Rackstraw Downes: Despre Pictori | "Exclusive" | Art21

Episode #166: Filmed in Presidio, Texas in late 2010, painter Rackstraw Downes describes why he views the work of some long-deceased painters to be relevant to his own contemporary practice. Paintings by such artists are shown including Claude Lorrain's "Sunrise" (1646-47), Jacob van Ruisdael's "Wheat Fields" (1670), and J.M.W. Turner's "The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons" (1834-35). Despite not using the same techniques as these painters, Downes seeks out their work because he considers it "useful," "provocative," and "like challenges."

Rackstraw Downes views the act of seeing and the art of representation as culturally taught, with different cultures accepting alternative delineations of the world as realistic. Often painted in a panoramic format, Downes's images evince careful attention to details as well as to broad expanses of their surroundings. Created plein air in locations as diverse as metropolitan New York, rural Maine, and coastal and inland Texas—without resorting to the use of photography—his compositions feature horizons that bend according to the way the eye naturally perceives.

Am fost foarte entuziasmat de anumiți artiști desigur.

Și în multe cazuri, erau artiști dintr-un alt secol.

Îmi place ce a spus Picasso odată. A spus,

„Unii tineri îmi par mai bătrâni decât unii artiști morți de secole.”

(Râsete) A fost bună asta.

Lucrările unor artiști morți de secole par

foarte potrivite intereselor tale de moment. Așa că îi cauți.

Le cauți lucrările. Și am bătut o cale lungă pentru a vedea expozițiile lui Claude Lorrain,

ale lui Jacob Van Ruisadael sau Constable și ale altora.

Pe Turner l-am evitat. Nu credeam că e bun deloc,

Apoi, încercând într-o zi să pictez fumul și aburii unei fabrici din Pittsburg,

mi-am zis, „Doamne, tipul ăla, Turner a fost un adevărat maestru a acestor vapori.”

Constable zicea că Turner are niște lucrări frumoase ce par

ar fi aburi hașurați. Și e exact așa.

Nu cunosc tehnica picturii lui Ruisdael.

Nu aș putea picta ca Ruisdael mai bine decât un om de pe lună.

Nu știu nimic despre emailare, nu o folosesc deloc.

Sunt un pictor direct- pun vopseaua direct pe pânză.

Dacă nu e bine, o iau jos și încerc să o așez diferit.

Nu aștept să se usuce ca mai apoi să pun un alt strat, și tot așa.

Nu lucrez în felul acesta.

Așa că nu am niciun fel de sentimentalism pentru acești pictorii.

Doar că îmi sunt utili și mă stimulează.

Sunt niște provocări pentru mine. Mă întreb dacă aș putea să fac asta la fel de bine.

Deci tehnic nu am acces la acei pictori,

Dar pot avea acces la ei prin diverse lucruri pe care le fac picturile lor.
