WIKITONGUES: Varney and Omoru speaking Vai

  • 0:00 - 0:03
First of all, my name is Varney Kamara
  • 0:03 - 0:05
I was born in Wonde, but before then
  • 0:05 - 0:08
    our grandparents were warriors
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    from Sierra Leone
  • 0:10 - 0:13
They came and settled here generations ago
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    They came and settled here
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    they bore us
  • 0:16 - 0:17
and Wonde has become our home
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    This country is divided
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    into plenty of different groups
  • 0:23 - 0:24
When the Peace Corps came here
  • 0:24 - 0:26
they were learning our Vai language
  • 0:26 - 0:29
and during their time here they helped us
  • 0:29 - 0:32
make plenty of books, like this one here
  • 0:32 - 0:35
to show and spread our language and script
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    We thank God
  • 0:37 - 0:39
that after they copied this paper
  • 0:39 - 0:41
some of them were very interested
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    in learning the Vai script
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    They provided us these books
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    and they really showed us
  • 0:47 - 0:49
that they were interested in it
  • 0:49 - 0:51
and we were interacting very much
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    in the language
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    not just small greetings
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    not only
  • 0:56 - 0:59
"hello, hello, how are you feeling?"
  • 0:59 - 1:03
but deep conversations in the Vai language
  • 1:05 - 1:07
The very first example about this book is
  • 1:07 - 1:10
that you can't find another language in it
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    You can't find different tribes
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    or languages in it
  • 1:15 - 1:18
You can only get Vai completely
  • 1:18 - 1:21
Really, we are appealing to the government
  • 1:21 - 1:24
to focus on and promote this language
  • 1:24 - 1:26
to be used as a general language
  • 1:26 - 1:27
    for Liberia
  • 1:27 - 1:29
because we have two or more examples
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    Like, for instance
  • 1:31 - 1:33
they will say the Vai hat
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    they get the Vai shirt
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    they get the Vai book
  • 1:36 - 1:37
but among many of the tribes
  • 1:37 - 1:40
they will not say "this is a Kpelle hat"
  • 1:40 - 1:45
    "this is a Kpelle shirt"
  • 1:48 - 1:51
Even though Kpelle has a script
  • 1:51 - 1:55
    they have many other languages
  • 1:55 - 1:56
    mixed inside
  • 1:58 - 2:01
Really, we are asking our government
  • 2:01 - 2:06
    to use this language
  • 2:06 - 2:11
as a general language in the country
  • 2:13 - 2:15
We want them to focus on the Vai script
  • 2:15 - 2:18
to really be one of the general languages
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    for Liberia
  • 2:21 - 2:25
There was a time when the white people
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    came into this country
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    from different countries
  • 2:30 - 2:35
and they opened schools for Vai books
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    People were there teaching
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    they were learning it
  • 2:40 - 2:42
and some of them became graduates
  • 2:42 - 2:44
    for the Vai books
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    So we are really appealing
  • 2:46 - 2:48
to the government to find reason
  • 2:48 - 2:50
to at least get the book moving
  • 2:50 - 2:52
to find people to promote it and teach it
  • 2:52 - 2:55
So far so good, so let me stop
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    So far
  • 2:59 - 3:01
the old man has said almost everything
  • 3:01 - 3:03
but to buttress him, thank God that
  • 3:03 - 3:06
at least one time the Peace Corps workers
  • 3:06 - 3:08
were here, that they were fine
  • 3:08 - 3:11
and interested with the Vai script
  • 3:11 - 3:13
and we were interacting in Vai
  • 3:13 - 3:16
    and it was great
  • 3:16 - 3:22
that they were doing so much
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    Although they were here earlier
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    working on this project
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    we want to continue it
  • 3:31 - 3:35
and continue appealing to the government
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    for Vai books
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    Also, even the Peace Corps
  • 3:43 - 3:46
    and foreign governments
  • 3:46 - 3:49
We would like anyone to help promote
  • 3:49 - 3:53
    this language and script
  • 3:54 - 3:58
We are also asking the outside world
  • 3:58 - 4:01
    to give us assistance
  • 4:01 - 4:05
because once we ask you and you agree
  • 4:05 - 4:12
    we will not be disappointed
  • 4:16 - 4:22
If you agree today you will not feel bad
  • 4:22 - 4:28
tomorrow about helping our language spread
  • 4:29 - 4:32
    So the international community
  • 4:32 - 4:34
    presidents, leaders
  • 4:34 - 4:38
please help us so that this book
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    will not die down
  • 4:40 - 4:44
and we can help promote the Vai script
  • 4:45 - 4:50
    Thank you
