Mega Millions Jackpot Probability

  • 0:01 - 0:03
I've been asked to calculate the probability of winning
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    The Mega Millions Jackpot
  • 0:05 - 0:07
So that's what I thought I'd do this video on.
  • 0:07 - 0:11
So the first thing is to make sure we understand what winning the jackpot actually means.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
So there are going to be two bins of balls.
  • 0:14 - 0:20
One of them is going to have 56 balls. So 56 balls in one bin.
  • 0:20 - 0:23
And then another bin will have 45 balls in it.
  • 0:23 - 0:27
So 46 balls in this bin right here.
  • 0:27 - 0:32
So they are going to pick 5 balls from this bin right here, and you have
  • 0:32 - 0:36
to get the exact number of these five balls. It can be in any order, so let me just draw
  • 0:36 - 0:39
So its one ball, all shaded so it looks like a ball.
  • 0:39 - 0:45
two balls, three balls, four balls
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    and five balls
  • 0:48 - 0:53
And you just have to get the numbers in any order. And this is from the bin of 56
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    From a bin of 56.
  • 0:56 - 0:57
And then you have to get the megaball right.
  • 0:57 - 1:01
and they're just going to pick one ball from there, which they call the megaball.
  • 1:01 - 1:07
They're going to pick one ball from there. And obviously this is going to be one of 46
  • 1:07 - 1:09
So, from a bin of 46.
  • 1:09 - 1:14
So to figure out the probability of winning is going to be one of all the possible
  • 1:14 - 1:18
all of the possibilites of the numbers you can pick
  • 1:18 - 1:24
Its essentially all the combination of the white balls times the 46 possibilites for the mega ball
  • 1:24 - 1:27
So, think about the combinations about the white balls
  • 1:27 - 1:28
There are couple ways you could do it
  • 1:28 - 1:30
if you are thinking in combinatorix terms
  • 1:30 - 1:33
it would essentially be like saying
  • 1:33 - 1:36
out of a set of 56 things, I am going to choose
  • 1:36 - 1:38
I'm going to choose 5 of them
  • 1:38 - 1:40
Literally, you could do this as
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    56 choose 5
  • 1:41 - 1:45
Or, if you want to think of it in more conceptual terms
  • 1:45 - 1:49
the first ball I pick there is 56 possiblities
  • 1:49 - 1:51
Since we're not replacing the ball
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    The next ball I pick
  • 1:52 - 1:54
There are going to be 55 posibilites
  • 1:54 - 1:57
the ball after that there is going to be 54 possibilities.
  • 1:57 - 2:01
The ball after that there will be 53 possibilities
  • 2:01 - 2:04
The ball after that there is going to be 52 possiblites.
  • 2:04 - 2:08
    52, because I've already picked 4 balls
  • 2:08 - 2:11
Now this number right over hre
  • 2:11 - 2:12
when you multiply it out is the number of permutations
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    if I cared about order
  • 2:14 - 2:16
If I got that exact combination
  • 2:16 - 2:19
But to win this, you don't have to write it down in the same order
  • 2:19 - 2:22
You just have to get those numbers in any order
  • 2:22 - 2:27
So what you want to do is want to divide this by the number of ways that five things can actually be
  • 2:27 - 2:28
    ordered.
  • 2:28 - 2:34
And if you're ordering five things
  • 2:34 - 2:37
The first of the five things could take five different positions
  • 2:37 - 2:39
And the next one will have 4 positions left
  • 2:39 - 2:42
And the one after that will have 3 positions left
  • 2:42 - 2:44
and the one after that will have two positions
  • 2:44 - 2:47
And the fifth one will be completely determined because we've already placed the other four.
  • 2:47 - 2:49
So it will only have one position
  • 2:49 - 2:52
So when we calculate this part right over here
  • 2:52 - 2:55
This will tell us all of the combination of just the white balls
  • 2:55 - 2:56
    So let's calculate that
  • 2:56 - 3:00
So just the white balls, we have 55
  • 3:00 - 3:10
    sorry, 56 x 55 x 54 x 53 x 52
  • 3:10 - 3:11
and we're going to divide that
  • 3:11 - 3:18
    by 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1
  • 3:18 - 3:20
but we don't have to mutiply by one, but I'll do that just to show what we're doing
  • 3:20 - 3:24
And that gives us about 3.8 million
  • 3:24 - 3:28
So let me put that off screen, and let me write that number down
  • 3:28 - 3:36
So this comes out to 3 million 8 hundred and 19 thousand
  • 3:36 - 3:39
    3,819,816
  • 3:39 - 3:40
So thats the number of possiblities here
  • 3:40 - 3:42
So just your odds of just picking the white balls right
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    are one out of this
  • 3:44 - 3:45
assuming you only have one entry
  • 3:45 - 3:49
and then there are 46 possibilities for the orange balls
  • 3:49 - 3:51
so you're going to multiply that by 46
  • 3:51 - 3:53
And so that's going to get you
  • 3:53 - 3:55
So when you multiply it times 46
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    Bring the calculator back
  • 3:57 - 4:00
so we're going to multiply our previous answer
  • 4:00 - 4:01
    times 46
  • 4:01 - 4:02
Ans just means my previous answer
  • 4:02 - 4:09
    Times 46, I get a little under 176 million
  • 4:09 - 4:12
    A little under 176 million
  • 4:12 - 4:17
So that is, let me write that number
  • 4:17 - 4:26
    So that gives us 175,711,536
  • 4:26 - 4:28
So your odds of winning it, with one entry
  • 4:28 - 4:30
because this is the number of possiblities
  • 4:30 - 4:33
And essentially for $1, you are getting one of those possibilities.
  • 4:33 - 4:36
Your odds of winning is going to be one over this
  • 4:36 - 4:38
And to put this into a little context
  • 4:38 - 4:43
I looked it up on the internet of what your odds are of actually getting struck by lightning in your
  • 4:43 - 4:44
    lifetime
  • 4:44 - 4:47
And your odds of getting struck by lightning are 1 in 10,000
  • 4:47 - 4:52
1 in 10,000 chance of getting struck by lightning in your lifetime
  • 4:52 - 4:56
And we could roughly say that the odds of getting struck twice in your life time
  • 4:56 - 4:59
Or another way of saying it, the odds of you and your best friend
  • 4:59 - 5:03
both independently getting struck by lightning when you're not around eachother
  • 5:03 - 5:07
Is going to be 1 in 10,000 times 1 in 10,000
  • 5:07 - 5:12
and so that will get you 1 in - I have now eight zeros
  • 5:12 - 5:15
one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
  • 5:15 - 5:17
So that gives you one in one hundred million
  • 5:17 - 5:21
So you actually twice, almost this is very rough
  • 5:21 - 5:26
You're roughly twice as likely to get struck by lightning twice in your life
  • 5:26 - 5:30
    than to win the MegaJackpot!
