Lesson 18 - Internet - unplugged activity

  • 0:02 - 0:06
    Unplugged Activity | Internet
  • 0:06 - 0:08
    (Amy Hirotaka - Code.org)
    This activity explains,
  • 0:08 - 0:10
in a easy-to-understand way, how the internet works.
  • 0:10 - 0:14
We explain all the terminology you'll need in simple terms,
  • 0:14 - 0:18
so that students can simulate transmitting messages, like an email.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
Students will transmit messages while pretending to be
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    one of three transmission methods:
  • 0:23 - 0:26
wireless internet (WIFI), DSL or fiber-optic.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    The students who represent WIFI,
  • 0:28 - 0:31
will have to wear the message they're transmitting on their head,
  • 0:31 - 0:35
because WIFI is the most likely to drop some information.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
The students pretending to be DSL or cable
  • 0:37 - 0:40
will carry the message on the back to their hand
  • 0:40 - 0:43
where they're slightly less likely to drop information.
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    And the students representing fiber-optic
  • 0:45 - 0:47
will get to carry them with both hands.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
This activity is a great way to understand
  • 0:51 - 0:54
something that many of us use every day.
