Children's Catechism - What is the Chief End of Man? - Paul Washer

  • 0:05 - 0:08
We're going to begin our children's sermon
  • 0:08 - 0:11
which several adults have told me
  • 0:11 - 0:14
that it's been very helpful to them.
  • 0:14 - 0:16
And what we're talking about, children,
  • 0:16 - 0:17
in the little handout that I've made
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    and was given out -
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    I probably need to give
it out next week again -
  • 0:21 - 0:25
is we're talking about the glory of God.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    Everything that we do,
  • 0:27 - 0:29
we are to do for the glory of God.
  • 0:29 - 0:32
Now, we began with a question.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
What is the chief end of man?
  • 0:35 - 0:39
That means, why were you made?
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    The 1689 London Confession
  • 0:41 - 0:45
and the Westminster Confession say this:
  • 0:45 - 0:50
You were made for the glory of God,
  • 0:50 - 0:53
to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
Now what we're studying right now
  • 0:55 - 0:58
is how do you glorify God?
  • 0:58 - 1:00
And one of the things that we mentioned
  • 1:00 - 1:03
that's so very important is this:
  • 1:03 - 1:07
You must recognize the worth of God.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    You must recognize His worth.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
That is why as we go on,
  • 1:11 - 1:13
we're going to teach you, children,
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    about the attributes of God.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
Do you know most adults that go to church
  • 1:17 - 1:19
and have gone to church all their life
  • 1:19 - 1:21
could not sit down and write out
  • 1:21 - 1:23
a list of what are the attributes
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    or the characteristics of God?
  • 1:25 - 1:28
But we don't want you to be that way.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
Because the beginning of all knowledge,
  • 1:31 - 1:32
    the greatest of all knowledge
  • 1:32 - 1:36
    is knowledge of God.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
And if you understand how worthy He is,
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    how valuable He is,
  • 1:41 - 1:44
then we won't have to psych you up.
  • 1:44 - 1:45
We won't have to send you off
  • 1:45 - 1:48
to some conference to get all psyched up
  • 1:48 - 1:49
for about a week or two,
  • 1:49 - 1:51
and then come back and die.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
If you know how wonderful He is,
  • 1:55 - 1:57
then you'll want to serve Him
  • 1:57 - 1:59
if He has worked in your heart.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    Now, last week,
  • 2:02 - 2:03
    we studied a few things
  • 2:03 - 2:05
that I want to look at.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    First of all,
  • 2:07 - 2:10
we discovered how valuable God is.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    That if you took everything
    that's in the world
  • 2:12 - 2:15
and you put it on one side of the scale,
  • 2:15 - 2:18
and you put God on the
    other side of the scale,
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    God would outweigh them all.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    He is worth more
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    than all the universe combined.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
But not only did we learn that,
  • 2:27 - 2:31
we also mentioned that God was beautiful.
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    That He was more beautiful
  • 2:33 - 2:37
than all the things He has made combined.
  • 2:37 - 2:39
Now I want you to listen to a verse.
  • 2:39 - 2:41
It's in Psalm 27:4 and it says this,
  • 2:41 - 2:44
"One thing I have asked of the Lord,
  • 2:44 - 2:46
that I shall seek, that I may dwell
  • 2:46 - 2:47
in the house of the Lord
  • 2:47 - 2:51
all the days of my life..." Why?
  • 2:51 - 2:53
"...To behold the beauty of the Lord
  • 2:53 - 2:55
and to meditate in His temple."
  • 2:55 - 2:58
And then in Psalm 96:6 it says this,
  • 2:58 - 3:02
    "Splendor and majesty are before Him;
  • 3:02 - 3:05
strength and beauty are in His sanctuary."
  • 3:05 - 3:09
Have you ever seen something so beautiful
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    that you just went (gasp)?
  • 3:11 - 3:12
    It took your breath away.
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    It was so beautiful.
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    A sunset.
  • 3:17 - 3:19
A beautiful scenery in the wilderness.
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    Maybe the trees turning
    their different colors
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    or a magnificent sunset.
  • 3:23 - 3:26
You just literally thought it was
going to take your breath away.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
Well, let me share with you something.
  • 3:28 - 3:31
    Now children, listen to this.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    God is so beautiful
  • 3:34 - 3:37
that if He right now showed you
  • 3:37 - 3:40
just a glimpse of His beauty,
  • 3:40 - 3:43
that beauty would be so great
  • 3:43 - 3:47
    that your mind would not
    be able to comprehend it.
  • 3:47 - 3:50
It would, in a sense, drive you crazy.
  • 3:50 - 3:52
It would be so magnificent, so big,
  • 3:52 - 3:56
so beautiful that it would almost
  • 3:56 - 3:57
    explode your mind
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    and definitely explode your heart.
  • 3:59 - 4:03
That is why in order to be in Heaven
  • 4:03 - 4:06
and to catch a glimpse of God there,
  • 4:06 - 4:09
    you must be supernaturally strengthened.
  • 4:09 - 4:10
You see, we're not serving God
  • 4:10 - 4:12
because we want to be religious
  • 4:12 - 4:14
or we like a bunch of rules.
  • 4:14 - 4:16
That's not why we serve God.
  • 4:16 - 4:21
    We serve God because
    He's absolutely beautiful!
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    Now adults, it might
    be a little bit difficult
  • 4:23 - 4:25
to explain this to your children,
  • 4:25 - 4:28
    but here's something that you
    might want to think about.
  • 4:28 - 4:31
    God is so beautiful
  • 4:31 - 4:37
    that it is an act of condescension;
  • 4:37 - 4:40
it is an act of humility
    on the part of God
  • 4:40 - 4:43
to turn His eyes off of Himself
  • 4:43 - 4:46
to look at any other thing.
  • 4:46 - 4:49
    He has to humble Himself.
  • 4:49 - 4:51
And it's one of the reasons,
  • 4:51 - 4:52
we can also get into this,
  • 4:52 - 4:54
    that throughout all eternity,
  • 4:54 - 4:58
God has beheld His own beauty
  • 4:58 - 4:59
    in great joy
  • 4:59 - 5:02
by looking into the face of His Son
  • 5:02 - 5:04
    Who is the perfect reflection
  • 5:04 - 5:07
    of the beauty of God.
  • 5:07 - 5:09
    You see, it's marvelous!
  • 5:09 - 5:12
It's exciting! It's wonderful to know Him!
  • 5:12 - 5:14
I don't get up in the morning
  • 5:14 - 5:15
and read five chapters just because
  • 5:15 - 5:18
I want to say I was able
    to read five chapters
  • 5:18 - 5:19
    or ten chapters.
  • 5:19 - 5:21
I get up every morning in the same way
  • 5:21 - 5:25
that a miner gets up and
    goes down into the mine
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    looking for gold;
  • 5:27 - 5:29
    looking for precious jewels.
  • 5:29 - 5:32
    So God is beautiful.
  • 5:32 - 5:34
Now, I want to say one
    more thing about God
  • 5:34 - 5:36
    before we go on.
  • 5:36 - 5:38
Remember, we said that God was worth more
  • 5:38 - 5:39
    than all the universe.
  • 5:39 - 5:42
We also said that God was more beautiful
  • 5:42 - 5:44
    than all the universe.
  • 5:44 - 5:46
But now, I want you to also
    understand something.
  • 5:46 - 5:48
And children, this is very important.
  • 5:48 - 5:49
    Parents, this is why
  • 5:49 - 5:51
before your child leaves the home,
  • 5:51 - 5:53
they should go through Proverbs with you
  • 5:53 - 5:56
at least 20 or 30 times.
  • 5:56 - 6:00
    God is the smartest.
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    He is the most intelligent.
  • 6:02 - 6:05
    We've got students here
    today from Virginia Tech,
  • 6:05 - 6:06
and I asked each one of them,
  • 6:06 - 6:07
    what do you do?
  • 6:07 - 6:09
    And they're all just brainiacs.
  • 6:09 - 6:13
    They're all engineers
and things like that you know.
  • 6:13 - 6:16
    All the things I shied
    away from in college.
  • 6:16 - 6:19
    But as smart as they
    are, they're not smart,
  • 6:19 - 6:20
    compared to God.
  • 6:20 - 6:25
Because the greatest wisdom in this world
  • 6:25 - 6:28
    is dumb compared to God.
  • 6:28 - 6:30
Now, let me just say this.
  • 6:30 - 6:31
    I've written something here
  • 6:31 - 6:32
    in your little study.
  • 6:32 - 6:35
Imagine all the most intelligent men
  • 6:35 - 6:36
    that ever lived
  • 6:36 - 6:38
    were sitting in a room
  • 6:38 - 6:40
and talking about their great ideas.
  • 6:40 - 6:42
It would be amazing to hear
  • 6:42 - 6:45
all the great things they knew,
  • 6:45 - 6:48
    but compared to God,
  • 6:48 - 6:50
    they know nothing.
  • 6:50 - 6:53
Now, let me share with you something.
  • 6:53 - 6:55
A lot of young people think they know
  • 6:55 - 6:57
    all the answers.
  • 6:57 - 6:58
    Let me tell you something,
  • 6:58 - 7:02
    you don't even know
    what the questions are.
  • 7:02 - 7:04
    Okay?
  • 7:04 - 7:09
    I desperately need God's wisdom.
  • 7:09 - 7:12
And I'm a lot older than you are.
  • 7:12 - 7:14
I study the book of Proverbs every day
  • 7:14 - 7:15
    with my children,
  • 7:15 - 7:18
not simply for them, but for me.
  • 7:18 - 7:21
If I do what I think is right
  • 7:21 - 7:24
    in my own eyes,
  • 7:24 - 7:25
    I'm dead.
  • 7:25 - 7:28
And literally, I'm not kidding. I'm dead.
  • 7:28 - 7:29
    It leads to death.
  • 7:29 - 7:32
To do what is right in your own eyes.
  • 7:32 - 7:35
You must do what is right
  • 7:35 - 7:37
    according to God's Word.
  • 7:37 - 7:40
Let me just read something to you.
  • 7:40 - 7:43
In Romans 11:33-34, it says this,
  • 7:43 - 7:45
"Oh, the depth of the riches
  • 7:45 - 7:49
both of the wisdom and knowledge of God.
  • 7:49 - 7:51
    How unsearchable are His judgments
  • 7:51 - 7:53
    and unfathomable His ways.
  • 7:53 - 7:56
For who has known the mind of the Lord
  • 7:56 - 7:59
or who has become His counselor?"
  • 7:59 - 8:02
Now, you say, okay, Brother Paul,
  • 8:02 - 8:04
I want to listen to God.
  • 8:04 - 8:06
Well, let me ask you a question.
  • 8:06 - 8:10
Do you listen to your parents?
  • 8:10 - 8:12
Are you someone who listens quietly
  • 8:12 - 8:14
    to obey your parents?
  • 8:14 - 8:15
Or are you someone that's always
  • 8:15 - 8:17
every time your dad speaks, you go,
  • 8:17 - 8:20
    "yes, but..."?
  • 8:20 - 8:23
Like you've got a better idea?
  • 8:23 - 8:25
You ought to listen to your parents.
  • 8:25 - 8:28
    And parents, if you speak
  • 8:28 - 8:30
    out of your own authority,
  • 8:30 - 8:32
    you're wrong.
  • 8:32 - 8:35
    If you're going to claim
    parental authority,
  • 8:35 - 8:39
then you better know the Scriptures
  • 8:39 - 8:41
so that when you do command
  • 8:41 - 8:43
and give guidance to your children,
  • 8:43 - 8:46
it is not your human wisdom
  • 8:46 - 8:48
or something just handed down to you,
  • 8:48 - 8:51
but it's the wisdom of Scripture.
  • 8:51 - 8:52
    The wisdom of Scripture.
  • 8:52 - 8:54
And so what do we know about God?
  • 8:54 - 8:56
    He is beautiful.
  • 8:56 - 8:58
    What else do we know?
  • 8:58 - 9:01
    He's very smart.
  • 9:01 - 9:03
Let me share with you just one thing
  • 9:03 - 9:04
    about how smart He is.
  • 9:04 - 9:08
When we say that God knows everything,
  • 9:08 - 9:11
we mean that He knows everything.
  • 9:11 - 9:13
    We use the word "infinite."
  • 9:13 - 9:15
    His knowledge has no end.
  • 9:15 - 9:17
    His knowledge is infinite.
  • 9:17 - 9:20
    It's exhaustive.
  • 9:20 - 9:23
    And it's without effort.
  • 9:23 - 9:25
    Now what do I mean?
  • 9:25 - 9:29
    God doesn't have to think
  • 9:29 - 9:32
and try to figure out what's going on.
  • 9:32 - 9:36
He doesn't have to research a topic.
  • 9:36 - 9:37
    He just knows it.
  • 9:37 - 9:41
    It's instantaneous and without effort.
  • 9:41 - 9:43
    That's amazing.
  • 9:43 - 9:47
    He knows all things infinitely
  • 9:47 - 9:50
    and without effort.
  • 9:50 - 9:51
When it talks about the books
  • 9:51 - 9:52
    on the day of judgment
  • 9:52 - 9:54
    and them being opened up,
  • 9:54 - 9:55
    it's speaking metaphorically.
  • 9:55 - 9:58
    He needs no book.
  • 9:58 - 9:59
He doesn't even need to remember
  • 9:59 - 10:01
    or think.
  • 10:01 - 10:04
    He knows.
  • 10:04 - 10:06
    He knows.
  • 10:06 - 10:08
    His knowledge was not gained.
  • 10:08 - 10:13
It simply was, is, and always will be.
  • 10:13 - 10:14
    Now that's a great God.
  • 10:14 - 10:16
And that's the God that we follow,
  • 10:16 - 10:17
    the God we love,
  • 10:17 - 10:21
    and the God we fear.
