The art of bow-making
-
0:01 - 0:05It is said that the grass is always greener
-
0:05 - 0:08on the other side of the fence,
-
0:08 - 0:11and I believe this is true,
-
0:11 - 0:13especially when I hear President Obama
-
0:13 - 0:16often talk about the Korean education system
-
0:16 - 0:19as a benchmark of success.
-
0:19 - 0:22Well, I can tell you that,
-
0:22 - 0:25in the rigid structure and highly competitive nature
-
0:25 - 0:28of the Korean school system,
-
0:28 - 0:30also known as pressure cooker,
-
0:30 - 0:36not everyone can do well in that environment.
-
0:36 - 0:38While many people responded in different ways
-
0:38 - 0:41about our education system,
-
0:41 - 0:45my response to the high-pressure environment
-
0:45 - 0:48was making bows with pieces of wood
-
0:48 - 0:50found near my apartment building.
-
0:50 - 0:53Why bows?
-
0:53 - 0:56I'm not quite sure.
-
0:56 - 0:59Perhaps, in the face of constant pressure,
-
0:59 - 1:02my caveman instinct of survival
-
1:02 - 1:06has connected with the bows.
-
1:06 - 1:08If you think about it,
-
1:08 - 1:11the bow has really helped drive human survival
-
1:11 - 1:14since prehistoric times.
-
1:14 - 1:17The area within three kilometers of my home
-
1:17 - 1:19used to be a mulberry forest
-
1:19 - 1:22during the Joseon dynasty,
-
1:22 - 1:26where silkworms were fed with mulberry leaves.
-
1:26 - 1:31In order to raise the historical awareness of this fact,
-
1:31 - 1:35the government has planted mulberry trees.
-
1:35 - 1:37The seeds from these trees
-
1:37 - 1:40also have spread by birds here and there
-
1:40 - 1:43nearby the soundproof walls of the city expressway
-
1:43 - 1:48that has been built around the 1988 Olympics.
-
1:48 - 1:50The area near these walls,
-
1:50 - 1:53which nobody bothers to pay attention to,
-
1:53 - 1:56had been left free from major intervention,
-
1:56 - 2:02and this is where I first found my treasures.
-
2:02 - 2:05As I fell deeper into bow making,
-
2:05 - 2:10I began to search far and beyond my neighborhood.
-
2:10 - 2:12When I went on school field trips,
-
2:12 - 2:15family vacations, or simply on my way home
-
2:15 - 2:18from extracurricular classes,
-
2:18 - 2:20I wandered around wooded areas
-
2:20 - 2:22and gathered tree branches
-
2:22 - 2:26with the tools that I sneaked inside my school bag.
-
2:26 - 2:29And they would be somethings like saws, knives,
-
2:29 - 2:32sickles and axes
-
2:32 - 2:36that I covered up with a piece of towel.
-
2:36 - 2:38I would bring the branches home,
-
2:38 - 2:40riding buses and subways,
-
2:40 - 2:43barely holding them in my hands.
-
2:43 - 2:47And I did not bring the tools here to Long Beach.
-
2:47 - 2:49Airport security.
-
2:49 - 2:51(Laughter)
-
2:51 - 2:55In the privacy of my room, covered in sawdust,
-
2:55 - 2:59I would saw, trim and polish wood all night long
-
2:59 - 3:01until a bow took shape.
-
3:01 - 3:06One day, I was changing the shape of a bamboo piece
-
3:06 - 3:10and ended up setting the place on fire.
-
3:10 - 3:15Where? The rooftop of my apartment building,
-
3:15 - 3:19a place where 96 families call home.
-
3:19 - 3:21A customer from a department store across from my building
-
3:21 - 3:23called 911,
-
3:23 - 3:25and I ran downstairs to tell my mom
-
3:25 - 3:30with half of my hair burned.
-
3:30 - 3:32I want to take this opportunity
-
3:32 - 3:36to tell my mom, in the audience today:
-
3:36 - 3:38Mom, I was really sorry,
-
3:38 - 3:42and I will be more careful with open fire from now on.
-
3:42 - 3:45My mother had to do a lot of explaining,
-
3:45 - 3:47telling people that her son did not commit
-
3:47 - 3:50a premeditated arson.
-
3:53 - 3:57I also researched extensively on bows around the world.
-
3:57 - 3:59In that process, I tried to combine
-
3:59 - 4:02the different bows from across time and places
-
4:02 - 4:06to create the most effective bow.
-
4:06 - 4:08I also worked with many different types of wood,
-
4:08 - 4:11such as maple, yew and mulberry,
-
4:11 - 4:13and did many shooting experiments
-
4:13 - 4:16in the wooded area near the urban expressway
-
4:16 - 4:19that I mentioned before.
-
4:19 - 4:21The most effective bow for me
-
4:21 - 4:23would be like this.
-
4:23 - 4:28One: Curved tips can maximize the springiness
-
4:28 - 4:31when you draw and shoot the arrow.
-
4:31 - 4:36Two: Belly is drawn inward for higher draw weight,
-
4:36 - 4:40which means more power.
-
4:40 - 4:44Three: Sinew used in the outer layer of the limb
-
4:44 - 4:47for maximum tension storage.
-
4:47 - 4:55And four: Horn used to store energy in compression.
-
4:55 - 4:58After fixing, breaking, redesigning,
-
4:58 - 5:01mending, bending and amending,
-
5:01 - 5:04my ideal bow began to take shape,
-
5:04 - 5:08and when it was finally done,
-
5:08 - 5:12it looked like this.
-
5:13 - 5:15I was so proud of myself
-
5:15 - 5:21for inventing a perfect bow on my own.
-
5:21 - 5:24This is a picture of Korean traditional bows
-
5:24 - 5:26taken from a museum,
-
5:26 - 5:32and see how my bow resembles them.
-
5:32 - 5:33Thanks to my ancestors
-
5:33 - 5:39for robbing me of my invention. (Laughter)
-
5:40 - 5:41Through bowmaking,
-
5:41 - 5:44I came in contact with part of my heritage.
-
5:44 - 5:48Learning the information that has accumulated over time
-
5:48 - 5:51and reading the message left by my ancestors
-
5:51 - 5:53were better than any consolation therapy
-
5:53 - 5:58or piece of advice any living adults could give me.
-
5:58 - 6:01You see, I searched far and wide,
-
6:01 - 6:05but never bothered to look close and near.
-
6:05 - 6:07From this realization,
-
6:07 - 6:10I began to take interest in Korean history,
-
6:10 - 6:13which had never inspired me before.
-
6:13 - 6:17In the end, the grass is often greener
-
6:17 - 6:18on my side of the fence,
-
6:18 - 6:22although we don't realize it.
-
6:22 - 6:26Now, I am going to show you how my bow works.
-
6:26 - 6:29And let's see how this one works.
-
6:32 - 6:34This is a bamboo bow,
-
6:34 - 6:38with 45-pound draw weights.
-
6:38 - 6:40(Noise of shooting arrow)
-
6:40 - 6:45(Applause)
-
6:48 - 6:53A bow may function in a simple mechanism,
-
6:53 - 6:55but in order to make a good bow,
-
6:55 - 6:59a great amount of sensitivity is required.
-
6:59 - 7:02You need to console and communicate
-
7:02 - 7:05with the wood material.
-
7:05 - 7:06Each fiber in the wood
-
7:06 - 7:09has its own reason and function for being,
-
7:09 - 7:12and only through cooperation and harmony among them
-
7:12 - 7:16comes a great bow.
-
7:16 - 7:18I may be an [odd] student
-
7:18 - 7:20with unconventional interests,
-
7:20 - 7:23but I hope I am making a contribution
-
7:23 - 7:27by sharing my story with all of you.
-
7:27 - 7:29My ideal world is a place
-
7:29 - 7:31where no one is left behind,
-
7:31 - 7:35where everyone is needed exactly where they are,
-
7:35 - 7:38like the fibers and the tendons in a bow,
-
7:38 - 7:41a place where the strong is flexible
-
7:41 - 7:45and the vulnerable is resilient.
-
7:45 - 7:47The bow resembles me,
-
7:47 - 7:50and I resemble the bow.
-
7:50 - 7:55Now, I am shooting a part of myself to you.
-
7:55 - 7:58No, better yet, a part of my mind
-
7:58 - 8:00has just been shot over to your mind.
-
8:00 - 8:03Did it strike you?
-
8:03 - 8:04Thank you.
-
8:04 - 8:10(Applause)
