Double MEGA-Bridges | China's Future MEGAPROJECTS: Part 8
-
0:01 - 0:05The final megaproject featured in our series
perfectly highlights both China’s ongoing -
0:05 - 0:11struggle to maintain its unprecedented growth,
and the unbelievable ambition -
0:11 - 0:12that’s fueling its rise.
-
0:12 - 0:16A constant challenge for most big cities is
that there’s only so much land to build -
0:16 - 0:21on. For Hong Kong and Shenzhen - two neighboring
metropolises with a total population of nearly -
0:21 - 0:2720 million - the boundary it’s running into
is water. Specifically, the Pearl River Delta, -
0:28 - 0:33which separates the uber-populated eastern
corridor from the far lesser populated cities -
0:33 - 0:36of Macau and Zhuhai on its western shore.
-
0:36 - 0:40Today, to get to Macau (Ma-Cow) after landing
at Hong Kong International airport, you are -
0:41 - 0:46faced with either a four hour drive around
the mouth of the delta, or a long ferry ride -
0:46 - 0:47through frequently rough waters.
-
0:48 - 0:54But that’s about to change, thanks to a
$17 billion six-lane, multi-part bridge that -
0:54 - 0:57will cut the trip down to a 45 minute drive.
-
0:57 - 1:03It is an incredibly complex project, and includes
cost and construction sharing agreements between -
1:02 - 1:07mainland China and its special administrative
regions of Hong Kong and Macau. -
1:08 - 1:13Inspired by both the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel
in the US and the Øresund Bridge that connects -
1:14 - 1:19Denmark and Sweden, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau
bridge will not only have to withstand typhoons, -
1:19 - 1:24but to avoid cutting off one of the world’s
busiest shipping routes into Hong Kong and -
1:24 - 1:32its unusually deep natural harbor it will
plunge underwater as a tunnel. And at 28km, -
1:31 - 1:39its longest stretch will be as if 15 Golden
Gate bridges were lined up end-to-end-to-end-to-end. -
1:39 - 1:44And that’s not even the craziest part. Because
Shenzhen doesn’t want to be left out, it -
1:44 - 1:50too will build a megabridge across the delta
just a few miles to the north. -
1:51 - 1:55Basically, the region is booming so fast,
and competition to tap into the cheaper land -
1:55 - 2:01and labor available on the western side is
so great, that Shenzhen and Hong Kong have -
2:01 - 2:06both committed to building multi-billion dollar
megabridges, and will essentially race to -
2:06 - 2:08see who finishes theirs first.
-
2:08 - 2:12As you can see from a close look at the map,
cities with populations totaling more than -
2:13 - 2:1940 million people surrounding the delta, thus
revealing the master plan: to lay the foundation -
2:19 - 2:24for China’s second megalopolis, an urban
area that could eventually exceed 100 million -
2:24 - 2:24residents.
-
2:25 - 2:29We started this video with Jing-Jin-Ji, and
we’re ending it with what I’m calling -
2:30 - 2:36Hong-Guang-Zhong. Two megalopolises, each
serving as perfect bookends to our story of -
2:36 - 2:41China, a country that is counting on infrastructure
megaprojects like those we’re profiled to -
2:41 - 2:46serve as the foundation for its rapid urbanization.
But how well it manages that urbanization -
2:47 - 2:54will largely define whether it continues its
ambitious rise for the rest of the 21st century. -
2:54 - 2:57Thanks for watching. And please hit that like

it as interesting as I did, and subscribe -

next time, for TDC, I’m Bryce Plank.
