Special SNEAK PEEK: The Future of Community Captions?
-
0:00 - 0:02TOM: Hello, Insiders!
-
0:02 - 0:05This week, I have a special guest.
-
0:05 - 0:07I've got James,
who's working on -
0:07 - 0:10some very important
captions planning. -
0:10 - 0:11Welcome to the show, James!
-
0:12 - 0:13JAMES: Hey, Tom!
Thanks for having me. -
0:13 - 0:15TOM: It's good to have you back, brother.
-
0:15 - 0:17Now today,
we're gonna talk -
0:18 - 0:20about...community captions.
-
0:21 - 0:22And what we're...
-
0:22 - 0:24We're gonna kind of be a little
-
0:24 - 0:27more transparent than
we usually are -
0:27 - 0:29around some of
these types of projects. -
0:29 - 0:32Because we're...
we're taking a hard look -
0:32 - 0:34on whether we should,
sort of, -
0:34 - 0:37continue supporting them,
or not. -
0:37 - 0:40And that's...
that's a pretty big decision. -
0:40 - 0:42So maybe...
can you give folks -
0:42 - 0:44a little bit of background on
-
0:44 - 0:46what is this feature,
-
0:46 - 0:47why did we do it,
and, you know, -
0:47 - 0:50why are we...why are we
thinking about it now? -
0:51 - 0:52JAMES: Yeah, absolutely. So...
-
0:54 - 0:55First, kind of as you said before,
this is something... -
0:55 - 0:57This is a new experiment
that we're trying here. -
0:57 - 1:00We do hear pretty often
from creators -
1:00 - 1:03that big decisions get made
without necessarily -
1:03 - 1:05creators feeling like
they have a chance to give input. -
1:05 - 1:08So, we are using this opportunity
-
1:08 - 1:11to take a step back
and ask creators what they think -
1:12 - 1:14about a decision,
before it gets made. -
1:14 - 1:18And so, we are starting to
-
1:18 - 1:20think about whether or not
we continue to have -
1:20 - 1:22the Community Captions feature,
or whether or not -
1:22 - 1:24it makes sense to shut it down.
-
1:25 - 1:27Before I go into more detail
about that, -
1:27 - 1:29let me just, kind of,
clarify a little bit -
1:29 - 1:31what that means.
-
1:31 - 1:33So, there are three ways
-
1:33 - 1:36that most creators
get captions or subtitles. -
1:37 - 1:40The first, that many of you
are probably familiar with, -
1:40 - 1:42are automatic captions.
-
1:43 - 1:45And those,
for a number of languages, -
1:45 - 1:47just happen automatically
on your video. -
1:49 - 1:52Second, many of you
upload them yourselves, -
1:52 - 1:53in some way, shape, or form.
-
1:53 - 1:56And then, the last way is
-
1:56 - 1:59there's a Community Captions feature, that...
-
1:59 - 2:01where you can opt in and allow
-
2:01 - 2:04anyone on the internet
to come and suggest -
2:04 - 2:06captions for your video.
-
2:06 - 2:08And it's really the third one
that we're wondering -
2:08 - 2:10if it makes sense to continue.
-
2:10 - 2:12Or if the effort
that would be spent, -
2:12 - 2:13kind of, building and maintaining it
-
2:13 - 2:15would be better spent
on other features. -
2:16 - 2:19TOM: Right. And in fairness,
it's probably... -
2:20 - 2:23We're leaning
in the direction of... -
2:23 - 2:24of deprecating it.
-
2:24 - 2:26And so this is
a very important conversation -
2:26 - 2:29because we also know
a lot of creators -
2:29 - 2:32feel passionately about captions.
-
2:32 - 2:33This idea of
-
2:34 - 2:37anyone in the world
can help you caption your video, -
2:37 - 2:38and then translate it,
-
2:38 - 2:40and make it kind of
more accessible -
2:41 - 2:43is an amazing vision.
-
2:44 - 2:46Like, what do you think is driving
-
2:46 - 2:48our contemplation of
-
2:49 - 2:51why we wouldn't continue
supporting that feature. -
2:51 - 2:53JAMES: I couldn't agree more with
how you framed it. -
2:53 - 2:56The reason that we're considering it
ultimately comes down to -
2:56 - 2:58not that many creators are
ultimately using it. -
2:58 - 3:00Just to be totally transparent,
-
3:00 - 3:02less than 1/1000th
of a percent -
3:02 - 3:05of channels approved
a community caption track -
3:05 - 3:06in the last month.
-
3:07 - 3:10And so we actually went
and started to talk with channels -
3:10 - 3:12about why they aren't using it.
-
3:12 - 3:14Particularly ones that had
used it in the past. -
3:14 - 3:16Or were large enough
to have an audience for it. -
3:17 - 3:19And some of the things
that we heard were -
3:19 - 3:21"Well, I really love that it exists."
-
3:21 - 3:24Right? Everyone...everyone is
positive on the theory. -
3:24 - 3:25And then they'd say "But..."
-
3:25 - 3:28And they'd say things like,
"But I've had problems with spam". -
3:28 - 3:30Or "It's not reliable enough for me".
-
3:30 - 3:33If we wanna have
the most accessible product possible. -
3:33 - 3:34For as many different people.
-
3:34 - 3:38We want creators to have
the widest possible audience for their videos. -
3:38 - 3:41This Community Captions feature
isn't accomplishing that goal. -
3:41 - 3:43Even though it sounds
really great in theory, -
3:44 - 3:46it only works
for the biggest channels, -
3:46 - 3:48and then there's problems with
spam and abuse, -
3:48 - 3:49and then people turn it off,
-
3:49 - 3:52and then consequently,
it's not on that much watch time. -
3:52 - 3:54So only about 0.2% of watch time
-
3:55 - 3:57has a community caption track on it.
-
3:57 - 3:59And so, that's what has us
leaning towards -
3:59 - 4:01actually shutting this...
this feature down. -
4:01 - 4:02TOM: I guess some people
may wonder, like, -
4:02 - 4:04"Hey! Well just leave it alone.
-
4:04 - 4:06"Just leave it as is.
Like, why don't you just... -
4:06 - 4:08"You don't have to
spend any more time on it. -
4:08 - 4:10"Like, just let it be."
-
4:10 - 4:12JAMES: Unfortunately,
that's not the reality. -
4:12 - 4:14I think it is...
-
4:15 - 4:18There's some pretty significant costs
to keeping it. -
4:18 - 4:21And I think we have
a responsibility to -
4:22 - 4:25make sure that we're investing
in the places -
4:25 - 4:29that will have the most,
kind of, return on investment here. -
4:29 - 4:32TOM: I totally get
where you're coming from. -
4:32 - 4:35And I hope others who are listening
understand too. -
4:35 - 4:37Like, part of the reason for this video
is to say "Hey, look! -
4:37 - 4:39"If there is an angle
we haven't thought about..." -
4:39 - 4:41You know, of course
we're gonna keep an open mind, -
4:41 - 4:43but we ultimately wanna do
the best thing -
4:43 - 4:45for the creator ecosystem overall.
-
4:45 - 4:48Where are we going with
the future of our captions roadmap? -
4:49 - 4:50JAMES: Yeah, I'm glad you asked.
-
4:50 - 4:54So, we absolutely are not
getting rid of the ability -
4:54 - 4:56for a creator to upload
-
4:56 - 4:59captions or translations
to their channel. -
4:59 - 5:01Like, that's not even in
the consideration set. -
5:02 - 5:03There's a bunch of work
that's continuing to happen -
5:03 - 5:05on automatic captions.
-
5:06 - 5:08Making them more accurate.
Supporting more languages. -
5:09 - 5:12Making them better support, kind of,
punctuation and grammar. -
5:12 - 5:14Capitalization.
And stuff like that. -
5:15 - 5:17We're coming at this from
wanting to have -
5:17 - 5:20the most accessible platform possible.
-
5:20 - 5:22It's purely about
how do we get there, -
5:22 - 5:24in a way that's safe for the platform,
-
5:24 - 5:25safe for creators.
-
5:25 - 5:28And, you know, these are...
These are the hard questions. -
5:28 - 5:30TOM: Yeah, that's a great point
about the trade-offs. -
5:30 - 5:33Because if you're hearing this
and you're like, -
5:33 - 5:35"Well, I'll vote for keeping it."
-
5:35 - 5:38What you're also voting for is
-
5:38 - 5:42less improvements to
the experience for creators -
5:42 - 5:44to upload their own captions.
-
5:44 - 5:47Less improvements
on the automated captions. -
5:48 - 5:53Less improvements on the ability to
refine the automated captions. -
5:53 - 5:55Setting aside this community captions stuff,
-
5:56 - 6:00when you think about
where you'd like to see captions go forward, -
6:01 - 6:04what are some of the things
that you're kind of excited -
6:04 - 6:06for us as a team to consider?
-
6:06 - 6:09JAMES: We are working on
a new captions editor, -
6:09 - 6:11that I am really pumped for.
-
6:11 - 6:13We actually have some creators
-
6:13 - 6:16out there using a alpha version,
-
6:16 - 6:18for the first time right now.
-
6:18 - 6:20I'm really excited to see
a tighter integration -
6:20 - 6:23between what the creator does
and auto captions. -
6:24 - 6:27And maybe the creator, auto captions,
and Google Translate. -
6:27 - 6:30There's opportunities maybe to extend
some of our permission tools. -
6:30 - 6:31Some of the creators
I spoke to said, -
6:32 - 6:34"Well actually, I don't use the project...
the product the way you intend. -
6:35 - 6:37"I have my three people
that caption all my videos. -
6:38 - 6:41"And I only approve things
that they write. -
6:42 - 6:44"And I would much rather
just be able to -
6:44 - 6:46"send them an invite
from Permissions, -
6:47 - 6:51"you know, to be able to kind of
access only the captions. -
6:51 - 6:53"And that would be a better workflow
for me and my team." -
6:53 - 6:55TOM: With that said,
are there any other questions -
6:55 - 6:57that you have, James,
-
6:57 - 6:58that you wanna hear
from the audience? -
6:59 - 7:01That they can give us feedback on,
-
7:01 - 7:03in terms of
how we're thinking about this. -
7:04 - 7:07JAMES: Yeah, we would love it
if people would weigh in here. -
7:07 - 7:10The best type of feedback
you can give us -
7:10 - 7:14is information about why and how
it would affect your channel, -
7:14 - 7:15if you don't think
that we should do this. -
7:15 - 7:18One more thing, if I could,
I do wanna just say -
7:18 - 7:20we realize this is a tough conversation
-
7:20 - 7:22and we thank you guys
for having it with us. -
7:22 - 7:24TOM: You know, James,
it just occurred to me that -
7:24 - 7:26the other thing that
we should mention is that -
7:27 - 7:29this is a bit more...
-
7:30 - 7:32a new format of an Insider video.
-
7:32 - 7:34Like, usually it's
-
7:34 - 7:36"Hey! Here's some
cool new stuff coming." -
7:36 - 7:39This one is a little bit
further upstream -
7:40 - 7:42in the product development process.
-
7:42 - 7:45And so, if you guys watching this
have feedback -
7:46 - 7:48on, you know...
-
7:48 - 7:51If you wanna see this much
of the sausage making. (LAUGHS) -
7:51 - 7:54Like, you know, we could
try and do more of it. -
7:54 - 7:55I think the risk is always, like,
-
7:55 - 7:57well you're never gonna make
everyone happy -
7:57 - 7:59and then people are
gonna be pissed, -
7:59 - 8:00if you go in a different direction.
-
8:01 - 8:02I think we're taking a bet here.
-
8:03 - 8:05That being more transparent
-
8:05 - 8:07and putting all
the cards on the table -
8:08 - 8:10might help us
make a better decision, -
8:10 - 8:11based on the input.
-
8:11 - 8:12JAMES: Yeah. This is brand new.
-
8:12 - 8:13First time we've done
something like this. -
8:13 - 8:14At least, as far as I know.
-
8:14 - 8:16TOM: So, make sure you subscribe
-
8:17 - 8:20to Creator Insider,
if you want to go -
8:20 - 8:22behind the curtain.
-
8:22 - 8:24And...(LAUGHS)
and really get involved -
8:24 - 8:25in our product development.
-
8:25 - 8:27This is definitely
"Inside Baseball" stuff. -
8:27 - 8:29But, hopefully,
some people find it helpful. -
8:29 - 8:30All right you guys,
keep it real. -
8:30 - 8:32We'll see you next time!
Thanks James! -
8:33 - 8:34JAMES: See ya!
