In the Buddhist tradition, we speak of a kind of mind.
-
It's called "beginner's mind."
-
The beginner's mind is a very beautiful mind,
-
a source of energy,
-
the willingness to practice,
-
to gain freedom, release, and enlightenment,
-
and to serve others.
-
That is a tremendous source of energy that makes us very alive, very dynamic.
-
And with that source of energy, called beginner's mind,
-
we're not afraid of obstacles.
-
We are ready to surmount,
-
to overcome all kinds of obstacles
-
in order to realize our dream,
-
our intention,
-
our aspiration.
-
That is the willingness to get enlightened,
-
to get free in order to serve other living beings. 6

Siddhartha Gautama, when he left home at the age of 29, 7
-
had a very strong aspiration to practice. 7
-
At the age of 35, he got enlightened. 8
-
And he was able to begin serving humanity and other living beings. 9
-
And we, who are friends of the Buddha, who are his disciples, 10
-
we want to have that kind of aspiration, too. 10
-
We want to have that kind of willingness, too. 11
-
We want to have that kind of energy, too, so that we are strong enough to continue 12
-
with our practice to free ourselves and to serve other people. 12
-
And that is why our retreat has the title "Cultivating the Mind of Love." 13
-
The mind of love is the beginner's mind. 14
-
It's very beautiful, very strong. 14
-
And as a practitioner, we have to nourish that mind 15
-
so that it will last for a long time. 15
-
Because when we can keep that mind alive, we'll always be full of energy 16
-
in order to go on with the practice, 16
-
no matter how difficult the situation is. 16
-
So during this retreat, many of us have allowed the mind of love, 17
-
the mind of enlightenment, 17
-
to arise in our heart. 17
-
And if we know how to feed, how to maintain that mind of love, 18
-
the mind of enlightenment, "bodhicitta," alive, 18
-
then we will have enough energy to continue with our practice to serve other people. 18
-
We know that there's a lot of suffering in the world. 19
-
And sometimes we feel helpless. 19
-
But with bodhicitta, the mind of love, the mind of enlightenment, 20
-
we are not discouraged. 20
-
We'll be able to continue 21
-
so that we can relieve the suffering in us 21
-
and help relieve the suffering in society and in the world. 21
-
Today's Dharma talk will be a little bit difficult for those who come for the first time, 22
-
but if you have attended the first, second, third, or fourth day of this retreat, 22
-
it will be an easy Dharma talk. 22
-
It's only a continuation of the other talks. 23
-
Maybe if you have the CD of the other talks, 24
-
they will help us to understand deeply the talk today, 24
-
which is very much the cream of the teaching of the Buddha, 24
-
made into a short presentation. 24
-
In Buddhism, we speak of two kinds of truths: 25
-
the conventional truth and the ultimate truth. 25
-
And both kinds of truths are useful. 26
-
And in science also, 26
-
there are two kinds of truths. 26
-
There's a classical science represented by Newton. 27
-
It's equivalent to the conventional truth in Buddhism. 27
-
And there is modern physics with quantum physics, 28
-
quantum mechanics. 28
-
It has a very different way of looking at reality, of understanding reality. 29
-
And it also helps us understand the true nature of reality. 30
-
And in order to go to the second truth, 31
-
you have to be able to release what you have learned from the conventional truth. 31
-
What you have learned from Newton, 32
-
you have to release in order to truly understand 32
-
quantum mechanics and so on. 32
-
This is the same with the Buddhist teaching. 33
-
There is the conventional truth, where we speak of birth and death, 33
-
Buddha and living beings, enlightenment and delusion, 33
-
suffering and happiness. 33
-
But when we come to the ultimate truth, all these ideas about birth and death, 34
-
beginning and ending, inside/outside, 34
-
suffering and happiness, we have to overcome 34
-
in order to leave them behind before we can understand the absolute, ultimate truth. 34
-
And that kind of insight is the highest. 35
-
When you are able to touch the ultimate reality, you might call it God. 35
-
But in Buddhism, we do not use the word "God"; we use the word "suchness," the ultimate reality. 36
-
When we touch the ultimate reality, we are free from all notions, 37
-
including the notion of being and non-being, inside/outside, 37
-
subject and object. 37
-
In neuroscience, people still 38
-
struggle a little bit about 38
-
consciousness and the world of reality. 38
-
According to them, consciousness is something subjective "in here," 39
-
and reality is something "outside." 40
-
So how can the consciousness inside 40
-
reach out in order to understand the reality outside? 40
-
And science has begun to discover the truth, 41
-
that you cannot be an observer standing outside of the object you observe. 41
-
In order to understand, you should stop being an observer from the outside. 42
-
You should try to become a participant. 43
-
And scientists have already begun to speak about that. 43
-
So in order for true understanding to be possible, 44
-
you have to remove the frontier 44
-
between the observer and the object being observed, 44
-
whether that is an electron, or an atom, 44
-
or anything. 44
-
But if you think that you are an observer completely outside the object you observe, 45
-
there's no hope that you can truly understand the object of your observation. 45
-
You should try to be a participant, and not merely an observer from outside. 46
-
Modern science has begun to see that. 47
-
The insight that the Buddha got at the foot of the Bodhi Tree 47
-
is the kind of insight that helped him to be liberated from all fear, anger, and despair. 47
-
And that insight you have to get directly, and not through explanation. 48
-
Because when you explain, you offer notions and concepts. 49
-
But notions and concepts can never be the reality. 50
-
Suppose there is someone who has never eaten a fruit called kiwi, 51
-
and you try to tell him what the taste of the kiwi fruit is. 51
-
No matter how many notions and concepts you have, 51
-
it's impossible for him to get the true taste of the kiwi. 51
-
So true insight is like that. 52
-
Prajna, insight, is like that. 53
-
We can speak about insight, 53
-
but we are using notions and concepts. 54
-
We can make good use of notions and concepts in order to practice deep looking. 55
-
Deep looking is meditation, and we can get the insight by ourselves. 56
-
Insight cannot be given to us by another person. 57
-
If you don't eat the kiwi, you cannot understand, you cannot experience 57
-
the true taste of kiwi. You only have a notion. 58
-
That kind of insight, from time to time, is called Right View in Buddhism. 59
-
And Right View is one of the eight elements of the Noble Path, 59
-
presented by the Buddha. 60
-
There's a path leading to liberation and true happiness. 60
-
It's called the Noble Eightfold Path. 61
-
And we have learned about Right Mindfulness, which is one element, 61
-
Right Concentration, which is another element of the path. 61
-
And when we speak of Right View, 62
-
that is another element of the path. After that, we have Right Thinking, 62
-
Right Speech, Right Action, Right Diligence, we have learned. 62
-
And Right Livelihood. 63

And the Five Mindfulness Trainings that many of us received today, this morning, 63
-
is a very concrete expression of that path. 64

The path of Right View, Right Thinking, Right Speech, Right Action, 64

Right Livelihood, Right Diligence, Right Mindfulness, and Concentration. 64
