What I Learned While Making a Movie About Happiness: Roko Belic at TEDxClaremontColleges
-
Not SyncedThis is a great opportunity to share with you
-
Not Syncedsomebody's experiences and some other things I learn
-
Not Syncedwhile making a film exploring the true causes of happiness.
-
Not SyncedThe project started when a friend of mine called me on the phone
-
Not Syncedand he said he read an article that morning
-
Not Syncedin the New York Times about happiness
-
Not Syncedand essentially the article said
-
Not Syncedwe're very rich country but not a very happy country.
-
Not SyncedWe're number 23 on the list
-
Not Syncedno matter we have lots of money
-
Not Syncedand this friend of mine..his name is Tom Shadiac
-
Not Syncedhe is a guy in the right
-
Not Syncedhe has make literally tens of millions of dollars
-
Not Synceddirecting huge blockbuster Hollywood films
-
Not Syncedlike the naughty professor, Bruce Almighty, liar liar, patch atoms
-
Not SyncedHe said," Look, I know what its like to have a lot of money
-
Not Syncedand I hang up with people who are more wealthy than me
-
Not Syncedwho are more talented, more successful
-
Not Syncedbetter looking...and many of them are not happy.
-
Not SyncedAnd in fact the people who sweep the floor in my house
-
Not Syncedand who tend the garden on my estate
-
Not Syncedoften have more a genuine smile on their faces
-
Not Syncedthan the millionares
-
Not Syncedthat I work with everyday in Hollywood.
-
Not SyncedI said" I know what does us make happy
-
Not SyncedI wanna know what does
-
Not Syncedso he suggested that we make a documentary film exploring happiness
-
Not Syncedhe said ," Look, I am not the documentary and you are."
-
Not SyncedWhat do you think?
-
Not SyncedIt sounds great. And he said," I'll happy pay for it."
-
Not SyncedWhat do you think about exploring happiness. Sounds it amazing.
-
Not SyncedI immediately got online and discovered a couple interesting things.
-
Not SyncedOne is that there's new science exploring happiness called positive psychology
-
Not Syncedwhich some people would heard of by now
-
Not SyncedIts the first time really
-
Not Syncedthat the western science has looked
-
Not Syncedvery acutely at the idea of human flourishing.
-
Not SyncedFor thousand of years we've studied what happened to people
-
Not Syncedwho are having problems
-
Not Syncedto mental illness and pathology
-
Not SyncedBut only recently do we study the other side of the spectrum.
-
Not SyncedAnd one of the exciting things that I learn kind of immediately
-
Not Syncedis that happiness is good for you.
-
Not SyncedYour immune system gets boosted
-
Not SyncedYou are more creative
-
Not SyncedYou have better relationships
-
Not SyncedYou are healthier and
-
Not Syncedyou even live longer.
-
Not SyncedAnd when I though of living long
-
Not SyncedI was trying think who we'll gonna put
-
Not Syncedin our movie beside the scientist
-
Not SyncedI did not wanna make a movie of people talking about happiness
-
Not SyncedI thought that it will really boring
-
Not SyncedSo I knew I wanted to find people who storage of life
-
Not Syncedcould illustrate this scientific concept
-
Not Syncedand I remember being a child
-
Not Syncedand I love the guinness book of records
-
Not SyncedThere was often the oldest person in the world
-
Not Syncedcame from Japan.
-
Not SyncedAnd specifically from an island in the south called Okinawa.
-
Not SyncedAnd I remember that and I though
-
Not SyncedOk, if happy people get to become old
-
Not Syncedmaybe a lot of this elderly people in Okinawa are happy.
-
Not SyncedAnd at that the time we couldn't find any research on it
-
Not SyncedBut because my producing partner is Japanese
-
Not SyncedHe said,"Look, I 'll get excuse to see my Mom
-
Not Syncedwhy don't we go and check it out.
-
Not SyncedSo we went to Okinawa to find out
-
Not SyncedAn absolutely beautiful place
-
Not SyncedAnd the firt stop was at the community center.
-
Not SyncedAnd what we discovered among other things
-
Not Syncedis that its easy in Okinawa to feel tall.
-
Not SyncedThat's me and my film maker friends in the back row
-
Not SyncedClass picture I was never in the back row
-
Not SyncedThe other thing we learn is that this tradition of meeting
-
Not Syncedin the community center has gone on for probably thousand of years
-
Not SyncedIt looks like a modern building now
-
Not SyncedBut they've been doing this
-
Not Syncedsince it was grasp up with palm leaves on the roof.
-
Not SyncedAnd what I saw was crazy
-
Not SyncedThis people in their mid nineties
-
Not Syncedsome were in the mid eighties
-
Not Syncedbut they were laughing and making jokes with each other
-
Not Syncedand they were blasting a boom box
-
Not SyncedIt's a traditional Okinawan music
-
Not SyncedBut it was blasting just like any teenager bedroom would be on the weekend
-
Not Syncedand I sort of don't like buying souvenirs when I travel
-
Not Syncedcause the world has enough crap in it
-
Not Syncedand it just feels like a waste sometimes
-
Not Syncedbut I saw this women dancing
-
Not Syncedonce they gets up and do this hula dance
-
Not Syncedand I though," I wanna take that back,"
-
Not SyncedI wanna learn one of this dance steps
-
Not Syncedits kind of paying attention to one
-
Not SyncedI was trying to figure out
-
Not Syncedand then I looked at the other woman
-
Not Syncedand she was doing a different steps
-
Not SyncedIt looks similar but different
-
Not SyncedI couldn't figure out
-
Not Syncedso finally I said
-
Not SyncedHey, would you please teach me this dance step
-
Not SyncedAnd the woman laugh and she said
-
Not SyncedOh, we don't have a traditional dance step
-
Not Syncedin Okinawa you can do whatever you want.
-
Not SyncedNow, I have been to.. I've been extremely lucky
-
Not SyncedI've been about fifty different countries in the world
-
Not SyncedAnd I have never discovered that a traditional dance step is freestyle
-
Not SyncedBut in Okinawa it is
-
Not SyncedMy producing partner Eji in the middle
-
Not SyncedHe had a great idea, he said
-
Not SyncedLet's see what a hundreds years old person looks like
-
Not Syncedwhen they two or three years old.
-
Not SyncedWhere we'll be able to see the seed of a long
-
Not Syncedand happy life at that early stage
-
Not SyncedSo we went to a pre school
-
Not SyncedAnd the teacher apologized, she said," I am so sorry,"
-
Not SyncedBut today is one day every couple of weeks
-
Not Syncedwe'll gonna spend outside of the class room.
-
Not SyncedWe'll gonna have a foot race through town.
-
Not SyncedSo we followed this fifty kids or so
-
Not SyncedThey started the race and we noticed that at the other..
-
Not Syncedat the end of the block
-
Not Syncedthere was a group of grand mothers converging.
-
Not SyncedAnd the grand mothers were there
-
Not Syncedas every kids crossed the finished lined the grand mothers hugging them,
-
Not Syncedthey were clapping, they were cheering them on
-
Not Syncedand if somebody's falling they skin their knee
-
Not SyncedThey'll be there to nurture them
-
Not Syncedand it was a beautiful scene
-
Not Syncedand I went to first grand mother just to make a small talk
-
Not Syncedand I said," Hey congratulations on having such a speedy grand child."
-
Not Syncedand she looked at the kid who I was referring to and she said
-
Not SyncedOh, that's not my grand child
-
Not SyncedShe kind of looked at me up and down and she said
-
Not SyncedMy grand children are older than you.
-
Not SyncedAnd so I looked at her friends, about fifty grand mothers there
-
Not SyncedWhose grand child is that?
