(13) No Life Without Death | Thich Nhat Hanh, (Upper Hamlet, Plum Village, France)

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    [French] "La question, c'est
  • 0:02 - 0:05
y a-t-il une vie après la mort?"
  • 0:05 - 0:08
Question: "Is there life after death?"
  • 0:08 - 0:11
    "Life is always with death,
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    you cannot be
  • 0:13 - 0:14
    by yourself alone
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    you have to inter-be with
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    the other side.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
It's like the left and the right
  • 0:24 - 0:26
if the right is not there,
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    the left cannot be.
  • 0:29 - 0:32
And that is what in Buddhism we call
  • 0:32 - 0:33
    "inter-being" -
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    "inter-être" [French].
  • 0:35 - 0:38
So that is true with good and evil,
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    before and after,
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    here and there,
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    you and I.
  • 0:44 - 0:46
[There is no] happiness without suffering
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    there's no life without death.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    Many cells die
  • 0:53 - 0:55
every moment of our daily life,
  • 0:56 - 0:58
you can already see birth and death
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    happening in the present moment.
  • 1:02 - 1:05
And because of the dying of cells
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    the birth of cells
  • 1:07 - 1:08
    is possible.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
Don't think you were only born in that moment --
  • 1:12 - 1:14
that moment written in your birth certificate
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    is just one moment.
  • 1:17 - 1:21
What you call birth and death are only transformations
  • 1:22 - 1:23
and when you touch the continuation,
  • 1:24 - 1:26
the nature of no birth and no death
  • 1:26 - 1:28
you are no longer afraid of
  • 1:29 - 1:30
    dying.
