Teaching in the time of COVID-19 #OneForAll

  • 0:13 - 0:15
    News: San Francisco unified school
    district is taking serious precautions
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    against the potential
    spread of the Corona virus.
  • 0:18 - 0:22
This morning, one public school is closed
and many more are feeling the viruses
  • 0:22 - 0:22
    impact.
  • 0:28 - 0:32
George: I live in San Francisco, which
is one of the most diverse cities in the
  • 0:32 - 0:33
    United States.
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    It's a beautiful place.
  • 0:34 - 0:39
You know, I've seen this place change
Belvoir high school where I work is
  • 0:39 - 0:46
basically a beacon for this community, and
we represent basically the demographic of
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    San Francisco.
  • 0:56 - 1:02
I'm a teacher and I love to teach, you
know, and what does it really mean?
  • 1:04 - 1:10
I have thought about that for the last 25,
    28 years I've been a teacher, and I always
  • 1:10 - 1:18
come back to just one thing, which is
to have a authentic, relationship and
  • 1:18 - 1:23
interaction with the students in this
brief period of time when they're in my
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    classroom.
  • 1:29 - 1:30
    when the governor.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    And then the district
told us not to go back.
  • 1:33 - 1:39
It was basically just leave everything and
don't come back the next week kind of a
  • 1:39 - 1:39
    thing.
  • 1:39 - 1:45
And also a lot of us basically left our
    computers, our equipment, our content,
  • 1:45 - 1:49
everything we have in the classroom,
which is our second home, you know.
  • 1:49 - 1:55
I was trying to figure out on my calendar,
when was the last time I saw my students.
  • 1:56 - 2:01
And in my mind it feels
    like it's been so, so
  • 2:16 - 2:32
    long ago.
  • 2:32 - 2:39
    Taskia: My name is Taskia.
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    I'm 11 years old.
  • 2:41 - 2:49
Aleefa: My name is Aleefa, I'm nine
years old and I like puppies and animals.
  • 2:59 - 3:04
    Because we haven't been
really thing at home for long.
  • 3:04 - 3:07
Cause most of the day we've
    been spending and at school.
  • 3:08 - 3:12
But then we come home and
it's all been a bit different.
  • 3:12 - 3:17
Taskia: I feel like I have to transform
my bedroom, which look classrooms like as
  • 3:17 - 3:19
    like a place where
    there's no distractions.
  • 3:19 - 3:23
    Aleefa: Hi, I'm Aleefa
and today I'm going to be
  • 3:27 - 3:28
    riding my bike
  • 3:29 - 3:29
    Jonathan: How are you?
  • 3:30 - 3:30
    Peter: Okay.
  • 3:30 - 3:31
    I'm doing okay.
  • 3:31 - 3:35
Yeah, it's a like everyone else, just
trying to figure out this whole thing
  • 3:35 - 3:36
    right now.
  • 3:36 - 3:37
    Jonathan: How's your homeschooling?
  • 3:38 - 3:43
Peter: Well, it's day one, so if i'm
honest is like day one or at the moment
  • 3:43 - 3:48
feels a bit like school holiday in that we
try in a school holiday, not to just like
  • 3:48 - 3:50
sit around watching Disney plus all day.
  • 3:50 - 3:53
It's more, it's trying to do something
a little constructive to keep a bit of
  • 3:53 - 3:54
    learning going on.
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    Aleefa: I miss my teacher,
    my friends, my classroom
  • 3:57 - 4:01
    theres like lots of different
    emotions swirling around.
  • 4:02 - 4:04
    There are some happy thoughts,
    and some sad thoughts.
  • 4:04 - 4:08
Taskia: It's day three of me suffering
at home and I'm trying to do these math.
  • 4:08 - 4:10
    but I'm so distracted by
    everything on my desk.
  • 4:10 - 4:11
Jonathan: What's been hardest so far?
  • 4:12 - 4:17
Peter: The designer in me Is trying to
look at everything as a design challenge,
  • 4:17 - 4:17
    right?
  • 4:17 - 4:21
So it's not looking at the world
as like, oh my god, it's all over.
  • 4:21 - 4:24
    It's like, you know how
    might we work on this?
  • 4:24 - 4:25
    How might we solve this?
  • 4:25 - 4:28
How might we find opportunities in this?
  • 4:28 - 4:33
How might we use this as times to spend
a bit more quality time as a family?
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    Katie: Hi, Mr Lee,
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    Monica: Hi Mr Lee.
  • 5:00 - 5:02
George: You guys are just like in class.
  • 5:02 - 5:04
    Exactly the same personality.
  • 5:04 - 5:05
    Gavin: Hi Mr Lee
  • 5:05 - 5:07
    George: Hi Gavin
  • 5:07 - 5:12
Being able to see my students makes me
remember who I am because I think that a
  • 5:12 - 5:15
lot of times we lose track of who we are.
  • 5:18 - 5:20
Nicole: He's going to tear up
  • 5:21 - 5:22
    Virtural hug.
  • 5:22 - 5:26
    Gavin: Cause like right now
    I'd rather be at school.
  • 5:26 - 5:29
then like staying at home every day,
  • 5:29 - 5:30
    Nicole: I actually miss it.
  • 5:31 - 5:31
    Crazy.
  • 5:32 - 5:32
    George: Yeah.
  • 5:32 - 5:37
Can I ask each one of you to just very
quickly, one thing that you guys have
  • 5:37 - 5:38
    hopeful for?
  • 5:38 - 5:40
Gavin: I think for me, I'm hopeful
  • 5:40 - 5:41
    for graduation.
  • 5:41 - 5:45
Just like being able to like go on stage
and prove that like the 12 years is worth it.
  • 5:45 - 5:48
Johnny: It's something that all seniors
are looking for when we graduate high
  • 5:48 - 5:49
    school.
  • 5:49 - 5:51
    Monica: Being able to see
    everyone again will be cool.
  • 5:52 - 5:54
Nicole: It just, it feels so unfinished.
  • 5:54 - 5:57
I'm acturally really hopeful for college.
  • 5:57 - 6:01
A few days ago, I acturally got accepted
by UC Berkeley, and I'm going to try to
  • 6:01 - 6:02
    become a doctor.
  • 6:08 - 6:09
    Jonathan: What's the one
    thing giving you hope?
  • 6:09 - 6:14
George: You know, I'm a perpetual hopeful
person because I'm always with young
  • 6:14 - 6:15
    people.
  • 6:15 - 6:16
    You know?
  • 6:16 - 6:17
    You guys give me hope.
  • 6:21 - 6:34
This is the one event in my lifetime where
    entire global community, our humanity,
  • 6:34 - 6:42
just earth of ours, it's been affected
equally and we're all feeling the same
  • 6:42 - 6:43
    thing.
