Audre Lorde Resurrection Sunday 10 Love Poem
-
0:12 - 0:14Hello loved ones!
-
0:14 - 0:15I'm Dr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs,
-
0:15 - 0:20welcome back to Audre Lorde Resurrection Sunday.
-
0:20 - 0:24Um... catching up! I'm catching up
on the Sundays that I missed, -
0:24 - 0:30and this past weekend we were in Houston,
-
0:30 - 0:33facilitating Mobile Homecoming, grounding,
-
0:33 - 0:36with a team of awesome facilitators,
-
0:36 - 0:42The Fullness: an all day institute
on erotic power and spiritual wellness, -
0:42 - 0:46inspired by Audre Lorde's
"Uses of the Erotic/Power of the Erotic." -
0:46 - 0:48And it was incredible,
-
0:48 - 0:51about a hundred people
participated throughout the day, -
0:51 - 0:55and it was powerful to witness all these folks
-
0:55 - 1:00stepping into their full, embodied power
in relationship to their sexuality, -
1:00 - 1:05their sexual practice, their political practice,
their creative practice, -
1:05 - 1:09their spiritual and religious practice,
everything. -
1:09 - 1:15So, one of the poems that we used,
and did an oracle with during the institute, -
1:15 - 1:21is Audre Lorde's "Love Poem", from her collection
New York City Headshop and Museum. -
1:21 - 1:24And I'm gonna share it with you right now.
-
1:28 - 1:32"Love Poem"
-
1:32 - 1:37Speak earth and bless me with what is richest
-
1:37 - 1:41make sky flow honey out of my hips
-
1:41 - 1:43rigid as mountains
-
1:43 - 1:44spread over a valley
-
1:44 - 1:49carved out by the mouth of rain.
-
1:49 - 1:53And I knew when I entered her I was
-
1:53 - 1:56high wind in her forests
-
1:56 - 2:00hollow fingers whispering sound
-
2:00 - 2:03honey flowed from the split cup
-
2:03 - 2:06impaled on a lance of tongues
-
2:06 - 2:11on the tips of her breasts, on her navel
-
2:11 - 2:14and my breath, howling into her entrances
-
2:14 - 2:18through lungs of pain.
-
2:18 - 2:20Greedy as herring-gulls
-
2:20 - 2:22or a child
-
2:22 - 2:26I swing out over the earth
-
2:26 - 2:28over and over
-
2:28 - 2:30again.
-
2:33 - 2:36So, I love this poem for many reasons.
-
2:36 - 2:40Two that are really important in terms of
this whole context of survival, -
2:40 - 2:43and re-defining survival
with the guidance of Audre Lorde, -
2:43 - 2:51are that this is a poem where she talks explicitly
and makes a connection between -
2:51 - 2:58her sexual practice, her intimate embodied love
for women or for a woman, -
2:58 - 3:04and her spiritual practice of connecting with nature,
connecting with the earth itself, -
3:04 - 3:09and the valleys and the rain
and everything. -
3:09 - 3:13And I think that the Fullness Institute
was really all about that... -
3:13 - 3:19how can we activate our embodied practice,
and our intimacy with each other, -
3:19 - 3:21and our intimacy with ourselves
-
3:21 - 3:26as a resource that has us be more alive,
more connected with nature, -
3:26 - 3:29and more in tune with our spiritual power.
-
3:29 - 3:34So, we're really excited about what all the participants in the institute will do with that
-
3:34 - 3:36as they go forward.
-
3:36 - 3:40We are thrilled about all of
the co-sponsoring organizations, -
3:40 - 3:4725 different organizations who are doing this work,
helping people live fully in their bodies year round, -
3:47 - 3:50and you can check that out if you go to the
Mobile Homecoming tumblr: -
3:50 - 3:54mobilehomecoming.tumblr.com
-
3:54 - 3:57And the other thing that I think is
really important about this poem, -
3:57 - 4:00--and this speaks to your assignment should you choose to accept it--
-
4:00 - 4:05is that when Audre Lorde first submitted this poem for publication with her publisher at the time,
-
4:05 - 4:10Broadside Press, which is one of the most important
publishers of the black arts movement, -
4:10 - 4:14her editor pushed back
-
4:14 - 4:16and said that Oh, this is confusing,
-
4:16 - 4:19there's something you know about the pronouns,
-
4:19 - 4:21*"I" entered "her", you know, that doesn't...
-
4:21 - 4:24that doesn't really make sense...
-
4:24 - 4:25And Audre Lorde was like
-
4:25 - 4:26no, there's nothing wrong with the pronouns,
-
4:26 - 4:29y'know, I'm saying exactly what I want to say.
-
4:29 - 4:34But the way that Broadside Press
had been marketing her work -
4:34 - 4:38was as a mother, as a Black Nationalist woman,
as a teacher, -
4:38 - 4:40not as her whole self,
-
4:40 - 4:45as a Black, lesbian, warrior, poet, mother,
who she was. -
4:45 - 4:49And she took a stand with this particular poem,
-
4:49 - 4:51which Broadside Press did publish
in her next collection, -
4:51 - 4:53New York City Headshop and Museum,
-
4:53 - 4:56and she also read the poem publicly
all around New York City -
4:56 - 5:02as one of her acts of declaring who she was
and how she worked, -
5:02 - 5:04how her spiritual practice worked,
-
5:04 - 5:07what the role of her love for women
was in her life, -
5:07 - 5:12not just as an abstract idea, but also as
an embodied way of engaging with the planet. -
5:12 - 5:19And it was really a poem that allowed her
to unapologetically declare who she was, -
5:19 - 5:25and when someone interviewed her about why she named herself in these ways,
-
5:25 - 5:31why every time she spoke she came to say
"I am a Black lesbian warrior poet mother," -
5:31 - 5:34doing my work, come to ask you
are you doing yours?" -
5:34 - 5:38Someone asked her, y'know, why do you have this whole litany of words when you introduce yourself?
-
5:38 - 5:43And she shared that she had not known that
-
5:43 - 5:48Langston Hughes, a poet who had mentored her,
who she knew personally, -
5:48 - 5:53who was very important to her as a poet,
-
5:53 - 5:54as he's important to all of us,
-
5:54 - 5:56but also as a person who she knew,
-
5:56 - 5:59who gave her advice about her own poetry,
-
5:59 - 6:06she never knew about his sexuality,
about that aspect of his life until after he was dead. -
6:06 - 6:08And she decided at that moment,
-
6:08 - 6:13she wanted everyone to know
the parts of herself that mattered to her. -
6:13 - 6:18And she knew that she wouldn't be able to predict
who would find healing -
6:18 - 6:22in her ability to unapologetically declare
who she was, -
6:22 - 6:26who would be out there who could identify
with a piece of who she was -
6:26 - 6:29and would live to see her example.
-
6:29 - 6:32And I love that, I love hearing that and knowing that,
-
6:32 - 6:39because of course, I am a person
who found her work after she passed on. -
6:39 - 6:42I'm absolutely empowered by the unapologetic way
she described herself, -
6:42 - 6:50and I'm sure many of us, many of you watching
this video are also empowered by her bravery. -
6:50 - 6:54So! Your assignment for this week
in the name of Audre Lorde -
6:54 - 6:57is to think about that.
-
6:57 - 7:03What is something about yourself that
you want to declare more unapologetically? -
7:03 - 7:06It could have to do with your sexuality
or sensuality or your practice, -
7:06 - 7:08or it could really also be anything, y'know, like,
-
7:08 - 7:13if you are an artist but you've been kind of underplaying that part of who you are,
-
7:13 - 7:18what would it look like to unapologetically
declare yourself as an artist? -
7:18 - 7:23To highlight your creative practice
where people can see it. -
7:23 - 7:25Or whatever it is, you know,
-
7:25 - 7:28if you really wanna highlight your relationship with your siblings more...
-
7:28 - 7:32[ CANNOT HEAR THIS PART ]
-
7:32 - 7:33...what would it look like to say
-
7:33 - 7:39"Y'know what? Being a sister is a crucial part of who I am, and I really want to spread that to the world"
-
7:39 - 7:42Or for whatever reason.
-
7:42 - 7:43With no apologies.
-
7:43 - 7:45I mean, my siblings are amazing,
I'm obsessed with them. -
7:45 - 7:47No apologies for that.
-
7:47 - 7:53So whatever that is for you, the idea is for you to unapologetically express that this week.
-
7:53 - 7:57If you wanna leave a comment, if you wanna
email me I would love to hear about it, -
7:57 - 8:03and if you want a poem blessing
like the participants in the Institute got, -
8:03 - 8:07distilled from Audre Lorde's "Love Poem",
you can figure out how to do that, -
8:07 - 8:10either right below this video or at

-
8:13 - 8:16Thank you so much for listening,
for watching, -
8:16 - 8:18sending you much much much much love.
-
8:18 - 8:21MWAH! Happy Resurrection Sunday.
- Title:
- Audre Lorde Resurrection Sunday 10 Love Poem
- Description:
-
Launched on Nov. 17th 2013 on the 21st anniversary of Audre Lorde’s transition from an embodied warrior healer to an ancestral force, this is a weekly series of videos documenting and sharing my process of clarifying survival through a re-immersion in the words of Audre Lorde. To see all the videos so far check out: summerofourlorde.wordpress.com/resurrection-sundays/
This week's poem "Love Poem" is dedicated to the awesome participants and cosponsor's of http://www.mobilehomecoming.org/ 's The Fullness: A Day Long Institute on Erotic Power inspired by Audre Lorde's "Uses of the Erotic/Power of the Erotic." This poem was part of Audre Lorde's process of being unapologetic about her desire and we offered it in oracle form to the institute participants who challenged themselves and each other to unapologetically express their desire in their personal, political and spiritual lives! This is your assignment too. What are you ready to claim unapologetically?
To check out the ongoing work of the 25 organizations that helped to cosponsor the institute visit this page: http://mobilehomecoming.tumblr.com/post/75045307614/the-fullness-ongoing-resources-for-ecstatic-wellness
Every week as part of my practice of resurrecting Audre Lorde in my life and in our communities I will be making an alphabetical oracle from the weekly survival poem which will consist of up to 26 new poems based on the sacred source text. If you would like to receive a custom poem as a blessing for your journey you can with a donation of your choice to Eternal Summer of the Black Feminist Mind’s School of Our Lorde! summerofourlorde.wordpress.com
