Lone Star Ruby Conference 2011 - Misunderstanding by Glenn Vanderburg

  • Not Synced
    Welcome. I'm Glenn Vanderburg.
  • Not Synced
Like James, I've spoken at every
    one of these conferences,
  • Not Synced
although I actually made it in person
    last year.
  • Not Synced
    but that's ok because I didn't have a baby
  • Not Synced
    being born that weekend.
  • Not Synced
I didn't know what James was going to
    talk about, and because
  • Not Synced
I was really bad about getting my topic
and abstract to Jim on time,
  • Not Synced
    James didn't know what
I was going to talk about.
  • Not Synced
And I joked with him earlier,
    two years ago,
  • Not Synced
he spoke right after me, and he said
  • Not Synced
"Wow,I have to get up here and talk and
  • Not Synced
follow Dave Thomas and Glenn Vanderburg.
    That's tough."
  • Not Synced
    So now turnabout's fair play
  • Not Synced
and I knew I'd have to get up here
    and follow James.
  • Not Synced
I could not have asked for a better
    set up though, because
  • Not Synced
my talk is really nicely complementary
to what James was trying to say.
  • Not Synced
James was talking about science, and
  • Not Synced
    science is what you do.
  • Not Synced
I'm going to talk more about
    the thinking aspects of it:
  • Not Synced
    how you evaluate the evidence
    that's in front of you
  • Not Synced
and how you reason through things
  • Not Synced
    and draw conclusions
  • Not Synced
and how you go ahead and get work done
  • Not Synced
and make decisions when you don't
    have good evidence right now
  • Not Synced
    and things like that.
  • Not Synced
Like James, I am a skeptic.
  • Not Synced
Unlike James, I am a Christian.
  • Not Synced
Some of you, in this room, I would wager,
  • Not Synced
would think those are a contradiction
    in terms.
  • Not Synced
I say that by way of full disclosure
  • Not Synced
not that this is a religious talk at all,
  • Not Synced
  • Not Synced
but if you choose to ignore everything I say
  • Not Synced
    based on that, go ahead.
  • Not Synced
    Anyway,
    the talk is called 'Misunderstanding'
  • Not Synced
and it's the first in a
series of talks I plan to do
  • Not Synced
that are named after good old Genesis [the band] songs.
