Wearing nothing new

  • 0:00 - 0:03
I'm Jessi, and this is my suitcase.
  • 0:03 - 0:06
But before I show you what I've got inside,
  • 0:06 - 0:09
I'm going to make a very public confession,
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    and that is,
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    I'm outfit-obsessed.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    I love finding, wearing,
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    and more recently,
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    photographing and blogging
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    a different, colorful, crazy outfit
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    for every single occasion.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
But I don't buy anything new.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
I get all my clothes secondhand
  • 0:28 - 0:31
from flea markets and thrift stores.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    Aww, thank you.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    Secondhand shopping
  • 0:36 - 0:38
allows me to reduce the impact
  • 0:38 - 0:40
my wardrobe has on the environment
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    and on my wallet.
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    I get to meet all kinds of great people;
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    my dollars usually go to a good cause;
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    I look pretty unique;
  • 0:49 - 0:52
and it makes shopping like my own personal treasure hunt.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
I mean, what am I going to find today?
  • 0:54 - 0:56
Is it going to be my size?
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    Will I like the color?
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    Will it be under $20?
  • 1:01 - 1:03
If all the answers are yes,
  • 1:03 - 1:05
I feel as though I've won.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
I want to get back to my suitcase
  • 1:08 - 1:10
and tell you what I packed
  • 1:10 - 1:12
for this exciting week here at TED.
  • 1:12 - 1:16
I mean, what does somebody with all these outfits bring with her?
  • 1:16 - 1:19
So I'm going to show you exactly what I brought.
  • 1:19 - 1:22
I brought seven pairs of underpants
  • 1:22 - 1:25
    and that's it.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
Exactly one week's worth of undies
  • 1:28 - 1:30
is all I put in my suitcase.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
I was betting that I'd be able to find
  • 1:33 - 1:35
everything else I could possible want to wear
  • 1:35 - 1:38
once I got here to Palm Springs.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
And since you don't know me
  • 1:40 - 1:42
as the woman walking around TED in her underwear --
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    (Laughter)
  • 1:44 - 1:46
that means I found a few things.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
And I'd really love to show you my week's worth of outfits right now.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    Does that sound good?
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    (Applause)
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    So as I do this,
  • 1:55 - 1:58
I'm also going to tell you a few of the life lessons
  • 1:58 - 2:00
that, believe it or not, I have picked up
  • 2:00 - 2:03
in these adventures wearing nothing new.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    So let's start with Sunday.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    I call this "Shiny Tiger."
  • 2:07 - 2:11
You do not have to spend a lot of money to look great.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
You can almost always look phenomenal for under $50.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
This whole outfit, including the jacket,
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    cost me $55,
  • 2:18 - 2:20
and it was the most expensive thing
  • 2:20 - 2:22
that I wore the entire week.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    Monday: Color is powerful.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    It is almost physiologically impossible
  • 2:28 - 2:31
to be in a bad mood when you're wearing bright red pants.
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    (Laughter)
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    If you are happy,
  • 2:36 - 2:39
you are going to attract other happy people to you.
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    Tuesday:
  • 2:41 - 2:44
    Fitting in is way overrated.
  • 2:44 - 2:46
I've spent a whole lot of my life
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    trying to be myself
  • 2:48 - 2:50
and at the same time fit in.
  • 2:50 - 2:52
    Just be who you are.
  • 2:52 - 2:55
If you are surrounding yourself with the right people,
  • 2:55 - 2:57
they will not only get it,
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    they will appreciate it.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    Wednesday:
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    Embrace your inner child.
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    Sometimes people tell me
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    that I look like I'm playing dress-up,
  • 3:07 - 3:11
or that I remind them of their seven-year-old.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    I like to smile
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    and say, "Thank you."
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    Thursday:
  • 3:17 - 3:19
    Confidence is key.
  • 3:19 - 3:21
If you think you look good in something,
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    you almost certainly do.
  • 3:23 - 3:25
And if you don't think you look good in something,
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    you're also probably right.
  • 3:27 - 3:31
I grew up with a mom who taught me this day-in and day-out.
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    But it wasn't until I turned 30
  • 3:33 - 3:35
that I really got what this meant.
  • 3:35 - 3:38
And I'm going to break it down for you for just a second.
  • 3:38 - 3:41
If you believe you're a beautiful person
  • 3:41 - 3:44
    inside and out,
  • 3:44 - 3:47
there is no look that you can't pull off.
  • 3:47 - 3:49
So there is no excuse for any of us here in this audience.
  • 3:49 - 3:52
We should be able to rock anything we want to rock.
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    Thank you.
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    (Applause)
  • 3:57 - 4:00
Friday: A universal truth -- five words for you:
  • 4:00 - 4:05
    Gold sequins go with everything.
  • 4:05 - 4:08
    And finally, Saturday:
  • 4:08 - 4:10
Developing your own unique personal style
  • 4:10 - 4:13
is a really great way to tell the world something about you
  • 4:13 - 4:15
without having to say a word.
  • 4:15 - 4:17
It's been proven to me time and time again
  • 4:17 - 4:19
as people have walked up to me this week
  • 4:19 - 4:21
simply because of what I'm wearing,
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    and we've had great conversations.
  • 4:23 - 4:25
So obviously this is not all going to fit
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    back in my tiny suitcase.
  • 4:27 - 4:29
So before I go home to Brooklyn,
  • 4:29 - 4:31
I'm going to donate everything back.
  • 4:31 - 4:34
Because the lesson I'm trying to learn myself this week
  • 4:34 - 4:37
is that it's okay to let go.
  • 4:37 - 4:39
I don't need to get emotionally attached to these things
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    because around the corner,
  • 4:41 - 4:43
there is always going to be
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    another crazy, colorful,
  • 4:45 - 4:47
    shiny outfit
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    just waiting for me,
  • 4:49 - 4:51
if I put a little love in my heart and look.
  • 4:51 - 4:53
    Thank you very much.
  • 4:53 - 4:56
    (Applause)
  • 4:56 - 4:58
    Thank you.
  • 4:58 - 5:03
    (Applause)
