5 Tips to Go Near Zero Waste

  • 0:00 - 0:03
Today is day 19 of wearing every
  • 0:03 - 0:05
single piece of trash I create.
  • 0:05 - 0:07
And I'm up to 58 pounds
  • 0:07 - 0:08
    of trash.
  • 0:09 - 0:10
What that means is I'm creating
  • 0:10 - 0:12
about 3 pounds of trash per day.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
And this might seem like a lot.
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    But in reality, I'm creating
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    about 33% less trash
  • 0:17 - 0:18
    than the average American
  • 0:18 - 0:21
that creates 4.5 pounds per day.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    So this might seem overwhelming
  • 0:24 - 0:25
    to anybody that's interested
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    in creating less trash
  • 0:27 - 0:28
that doesn't want to be a
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    "Trash Man" like me
  • 0:30 - 0:31
which is what everybody has been
  • 0:31 - 0:33
calling me or a "Trash Monster".
  • 0:33 - 0:34
But the good news is there's
  • 0:34 - 0:35
a lot that you can do.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
and it starts with small things.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
So the first and one of
  • 0:40 - 0:41
    the most simple
  • 0:41 - 0:42
    is to ditch plastic
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    and paper bags at the
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    grocery store or wherever
  • 0:45 - 0:46
    you're shopping.
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    Instead you can get
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    a reusable bag.
  • 0:49 - 0:50
This is one of my favorites.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
I've had this for 4 years.
  • 0:52 - 0:53
It's called a "Chico Bag" and
  • 0:53 - 0:55
it fits into this tiny pocket.
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    So it's easy to bring
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    anywhere you go.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
    Instead of paper towels, napkins
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    and tissues, whether you're
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    at home or at restaurants.
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    Instead, you can just
  • 1:06 - 1:07
    use reusable cloths.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
They don't have to be anything
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    fancy at all.
  • 1:10 - 1:11
    These have existed for
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    hundreds of years and they
  • 1:13 - 1:14
can save you a ton of money.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    It's really convenient and easy
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    to get disposable cups when
  • 1:18 - 1:19
you're getting your coffee or tea
  • 1:19 - 1:20
    or something like that.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
It's really easy to just bring
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    your own cup or mug.
  • 1:24 - 1:26
Or even a mason jar, wherever
  • 1:26 - 1:28
you're going to get a drink.
  • 1:28 - 1:29
And doing that, means no more
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    cups to the landfill.
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    Whether its styrofoam, plastic
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    or paper dishes,
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    plastic forks and spoons,
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    or to-go containers.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
You can get rid of all of that,
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    simply by carrying your own
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    dishes and your own utensils.
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    You can use this for
  • 1:43 - 1:45
sitting down to eat or for
  • 1:45 - 1:47
using it for food on the go.
  • 1:47 - 1:48
    And lastly, you can
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    ditch the bottled water.
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    This will keep thousands
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    of plastic bottles from
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    ever needing to be made.
  • 1:54 - 1:55
And save you a ton of money.
  • 1:55 - 1:56
    Instead, just bring your
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    own reusable bottle, wherever
  • 1:58 - 2:00
you go and fill it up at home
  • 2:00 - 2:01
    or when you're out.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
So those are 5 things that
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    we can all start today.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
The good news is that none of
  • 2:06 - 2:07
them mean that you have to
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    go out and buy anything.
  • 2:08 - 2:09
    You can just use materials
  • 2:09 - 2:10
    that you find.
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    They all will save you
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    a ton of money and
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    they'll decrease the amount
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    of trash that you're creating.
  • 2:15 - 2:16
Start with just 1 of them,
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    if it seems overwhelming
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    and once you have success
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    with that, you can continue
  • 2:20 - 2:21
    on to the rest.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    Trash Me
