June 29 - Second Story, Second Chance

  • 0:11 - 0:15
    Each time Nilda goes home,
    she's reminded of God's grace.
  • 0:15 - 0:19
It was just a few short years ago
that her home in Salvador, Brazil,
  • 0:19 - 0:23
    was destroyed by a landslide
    caused by heavy rain.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
    This wasn't the first time
    her world fell apart.
  • 0:26 - 0:30
When Nilda gave birth to her son, Nathan,
    her husband left her.
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    Nathan was born with autism
    and cerebral palsy,
  • 0:33 - 0:37
making it difficult to nurture him
    as a single mother.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
She had no money to spare
  • 0:39 - 0:43
because all of her money went toward
medical bills and treatments for her son.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    After the landslide,
Nilda had no money to rebuild her home.
  • 0:49 - 0:53
Her faith in God slipped away
as she fell into a deep depression.
  • 0:53 - 0:57
But then a fellow church member
heard what happened to Nilda's house
  • 0:57 - 0:59
and called for a church meeting.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
The local Adventist church banded together
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    and completely rebuilt Nilda's house.
  • 1:10 - 1:14
    They even reconstructed it
to a higher standard than before
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    to protect against flooding
    and landslides.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
They also added a second level
  • 1:19 - 1:23
to ensure there would always be
a dry living area for Nilda and Nathan.
  • 1:24 - 1:29
Nilda sometimes visits the lower level
where she and Nathan had lived before.
  • 1:29 - 1:33
    This space reminds her
of the rainy nights she didn't sleep,
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    hauling buckets of water
    out of the rooms.
  • 1:35 - 1:39
    Sometimes, the water would flood
high enough to reach her knees.
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    The furniture was destroyed
    over and over again.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    But Nilda's greatest concern
    was for Nathan
  • 1:45 - 1:47
to get a good night's sleep.
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    She remembers carrying
    Nathan up these stairs
  • 1:50 - 1:53
every time they needed to leave
    the house for his treatments
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    or simply to buy food.
  • 1:55 - 1:58
    It was a time
    when Nilda's hope was slipping.
  • 1:58 - 2:02
    But her Adventist neighbors' compassion
    gave her hope again.
  • 2:07 - 2:12
I saw the Lord moving in our lives
as He had compassion on me and my son.
  • 2:13 - 2:17
I saw that they did what God teaches,
which is to love your neighbors.
  • 2:17 - 2:23
Today, if I see a person in need,
I'll take the time to help them as well.
  • 2:23 - 2:27
    This is the love
the Lord wants us to exercise.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    They made me very happy.
  • 2:36 - 2:40
    Today, Nilda's house
proudly displays a sign that says,
  • 2:40 - 2:45
    "Construction of Hope, a project
    of the Seventh-day Adventist Church."
  • 2:45 - 2:49
    The community was so touched
by the generosity of the Adventist church
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    that they began visiting her
    and asking questions about it.
  • 2:53 - 2:56
    The church members
    not only rebuilt Nilda's home--
  • 2:56 - 2:59
God also used them to rebuild her faith.
  • 3:00 - 3:03
I open my doors to everyone.
  • 3:03 - 3:07
My house is a house of prayer
    for everyone in the community.
  • 3:07 - 3:10
The people come here to worship and sing.
  • 3:10 - 3:14
The things that were done in my life,
I try to pass on to others:
  • 3:15 - 3:19
the love and compassion we need
    to have for one another.
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    Nilda is passionate
    about spreading the gospel.
  • 3:23 - 3:27
She's the leader of a small group
that meets in her home every Friday night.
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    Through this small group,
  • 3:29 - 3:33
    many of her neighbors
have given their hearts to Jesus.
  • 3:36 - 3:40
I just want to thank God
for what He has done in my life
  • 3:40 - 3:42
and in the lives of my children.
  • 3:43 - 3:47
May God keep using me each day
    through His Holy Spirit
  • 3:47 - 3:52
that I may be a light
and a living example to show people
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    that Jesus is coming soon.
  • 3:57 - 4:00
    This quarter, a portion
    of your 13th Sabbath offering
  • 4:00 - 4:04
    will help construct a church
and Urban Center of Influence in Salvador,
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    where Nilda lives.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    It will also help
    another project in Brazil
  • 4:08 - 4:11
    and two projects in Peru.
  • 4:11 - 4:16
    Please pray for these projects
as God uses faithful church members
  • 4:16 - 4:19
to touch the lives of people
    throughout South America.
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    Thanks for supporting mission!
