What is net-zero?
-
0:01 - 0:03What is net zero?
-
0:03 - 0:07We release 55 gigatons of greenhouse gases
-
0:07 - 0:08into the air every year.
-
0:08 - 0:10To stop global warming,
-
0:10 - 0:14we have to get our greenhouse
gas emissions down to zero. -
0:14 - 0:17But for every country
to immediately shut down -
0:17 - 0:19all greenhouse gas-releasing activities
-
0:19 - 0:21would be an enormous challenge,
-
0:21 - 0:23especially since some
countries have built up -
0:23 - 0:26an economic headstart
with no restrictions. -
0:26 - 0:31So, instead, we can use an
approach called net zero. -
0:31 - 0:34Net zero means that for every
molecule of greenhouse gas -
0:34 - 0:37we put into the air, we also take one out,
-
0:38 - 0:40making our net emissions zero.
-
0:40 - 0:43Net zero requires us to
make big changes today, -
0:43 - 0:45use less more efficiently,
-
0:45 - 0:48and even bigger technological
changes for the future, -
0:48 - 0:51like replacing all greenhouse
gas-emitting activities -
0:51 - 0:52with clean ones.
-
0:52 - 0:55We'll also have to capture
greenhouse gases from the air -
0:55 - 0:57and store them permanently.
-
0:58 - 1:00And yet, net zero is our best chance
-
1:00 - 1:02for a sustainable future.
