's wrong you want to play with
  • 7:32 - 7:32
    numbers
  • 7:32 - 7:36
okay can i put her down yeah of course
  • 7:36 - 7:38
yeah and i just think perspective right
  • 7:38 - 7:40
so at the end of the day
  • 7:40 - 7:42
uh it makes you realize what the most
  • 7:42 - 7:43
    important things are with life
  • 7:43 - 7:46
you know and that's love how does
  • 7:46 - 7:47
    neonatal
  • 7:47 - 7:50
    project syndrome impact gabby
  • 7:50 - 7:53
so it makes it so she does not have um
  • 7:53 - 7:58
any fat she doesn't have teeth either
  • 7:58 - 8:02
um it makes her have thinner bones
  • 8:02 - 8:03
more brittle bones she was born with a
  • 8:03 - 8:05
congenital knee defect that we've had a
  • 8:05 - 8:07
    couple surgeries on
  • 8:07 - 8:10
    but other than that she
  • 8:10 - 8:14
is a smart little girl sit down
  • 8:14 - 8:17
let me sit down okay do you take care of
  • 8:17 - 8:18
    your sister
  • 8:18 - 8:21
yeah how do you feel when you take care
  • 8:21 - 8:24
of your sister um i feel excited
  • 8:33 - 8:36
gabby were you just making a silly face
  • 8:36 - 8:38
    at me when
  • 8:44 - 8:45
what was it like when gabby was first
  • 8:45 - 8:48
born it was hard we weren't given a
  • 8:48 - 8:50
    diagnosis we um at
  • 8:53 - 8:55
20 weeks we found out there was
  • 8:55 - 8:57
something wrong with our baby we saw an
  • 8:57 - 9:01
uh skull abnormality we potentially saw
  • 9:01 - 9:05
a heart issue and then she was small so
  • 9:05 - 9:07
um we went and did all the tests the
  • 9:07 - 9:08
doctors weren't able to tell us what was
  • 9:08 - 9:09
going on so you know when i had her
  • 9:13 - 9:16
um we didn't know there's a lot of things in
  • 9:17 - 9:18
that are taken out of your control and
  • 9:18 - 9:21
you don't know where to turn or what to
  • 9:21 - 9:21
    do and sometimes
  • 9:21 - 9:24
answers can't get provided for you so
  • 9:24 - 9:26
you search for the things that
  • 9:26 - 9:28
you can control and that's how do you
  • 9:28 - 9:30
love your kids and how do they love you back and
  • 9:31 - 9:33
i think that that's changed me enormously
  • 9:34 - 9:38
and then mommy i love mama
  • 9:38 - 9:41
why do you love mommy mom
  • 9:41 - 9:44
daddy daddy i love you gummy gummy i love you
  • 9:45 - 9:52
i love you no i love you more
  • 9:52 - 9:54
every day is something new so every day
  • 9:54 - 9:56
is a new milestone that she might hit
  • 9:56 - 9:58
every day is a new thing that she's
  • 9:58 - 10:00
    learned every day is a
  • 10:00 - 10:02
a new adventure can you spell cat can

  • 10:20 - 10:25
i think i'm most proud of gabby for
  • 10:25 - 10:26
i mean i could say that i'm proud of her
  • 10:26 - 10:28
for overcoming all the surgeries she's
  • 10:28 - 10:30
had and the challenges that she's had
  • 10:30 - 10:30
but i think i'm most proud of her for just
  • 10:32 - 10:34
the basic common things that you would
  • 10:34 - 10:35
be proud of any kid for that she loves her family that she's a
  • 10:38 - 10:40
good sister she is able to be affectionate
  • 10:46 - 10:50
uh she's able to listen uh she takes
