Wearing nothing new
-
0:00 - 0:03I'm Jessi, and this is my suitcase.
-
0:03 - 0:06But before I show you what I've got inside,
-
0:06 - 0:09I'm going to make a very public confession,
-
0:09 - 0:11and that is,
-
0:11 - 0:13I'm outfit-obsessed.
-
0:13 - 0:15I love finding, wearing,
-
0:15 - 0:17and more recently,
-
0:17 - 0:19photographing and blogging
-
0:19 - 0:21a different, colorful, crazy outfit
-
0:21 - 0:24for every single occasion.
-
0:24 - 0:26But I don't buy anything new.
-
0:26 - 0:28I get all my clothes secondhand
-
0:28 - 0:31from flea markets and thrift stores.
-
0:31 - 0:33Aww, thank you.
-
0:34 - 0:36Secondhand shopping
-
0:36 - 0:38allows me to reduce the impact
-
0:38 - 0:40my wardrobe has on the environment
-
0:40 - 0:42and on my wallet.
-
0:42 - 0:44I get to meet all kinds of great people;
-
0:44 - 0:47my dollars usually go to a good cause;
-
0:47 - 0:49I look pretty unique;
-
0:49 - 0:52and it makes shopping like my own personal treasure hunt.
-
0:52 - 0:54I mean, what am I going to find today?
-
0:54 - 0:56Is it going to be my size?
-
0:56 - 0:58Will I like the color?
-
0:58 - 1:01Will it be under $20?
-
1:01 - 1:03If all the answers are yes,
-
1:03 - 1:05I feel as though I've won.
-
1:05 - 1:08I want to get back to my suitcase
-
1:08 - 1:10and tell you what I packed
-
1:10 - 1:12for this exciting week here at TED.
-
1:12 - 1:16I mean, what does somebody with all these outfits bring with her?
-
1:16 - 1:19So I'm going to show you exactly what I brought.
-
1:19 - 1:22I brought seven pairs of underpants
-
1:22 - 1:25and that's it.
-
1:25 - 1:28Exactly one week's worth of undies
-
1:28 - 1:30is all I put in my suitcase.
-
1:30 - 1:33I was betting that I'd be able to find
-
1:33 - 1:35everything else I could possible want to wear
-
1:35 - 1:38once I got here to Palm Springs.
-
1:38 - 1:40And since you don't know me
-
1:40 - 1:42as the woman walking around TED in her underwear --
-
1:42 - 1:44(Laughter)
-
1:44 - 1:46that means I found a few things.
-
1:46 - 1:49And I'd really love to show you my week's worth of outfits right now.
-
1:49 - 1:51Does that sound good?
-
1:51 - 1:53(Applause)
-
1:53 - 1:55So as I do this,
-
1:55 - 1:58I'm also going to tell you a few of the life lessons
-
1:58 - 2:00that, believe it or not, I have picked up
-
2:00 - 2:03in these adventures wearing nothing new.
-
2:03 - 2:05So let's start with Sunday.
-
2:05 - 2:07I call this "Shiny Tiger."
-
2:07 - 2:11You do not have to spend a lot of money to look great.
-
2:11 - 2:14You can almost always look phenomenal for under $50.
-
2:14 - 2:16This whole outfit, including the jacket,
-
2:16 - 2:18cost me $55,
-
2:18 - 2:20and it was the most expensive thing
-
2:20 - 2:22that I wore the entire week.
-
2:22 - 2:25Monday: Color is powerful.
-
2:25 - 2:28It is almost physiologically impossible
-
2:28 - 2:31to be in a bad mood when you're wearing bright red pants.
-
2:31 - 2:33(Laughter)
-
2:33 - 2:36If you are happy,
-
2:36 - 2:39you are going to attract other happy people to you.
-
2:39 - 2:41Tuesday:
-
2:41 - 2:44Fitting in is way overrated.
-
2:44 - 2:46I've spent a whole lot of my life
-
2:46 - 2:48trying to be myself
-
2:48 - 2:50and at the same time fit in.
-
2:50 - 2:52Just be who you are.
-
2:52 - 2:55If you are surrounding yourself with the right people,
-
2:55 - 2:57they will not only get it,
-
2:57 - 2:59they will appreciate it.
-
2:59 - 3:01Wednesday:
-
3:01 - 3:03Embrace your inner child.
-
3:03 - 3:05Sometimes people tell me
-
3:05 - 3:07that I look like I'm playing dress-up,
-
3:07 - 3:11or that I remind them of their seven-year-old.
-
3:11 - 3:13I like to smile
-
3:13 - 3:15and say, "Thank you."
-
3:15 - 3:17Thursday:
-
3:17 - 3:19Confidence is key.
-
3:19 - 3:21If you think you look good in something,
-
3:21 - 3:23you almost certainly do.
-
3:23 - 3:25And if you don't think you look good in something,
-
3:25 - 3:27you're also probably right.
-
3:27 - 3:31I grew up with a mom who taught me this day-in and day-out.
-
3:31 - 3:33But it wasn't until I turned 30
-
3:33 - 3:35that I really got what this meant.
-
3:35 - 3:38And I'm going to break it down for you for just a second.
-
3:38 - 3:41If you believe you're a beautiful person
-
3:41 - 3:44inside and out,
-
3:44 - 3:47there is no look that you can't pull off.
-
3:47 - 3:49So there is no excuse for any of us here in this audience.
-
3:49 - 3:52We should be able to rock anything we want to rock.
-
3:52 - 3:54Thank you.
-
3:54 - 3:57(Applause)
-
3:57 - 4:00Friday: A universal truth -- five words for you:
-
4:00 - 4:05Gold sequins go with everything.
-
4:05 - 4:08And finally, Saturday:
-
4:08 - 4:10Developing your own unique personal style
-
4:10 - 4:13is a really great way to tell the world something about you
-
4:13 - 4:15without having to say a word.
-
4:15 - 4:17It's been proven to me time and time again
-
4:17 - 4:19as people have walked up to me this week
-
4:19 - 4:21simply because of what I'm wearing,
-
4:21 - 4:23and we've had great conversations.
-
4:23 - 4:25So obviously this is not all going to fit
-
4:25 - 4:27back in my tiny suitcase.
-
4:27 - 4:29So before I go home to Brooklyn,
-
4:29 - 4:31I'm going to donate everything back.
-
4:31 - 4:34Because the lesson I'm trying to learn myself this week
-
4:34 - 4:37is that it's okay to let go.
-
4:37 - 4:39I don't need to get emotionally attached to these things
-
4:39 - 4:41because around the corner,
-
4:41 - 4:43there is always going to be
-
4:43 - 4:45another crazy, colorful,
-
4:45 - 4:47shiny outfit
-
4:47 - 4:49just waiting for me,
-
4:49 - 4:51if I put a little love in my heart and look.
-
4:51 - 4:53Thank you very much.
-
4:53 - 4:56(Applause)
-
4:56 - 4:58Thank you.
-
4:58 - 5:03(Applause)
