How women will lead us to freedom, justice and peace

  • Not Synced
I was the first woman president
  • Not Synced
    of an African nation.
  • Not Synced
And I do believe more countries
    are to try that.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause and cheers)
  • Not Synced
Once the glass ceiling has been broken,
  • Not Synced
it can never be put back together.
  • Not Synced
However, one will try to do that.
  • Not Synced
When I assumed the presidency of Liberia,
  • Not Synced
    in January 2006,
  • Not Synced
    we faced the tremendous challenges
    of a post-conflict nation:
  • Not Synced
    collasped economy,
  • Not Synced
    destroyed infrastructure,
  • Not Synced
    dysfunctional institutions,
  • Not Synced
    enormous debt,
  • Not Synced
    bloated civil service.
  • Not Synced
    We also faced the challenges
  • Not Synced
    of those left behind.
  • Not Synced
    The primary victims
  • Not Synced
    of all civil wars:
  • Not Synced
    women and children.
  • Not Synced
On my first day in office,
  • Not Synced
    I was excited ...
  • Not Synced
    and I was exhausted.
  • Not Synced
It had been a very long climb
  • Not Synced
    to where I was.
  • Not Synced
Women had been those who suffered
    most in our civil conflict,
  • Not Synced
and women had been the ones to resolve it.
  • Not Synced
    Our history records many women
    of strength and action.
  • Not Synced
A president of the United Nations'
    General Assembly,
  • Not Synced
    a renowned circuit court judge,
  • Not Synced
a president of the University of Liberia.
  • Not Synced
I knew that I had to form
    a very strong team
  • Not Synced
    with the capacity to address
  • Not Synced
    the challenges of our nation.
  • Not Synced
And I wanted to put women
    in all top postions.
  • Not Synced
But I knew that was not possible.
  • Not Synced
And so I settled for putting them
    in strategic positions.
  • Not Synced
I recruited a very able economist
    from the world bank
  • Not Synced
to be our minister of finance,
  • Not Synced
    to lead our debt-relief effort.
  • Not Synced
    Another to be the minister
    of foreign affairs,
  • Not Synced
    to reactivate our bilateral
    and multilateral relationships.
  • Not Synced
The first woman chief of police
  • Not Synced
to address the fears of our women
    who had suffered so much
  • Not Synced
    during the civil war.
  • Not Synced
Another to the best minister of gender,
  • Not Synced
to be able to ensure the protection
    and the participation of women.
  • Not Synced
    Over time,
  • Not Synced
    the minister of justice,
  • Not Synced
    the minister of public works,
  • Not Synced
    the minister of agriculture,
  • Not Synced
the minister of commerce and industry.
  • Not Synced
    Participation and leadership
    was unprecedented in my administration.
  • Not Synced
And although I knew that there were not
    enough women with the experience
  • Not Synced
    to form an all-women cabinet,
  • Not Synced
    as I wanted,
  • Not Synced
    I settled to a point --
  • Not Synced
    numerous women in junior
    administerial positons.
  • Not Synced
    As executives, as administrators,
  • Not Synced
    in local government,
  • Not Synced
    in diplomatic service,
  • Not Synced
    in the judiciary,
  • Not Synced
    in public institutions.
  • Not Synced
    It worked.
  • Not Synced
    At the end of 2012,
  • Not Synced
    our economic growth had peaked
  • Not Synced
    at nine percent.
  • Not Synced
    Our infrastructure were being
reconstructed at a very fast pace.
  • Not Synced
    Our institutions were functioning again.
  • Not Synced
    Our debt --
  • Not Synced
    of 4.9 billion --
  • Not Synced
    had been largely cancelled.
  • Not Synced
    We had good relationships
with the international money tariff fund,
  • Not Synced
    the world bank,
  • Not Synced
    the African development bank.
  • Not Synced
We also had good working relationships
with all our sister African countries
  • Not Synced
and many nations all over the world.
  • Not Synced
    Our women,
  • Not Synced
who sleep peacefully at night again
  • Not Synced
    without fear.
  • Not Synced
    Our children were smiling again,
  • Not Synced
as I promised them during my first
    inaugural address.
  • Not Synced
    The reputation and credibility
    of our nation,
  • Not Synced
lost in the many years of conflict,
  • Not Synced
    were restored.
  • Not Synced
    But progress is never guaranteed.
  • Not Synced
And in our legislature in my first term,
  • Not Synced
    women were 14 percent.
  • Not Synced
    In second term, it declined
    to eight percent
  • Not Synced
    because the environment
    was increasingly toxic.
  • Not Synced
    I had my fair shares
    of criticism and toxicity.
  • Not Synced
    Nobody is perfect.
  • Not Synced
    But there's nothing more predictable
  • Not Synced
    than a strong woman
  • Not Synced
    who wants to change things,
  • Not Synced
    who's brave to speak out,
  • Not Synced
    who's bold in action.
  • Not Synced
But I'm OK with the criticism.
  • Not Synced
I know why I made the decisions I made,
  • Not Synced
    and I'm happy
  • Not Synced
    with the results.
  • Not Synced
    But that's why more women
    leaders are needed.
  • Not Synced
For there will always be those
    who will tear us down.
  • Not Synced
    Who will tear us apart
  • Not Synced
    because they want
    the status quo to remain.
  • Not Synced
    Although sub-Sahara Africa has had
    major breakthroughs
  • Not Synced
    in women leadership
    and participation,
  • Not Synced
    particularly in the legislature,
  • Not Synced
    in parliament as it's called,
  • Not Synced
    so many women --
  • Not Synced
    50 percent and over
  • Not Synced
    ... nation --
  • Not Synced
    well over 60 percent,
  • Not Synced
    the best in the world,
  • Not Synced
but we know that's not enough.
  • Not Synced
While we must be very thankful
  • Not Synced
and applaud the progress we have made,
  • Not Synced
we know that there is much
    more work to be done.
  • Not Synced
The work will have to address
    the lingering vestiges
  • Not Synced
    of structural something against women.
  • Not Synced
    In too many places,
  • Not Synced
political parties are based on patronage,
  • Not Synced
    patriarchy,
  • Not Synced
    misogyny
  • Not Synced
    that try to keep women
    from their rightful places,
  • Not Synced
    that shut them out
  • Not Synced
    from taking leadership positions.
  • Not Synced
    Too often women face,
  • Not Synced
    while the best performers,
  • Not Synced
while equal or better in competence,
  • Not Synced
    unequal pay.
  • Not Synced
And so we must continue to work
  • Not Synced
    to change things.
  • Not Synced
We must be able to change
    the stereotyping.
  • Not Synced
We must be able to ensure
    that those structural barriers
  • Not Synced
that have kept women from being
    able to have the equity
  • Not Synced
    they rightfully deserve.
  • Not Synced
And we must also work with men.
  • Not Synced
    Because increasingly,
  • Not Synced
    there is recognition
  • Not Synced
    that full gender equity
  • Not Synced
    will ensure a stronger economy,
  • Not Synced
    a more developed nation,
  • Not Synced
    a more peaceful nation.
  • Not Synced
    And that is why
  • Not Synced
    we must continue to work.
  • Not Synced
And that is why we're partners.
  • Not Synced
I will be launching a center
    for women and development --
  • Not Synced
    that will bring together --
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    women who have started
  • Not Synced
    and are committed
    to the joining of leadership.
  • Not Synced
    With women who have excelled
  • Not Synced
    and advanced in leadership together.
  • Not Synced
    Over a 10 year period,
  • Not Synced
    I strongly believe
  • Not Synced
that we will create this wave of women
  • Not Synced
    who are prepared to take,
  • Not Synced
    unabashedly,
  • Not Synced
    intentional leader and influence
    throughout society.
  • Not Synced
    This is why --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    at 81 I cannot retire.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause and cheers)
  • Not Synced
    Women are working for change
  • Not Synced
    in Africa.
  • Not Synced
    Women are working for change
  • Not Synced
    throughout the world.
  • Not Synced
I will be with them --
  • Not Synced
    and one of them --
  • Not Synced
    forever.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Thank you for listening.
  • Not Synced
Go out and change the world.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause and cheers)
