How a Hummingbird Flies in the Wind | ScienceTake | The New York Times
-
0:07 - 0:08(Gentle music plays)
Hummingbirds are great. -
0:08 - 0:09They're beautiful,
-
0:09 - 0:11they're fast
and when they hover, -
0:11 - 0:12it almost seems
like magic. -
0:13 - 0:16But how do they do
when the wind gets gusty? -
0:16 - 0:17That's what Australian
-
0:17 - 0:19and American scientists
wanted to find out -
0:19 - 0:21when they put the four
Ruby-throated -
0:21 - 0:22Hummingbirds
in a wind tunnel. -
0:22 - 0:23And the answer is,
-
0:23 - 0:24they just do great.
-
0:25 - 0:30The birds did just fine
in a steady wind, no surprise there. -
0:30 - 0:32They also did great
with the wind speed -
0:32 - 0:34varying
by as much as 15%. -
0:34 - 0:35Just to compare,
-
0:35 - 0:38small drones
can only handle 7%. -
0:38 - 0:39One way the birds cope
-
0:39 - 0:41is that they change
the angle and action -
0:41 - 0:43of each wing
independently, -
0:43 - 0:45in the space
of a wing beat. -
0:45 - 0:48Those wings are beating
40 times per second. -
0:49 - 0:51And constant
adjustment of the tail -
0:51 - 0:53is very important,
-
0:53 - 0:54both in its position
-
0:54 - 0:56and in how much
it was fanned out. -
0:56 - 0:59The next step the researchers
have in mind, -
0:59 - 1:00is to try to help
-
1:00 - 1:03the drones catch up,
by giving them tails. -
1:03 - 1:13(Music plays, increasing in volume)
