-
0:14 - 0:16There's lots of levels on which my
-
0:16 - 0:18paintings can be approached.
-
0:18 - 0:19(Pause)
-
0:19 - 0:22One can approach it as simply an object
-
0:22 - 0:24that has a certain kind of beauty.
-
0:24 - 0:26(Pause)
-
0:26 - 0:28One can approach it as
-
0:28 - 0:29(Pause)
-
0:29 - 0:32an object that has a text in it that has different
-
0:32 - 0:34levels of legibility.
-
0:34 - 0:38(Pause)
-
0:38 - 0:41If one knows James Baldwin and realizes
-
0:41 - 0:43that the text in my painting is from an
-
0:43 - 0:48essay that he's written, then that opens up
-
0:48 - 0:50the painting; gives it a different level of
-
0:50 - 0:51meaning.
-
0:51 - 0:55(Pause)
-
0:55 - 0:59The paintings that address the Million Man
-
0:59 - 1:03March were made in the mid '90's,
-
1:03 - 1:06a couple of years after Louis Farrakahn,
-
1:06 - 1:08the leader of the Nation of Islam
-
1:08 - 1:10organized a march on the mall in
-
1:10 - 1:15Washington, D.C. about the visibility and
-
1:15 - 1:18presence of black men in the country,
-
1:18 - 1:20which I find rather ironic, since
-
1:20 - 1:24black people have been in this country since the beginning
-
1:24 - 1:25before there was even a country
-
1:25 - 1:27(Pause)
-
1:27 - 1:29but we still feel the need to
-
1:29 - 1:31assert our personhood.
-
1:31 - 1:35(Pause)
-
1:35 - 1:38The irony of this march, perhaps, was that
-
1:38 - 1:42black women were encouraged to absent
-
1:42 - 1:45themselves from work, but not to attend
-
1:45 - 1:47the march as full participants.
-
1:47 - 1:49(Pause)
-
1:49 - 1:52When I started to think about making silk-screen
-
1:52 - 1:54paintings using images of the march,
-
1:54 - 1:57this kind of notion of absence or
-
1:57 - 1:59disappearance of women was something I
-
1:59 - 2:02was interested in and something I tried
-
2:02 - 2:05to find in the images themselves.
-
2:05 - 2:08(Pause)
-
2:08 - 2:11Like any artwork, things become richer
-
2:11 - 2:12if you know more about them,
-
2:13 - 2:15but I don't think that's crucial.
-
2:15 - 2:17Someone can walk into a museum and not
-
2:17 - 2:21know a single thing about a Jackson Pollock
-
2:21 - 2:24painting and still have a reaction to it;
-
2:24 - 2:27still get something from it. The thing
-
2:27 - 2:29that they get from it may be richer if they
-
2:29 - 2:32know more about it, but that's like
-
2:32 - 2:34anything (laughter), you know, that's
-
2:34 - 2:35about being in the world.
-
2:36 - 2:40(Silence)
