The disarming case to act right now on climate change
-
0:07 - 0:10When I was about eight years old,
-
0:10 - 0:14I first heard about something
called climate change or global warming. -
0:16 - 0:20Apparently, that was something
humans have created by our way of living. -
0:21 - 0:25I was told to turn off
the lights to save energy -
0:25 - 0:28and to recycle paper to save resources.
-
0:30 - 0:33I remember thinking
that it was very strange -
0:33 - 0:37that humans, who are
an animal species among others, -
0:37 - 0:41could be capable of changing
the earth's climate. -
0:42 - 0:45Because if we were,
and if it was really happening, -
0:46 - 0:49we wouldn't be talking
about anything else. -
0:50 - 0:54As soon as you'd turn on the TV,
everything would be about that. -
0:54 - 0:58Headlines, radio, newspapers,
-
0:58 - 1:00you would never read or hear
about anything else, -
1:01 - 1:03as if there was a world war going on.
-
1:05 - 1:07But no one ever talked about it.
-
1:08 - 1:14If burning fossil fuels was so bad
that it threatened our very existence, -
1:15 - 1:17how could we just continue like before?
-
1:18 - 1:20Why were there no restrictions?
-
1:21 - 1:23Why wasn't it made illegal?
-
1:25 - 1:27To me, that did not add up.
-
1:28 - 1:30It was too unreal.
-
1:32 - 1:34So when I was 11, I became ill.
-
1:35 - 1:37I fell into depression,
-
1:37 - 1:38I stopped talking,
-
1:39 - 1:40and I stopped eating.
-
1:42 - 1:45In two months,
I lost about 10 kilos of weight. -
1:47 - 1:50Later on, I was diagnosed
with Asperger syndrome, -
1:50 - 1:53OCD and selective mutism.
-
1:54 - 1:57That basically means I only speak
when I think it's necessary. -
1:58 - 1:59Now is one of those moments.
-
1:59 - 2:00(Laughter)
-
2:00 - 2:10(Applause)
-
2:10 - 2:12For those of us who are on the spectrum,
-
2:12 - 2:14almost everything is black or white.
-
2:15 - 2:17We aren't very good at lying,
-
2:17 - 2:21and we usually don't enjoy
participating in this social game -
2:21 - 2:22that the rest of you seem so fond of.
-
2:23 - 2:24(Laughter)
-
2:25 - 2:28I think in many ways
that we autistic are the normal ones, -
2:28 - 2:30and the rest of the people
are pretty strange, -
2:30 - 2:31(Laughter)
-
2:31 - 2:34especially when it comes to
the sustainability crisis, -
2:35 - 2:38where everyone keeps saying
climate change is an existential threat -
2:39 - 2:41and the most important issue of all,
-
2:42 - 2:44and yet they just carry on like before.
-
2:45 - 2:47I don't understand that,
-
2:47 - 2:50because if the emissions have to stop,
-
2:50 - 2:52then we must stop the emissions.
-
2:53 - 2:55To me that is black or white.
-
2:55 - 2:58There are no gray areas
when it comes to survival. -
2:59 - 3:02Either we go on
as a civilization or we don't. -
3:02 - 3:04We have to change.
-
3:06 - 3:10Rich countries like Sweden
need to start reducing emissions -
3:10 - 3:13by at least 15 percent every year.
-
3:14 - 3:18And that is so that we can stay
below a two-degree warming target. -
3:19 - 3:22Yet, as the IPCC
have recently demonstrated, -
3:23 - 3:26aiming instead for 1.5 degrees Celsius
-
3:26 - 3:29would significantly
reduce the climate impacts. -
3:30 - 3:33But we can only imagine
what that means for reducing emissions. -
3:35 - 3:37You would think the media
and every one of our leaders -
3:37 - 3:40would be talking about nothing else,
-
3:40 - 3:41but they never even mention it.
-
3:43 - 3:45Nor does anyone ever mention
-
3:45 - 3:48the greenhouse gases
already locked in the system. -
3:48 - 3:51Nor that air pollution is hiding a warming
-
3:51 - 3:54so that when we stop burning fossil fuels,
-
3:54 - 3:57we already have an extra level of warming
-
3:57 - 4:01perhaps as high as
0.5 to 1.1 degrees Celsius. -
4:03 - 4:05Furthermore does hardly
anyone speak about the fact -
4:05 - 4:09that we are in the midst
of the sixth mass extinction, -
4:10 - 4:15with up to 200 species
going extinct every single day, -
4:16 - 4:20that the extinction rate today
-
4:20 - 4:24is between 1,000 and 10,000 times higher
-
4:24 - 4:25than what is seen as normal.
-
4:28 - 4:34Nor does hardly anyone ever speak about
the aspect of equity or climate justice, -
4:34 - 4:37clearly stated everywhere
in the Paris Agreement, -
4:37 - 4:41which is absolutely necessary
to make it work on a global scale. -
4:43 - 4:45That means that rich countries
-
4:45 - 4:49need to get down to zero emissions
within six to 12 years, -
4:50 - 4:52with today's emission speed.
-
4:54 - 4:56And that is so that people
in poorer countries -
4:56 - 4:59can have a chance to heighten
their standard of living -
4:59 - 5:02by building some of the infrastructure
that we have already built, -
5:03 - 5:06such as roads, schools, hospitals,
-
5:06 - 5:08clean drinking water,
electricity, and so on. -
5:10 - 5:14Because how can we expect
countries like India or Nigeria -
5:14 - 5:16to care about the climate crisis
-
5:16 - 5:21if we who already have everything
don't care even a second about it -- -
5:21 - 5:23or our actual commitments
to the Paris Agreement? -
5:26 - 5:30So, why are we not reducing our emissions?
-
5:31 - 5:34Why are they in fact still increasing?
-
5:36 - 5:38Are we knowingly causing
a mass extinction? -
5:40 - 5:41Are we evil?
-
5:43 - 5:45No, of course not.
-
5:46 - 5:47People keep doing what they do
-
5:47 - 5:50because the vast majority
doesn't have a clue -
5:50 - 5:53about the actual consequences
of our everyday life. -
5:54 - 5:57And they don't know
that rapid change is required. -
5:58 - 6:02We all think we know,
and we all think everybody knows, -
6:02 - 6:04but we don't.
-
6:05 - 6:06Because how could we?
-
6:08 - 6:10If there really was a crisis,
-
6:11 - 6:13and if this crisis was caused
by our emissions, -
6:14 - 6:16you would at least see some signs.
-
6:17 - 6:21Not just flooded cities,
tens of thousands of dead people -
6:21 - 6:25and whole nations leveled
to piles of torn down buildings. -
6:26 - 6:28You would see some restrictions.
-
6:28 - 6:30But no.
-
6:31 - 6:32And no one talks about it.
-
6:34 - 6:40There are no emergency meetings,
no headlines, no breaking news. -
6:40 - 6:43No one is acting
as if we were in a crisis. -
6:44 - 6:48Even most climate scientists
or green politicians -
6:48 - 6:52keep on flying around the world,
eating meat and dairy. -
6:56 - 7:02If I live to be 100,
I will be alive in the year 2103. -
7:03 - 7:09When you think about the future today,
you don't think beyond the year 2050. -
7:10 - 7:15By then, I will, in the best case,
not even have lived half of my life. -
7:16 - 7:17What happens next?
-
7:20 - 7:25The year 2078,
I will celebrate my 75th birthday. -
7:26 - 7:31If I have children or grandchildren,
maybe they will spend that day with me. -
7:32 - 7:34Maybe they will ask me about you,
-
7:35 - 7:39the people who were around back in 2018.
-
7:41 - 7:43Maybe they will ask
why you didn't do anything -
7:44 - 7:46while there still was time to act.
-
7:48 - 7:52What we do or don't do right now
will affect my entire life -
7:52 - 7:55and the lives of my children
and grandchildren. -
7:56 - 7:58What we do or don't do right now,
-
7:58 - 8:02me and my generation
can't undo in the future. -
8:06 - 8:09So when school
started in August of this year, -
8:09 - 8:11I decided that this was enough.
-
8:12 - 8:16I set myself down on the ground
outside the Swedish parliament. -
8:16 - 8:18I school striked for the climate.
-
8:20 - 8:23Some people say that
I should be in school instead. -
8:24 - 8:28Some people say that I should study
to become a climate scientist -
8:28 - 8:31so that I can "solve the climate crisis."
-
8:33 - 8:35But the climate crisis
has already been solved. -
8:36 - 8:39We already have
all the facts and solutions. -
8:40 - 8:42All we have to do is
to wake up and change. -
8:44 - 8:48And why should I be studying for a future
that soon will be no more -
8:49 - 8:52when no one is doing anything
whatsoever to save that future? -
8:54 - 8:57And what is the point of learning facts
in the school system -
8:58 - 8:59when the most important facts
-
8:59 - 9:03given by the finest science
of that same school system -
9:03 - 9:07clearly means nothing
to our politicians and our society? -
9:09 - 9:12Some people say that Sweden
is just a small country, -
9:13 - 9:15and that it doesn't matter what we do,
-
9:16 - 9:20but I think that if a few children
can get headlines all over the world -
9:20 - 9:22just by not coming to school
for a few weeks, -
9:23 - 9:26imagine what we could all do
together if you wanted to. -
9:26 - 9:30(Applause)
-
9:30 - 9:33Now we're almost at the end of my talk.
-
9:35 - 9:40And this is where people
usually start talking about hope, -
9:40 - 9:45solar panels, wind power,
circular economy, and so on, -
9:46 - 9:48but I'm not going to do that.
-
9:49 - 9:53We've had 30 years of pep-talking
and selling positive ideas. -
9:54 - 9:56And I'm sorry, but it doesn't work.
-
9:57 - 9:58Because if it would have,
-
9:58 - 10:00the emissions would have gone down by now.
-
10:01 - 10:02They haven't.
-
10:03 - 10:05And yes, we do need hope,
-
10:06 - 10:08of course we do.
-
10:08 - 10:12But the one thing we need
more than hope is action. -
10:13 - 10:15Once we start to act, hope is everywhere.
-
10:18 - 10:20So instead of looking for hope,
-
10:20 - 10:21look for action.
-
10:22 - 10:26Then, and only then, hope will come.
-
10:28 - 10:35Today, we use 100 million
barrels of oil every single day. -
10:36 - 10:38There are no politics to change that.
-
10:39 - 10:42There are no rules
to keep that oil in the ground. -
10:43 - 10:46So we can't save the world
by playing by the rules, -
10:47 - 10:49because the rules have to be changed.
-
10:50 - 10:52Everything needs to change,
-
10:53 - 10:54and it has to start today.
-
10:55 - 10:56Thank you.
-
10:56 - 11:01(Applause)
- Title:
- The disarming case to act right now on climate change
- Speaker:
- Greta Thunberg
- Description:
-
In this passionate call to action, 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg explains why, in August 2018, she walked out of school and organized a strike to raise awareness of global warming, protesting outside the Swedish parliament and grabbing the world's attention. "The climate crisis has already been solved. We already have all the facts and solutions," Thunberg says. "All we have to do is to wake up and change."
