Mindful Consumption: The Way Out for Us as a Society | Thich Nhat Hanh (EN subtitles)

  • 0:04 - 0:07
    [Bell]
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    In Buddhism, we learn that
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    we can have happiness
  • 0:25 - 0:29
    with adequate
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    conditions for living.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    There's a teaching of
    "knowing we have enough".
  • 0:39 - 0:43
    When we're capable of building
    brotherhood and sisterhood,
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    father-son relationships,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    teacher-student relationships,...,
  • 0:48 - 0:52
even when we run a less luxurious car,
  • 0:52 - 0:57
even when we eat a less sumptuous meal,
  • 0:57 - 1:00
    happiness is still as great.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
In Buddhism, we talk about the Pure Land,
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    symbolizing a realm of happiness.
  • 1:15 - 1:18
In Plum Village, we practice living in
the Pure Land of the Present Moment.
  • 1:18 - 1:22
    All the miracles of life
  • 1:22 - 1:24
can be recognized and in touch with
  • 1:24 - 1:28
if we're able to come home to this moment.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
If we know how to build
    brotherhood and sisterhood,
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    if we get nourished by
    brotherhood and sisterhood,
  • 1:34 - 1:37
    by the happiness generated by
    brotherhood and sisterhood,
  • 1:37 - 1:41
    we can live a simple
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    yet content and happy life.
  • 1:45 - 1:46
When we know how to live
    a simple life happily,
  • 1:46 - 1:51
we no longer want to exploit
    natural resources on planet Earth.
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    We
  • 1:53 - 1:57
    no longer pollute the environment,
  • 1:57 - 2:01
and we leave behind a heritage
    for our children.
  • 2:01 - 2:05
So, knowing we've already had enough,
  • 2:05 - 2:07
being easily satisfied with what we have,
    having few desires and cravings,
  • 2:07 - 2:11
is a way of living that can save the planet
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    and
  • 2:12 - 2:17
    leave a better future for
    our children and grandchildren.
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    I see
  • 2:20 - 2:23
our way of living right now
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    destroys
  • 2:26 - 2:29
not only nature but also humans.
  • 2:30 - 2:34
I heard that here in Bình Định,
  • 2:34 - 2:38
    violent crimes among youths
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    are getting increasingly serious.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    Just this morning,
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    I received a letter.
  • 2:51 - 2:55
In this letter, they said, "Even at school,
children as young as 14 or 15 years olds
  • 2:55 - 2:58
    gang up,
  • 2:59 - 3:03
    and come against each other
in bloody street fights and killings.
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    Over trivial things,
  • 3:06 - 3:08
they easily get into shouting matches.
  • 3:10 - 3:13
Recently, on Monday the 4th of April, 2005,
  • 3:13 - 3:17
    a tragedy happened
    at Trung Vuong Senior High.
  • 3:17 - 3:25
Over a trivial matter at a classmate's birthday
party, they carried knives & sickles to school,
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    waited for the rival members
to appear at the school gate,
  • 3:27 - 3:30
    and stabbed their schoolmates
    many times to death.
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    This act of killing was
    brutal and cold-blooded
  • 3:33 - 3:37
    which could only be found
    in professional killer movies."
  • 3:41 - 3:46
In the West, as well as in Asia,
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    industrial development
  • 3:49 - 3:53
has given rise to such social evils.
  • 3:53 - 3:54
    Moreover,
  • 3:54 - 3:59
    young people nowadays over-consume
    movies, magazines, and media products
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    that have graphic scenes
    displaying violence and hostility,
  • 4:01 - 4:05
acts of revenge, and sensual images.
  • 4:05 - 4:08
    That's why our children
  • 4:08 - 4:11
    have easily picked up
    the substance of desires
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    and violence and aggression
  • 4:13 - 4:15
    from the contents and images
    in these media products.
  • 4:15 - 4:20
    That's why these social evils
happen to us in real life.
  • 4:21 - 4:24
    In Buddhism, we learn that
  • 4:25 - 4:29
we have to protect our body, heart and mind.
  • 4:29 - 4:33
When we eat and drink, we have to be careful
and mindful of what we eat and drink
  • 4:33 - 4:35
so that we don't bring toxins
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    into our body.
  • 4:37 - 4:43
When we consume media products such as
    books, magazines, movies, videos, photos,...,
  • 4:43 - 4:47
we have to consume them mindfully.
  • 4:47 - 4:50
    If we consume media products
  • 4:50 - 4:54
that contain toxins like sensual stimulation,
    rage, revenge-seeking, violence,...,
  • 4:54 - 4:56
    well,
  • 4:56 - 4:59
they become poisons in our heart and mind
  • 4:59 - 5:02
and in the hearts and minds of
    our children and grandchildren.
  • 5:02 - 5:05
    That's why observing
    the fifth mindfulness training
  • 5:06 - 5:09
    i.e. mindful consumption,
  • 5:09 - 5:12
can help keep us as a society
    from those social evils.
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    That's why
  • 5:14 - 5:18
one of the things Shakyamuni Buddha taught
  • 5:18 - 5:21
    that we should take seriously
  • 5:21 - 5:24
is we should never strengthen the potentialities, or water the seeds,
  • 5:24 - 5:25
    of violence and aggression,
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    of sensual stimulation and pleasures,
  • 5:27 - 5:29
of rage and revenge-seeking in us
  • 5:29 - 5:32
    by way of consumption.
  • 5:32 - 5:35
    That's why
  • 5:35 - 5:38
if we really want to protect
  • 5:38 - 5:40
    our children and grandchildren,
  • 5:40 - 5:43
if we really want to protect our society,
  • 5:43 - 5:46
we have to go on the path of mindfulness,
  • 5:46 - 5:51
    which means producing and
    consuming everything mindfully.
  • 5:51 - 5:56
    Teachers, educators, and politicians
  • 5:56 - 5:59
    in our country must pay
    special attention to this matter
  • 5:59 - 6:02
if we don't want our society
to go from bad to worse.
  • 6:02 - 6:04
I would like to stop right here to save
some time for questions and answers.
