Wisdom Of Youth - Alan Watts
-
0:16 - 0:19All energies of life
have in them -
0:19 - 0:23a possibility of an excess,
of going too far. -
0:23 - 0:27When you bring up your children,
you tell your children -
0:27 - 0:31your various far-out ideas and
the children suddenly believe in them. -
0:31 - 0:35I'm horrified! Oh, my god,
what will they do next? -
0:38 - 0:40But everybody
feels that way -
0:40 - 0:45in regard to the strength of
the younger generation that is coming on. -
0:45 - 0:48'Cause this younger generation is
[garbled speech] -
0:48 - 0:53When we think about young people,
we have terrible ideas. -
0:53 - 0:57We think that we know what life is,
and that they have to be told -
0:57 - 1:01And that they will learn it from us,
and be like us. -
1:01 - 1:03We don't take
that attitude when -
1:03 - 1:06we see the new vegetables
come up in the spring. -
1:06 - 1:10We don't say the vegetables
have to be educated to be vegetables. -
1:10 - 1:13We say, 'hooray, at last,
young vegetables -
1:13 - 1:17with all the life and energy in them,
new meals, for everything.' -
1:17 - 1:21So, when we see young people
come up, we might say, 'good gracious. -
1:21 - 1:25Isn't this great to see the human race
is still doing its stuff? -
1:25 - 1:27I wonder what
they'll have to teach us.' -
1:27 - 1:31Because wisdom doesn't come
from above down. -
1:31 - 1:35It comes from below up.
That's where the wisdom is. -
1:35 - 1:37Surging into us.
-
1:37 - 1:40The old people,
they have a function. -
1:40 - 1:46But in order to fulfill that function
they have to understand first... -
1:48 - 1:53that... they can learn
from the young sources. -
1:53 - 1:58If they understand that,
then they can be wise, and be teachers. -
1:58 - 2:01If they don't understand that,
they never can. -
2:01 - 2:04To be wise you have to-
that's the meaning of the saying -
2:04 - 2:09"To enter the kingdom of heaven,
you have to become again as a child." -
2:09 - 2:12From the child's point of view,
the things which the adult -
2:12 - 2:17considers irrelevant to survival
are perfectly important. -
2:19 - 2:22And so children collect pebbles
and colored glass -
2:22 - 2:28and all sorts of trivia which they
consider as precious as diamonds. -
2:28 - 2:31The adults say, oh pff!
Frippery. -
2:32 - 2:35But they really
have the secret. -
2:36 - 2:40Now the child,
as child... -
2:42 - 2:45doesn't know how to play
the adult's game - it is a power game. -
2:47 - 2:52And so has to be educated to learn
the values of the power game -
2:52 - 2:56to learn what's what
and what is important. -
2:56 - 3:00But when he has mastered that game
he realizes it has no rewards; -
3:02 - 3:06that all the things that the adults
thought that they were -
3:06 - 3:09gaining by their power game
-
3:09 - 3:11are, after all, not worth having.
-
3:11 - 3:13That's why you can be
rich and miserable. -
3:15 - 3:19So that having learned,
and having seen through -
3:19 - 3:23the adult power game,
you come back to the point of a child.
