    What is ADHD?

    Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder,

    or ADHD,

    is a neurodevelopmental
    disorder as defined
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    by the American Psychiatric Association
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual,
  • 0:24 - 0:25
    or DSM.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    ADHD is currently diagnosed in both
  • 0:27 - 0:28
    children and adults,
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    based on the symptoms of inattention
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    and hyperactivity or impulsivity.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    Two of several signs
    of inattention include
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    making careless mistakes,
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    or having difficulty focusing.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    A few of the many signs of
    hyperactivity and impulsivity
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    include fidgeting or restlessness,
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    trouble sitting still,
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    or interrupting and blurting out answers.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    While everyone does
    these things sometimes,
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    not everyone has ADHD.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    An ADHD diagnosis requires
    at least six symptoms
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    that are beyond what is age appropriate,
  • 0:54 - 0:55
    that significantly impair multiple
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    aspects of one's life,
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    such as home, school and work,
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    that have persisted for
    at least six months,
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    been present since before the age of 12,
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    and can't be better explained
  • 1:04 - 1:05
    by a different condition.
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    Not everyone with ADHD has
  • 1:06 - 1:07
    the same symptoms.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    In fact, ADHD diagnoses
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    are separated into three presentations:
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    primarily inattentive,
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    primarily hyperactive or impulsive,
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    and combined type.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    There are different levels of severity
  • 1:18 - 1:19
    and people with ADHD
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    often have coexisting conditions,
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    such as learning disabilities,
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    anxiety, or depression.
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    They can also be gifted.
  • 1:26 - 1:27
    The term for this is "twice exceptional."
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    While there is no cure for ADHD,
  • 1:29 - 1:30
    it is highly treatable.
  • 1:30 - 1:31
    There is no single treatment
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    that works for everyone with ADHD
  • 1:33 - 1:36
    but the current recommendation
    based on a ton of research
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    is multimodal treatment.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    Medication to manage symptoms
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    and behavioral therapy
    to develop the skills
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    and strategies necessary
    to minimize impairment
  • 1:43 - 1:44
    Those with ADHD
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    often struggle with everyday tasks
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    and are at a higher risk for
    negative life outcomes
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    such as divorce,
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    job loss, accidents, and addiction.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    At the same time, many people with ADHD
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    credit their success
    to the unique ways in which
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    their brain works.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    ADHD symptoms,
  • 1:59 - 2:00
    such as impulsivity and distractability,
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    can translate into creativity, curiosity,
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    a willingness to take risks,
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    and an ability to think outside the box.

    Fun fact: the name "ADHD"
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    has only been around since 1987,
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    but the condition itself
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    has been described by physicians at least
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    as early as 1798.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    So, it's nothing new,
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    and our understanding of ADHD is
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    constantly evolving.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    What it is, what causes it,
  • 2:22 - 2:23
    how it affects us,
    and how to address it.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    For example: we might hear many experts
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    refer to it as an
    executive function disorder
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    And, while this isn't listed
    in the current DSM,
  • 2:30 - 2:31
    emotional dysregulation
  • 2:31 - 2:34
    is also a well-researched aspect of ADHD.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    As we learn more and more about ADHD,
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    the definition will definitely be updated
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    in both the DSM and the ICD
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    which is the other major reference
  • 2:42 - 2:43
    for medical definitions.
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    Whatever we call it and
  • 2:44 - 2:45
    however we define it,
  • 2:45 - 2:48
    those with ADHD experience its impact on
  • 2:48 - 2:49
    many aspects of their lives.
