The Demographic Divide with Carl Haub

  • 0:08 - 0:10
    Carl Haub, Demographer
    and Population Reference
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    Bureau, Washington, D.C.
  • 0:12 - 0:16
    The demographic divide,
    as we call it now,
  • 0:16 - 0:20
    is something that developed in
the latter half of the past
    century,
  • 0:20 - 0:25
when population growth shifted almost completely into the
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    developing countries.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
So, today, when we look at
    population growth,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    it's taking place in Africa,
    Asia, Latin America,
  • 0:32 - 0:36
    but very little - actually,
    almost none - is taking
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    place in Europe today.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    Only the United States of
    the developed countries
  • 0:39 - 0:43
    really has significant
    population growth,
  • 0:43 - 0:45
but even that is due to
    immigration,
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    and also births to new
    residents.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    Birth to immigrants.
  • 0:50 - 0:51
In fact, here in the U.S.
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    we have our own
    population...our own
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    demographic divide.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    Between now and the middle
    of the century,
  • 0:56 - 1:00
what we used to call - and I
think still do call - the
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    majority population,
    which goes by a fairly
  • 1:02 - 1:07
    complicated moniker of
    white and non-Hispanic,
  • 1:07 - 1:08
    will not grow at all.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    This is the traditional
    European heritage
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    population of the U.S.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    It simply stopped growing.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    All the population
    growth in the U.S.
  • 1:18 - 1:23
over the next 40 or 50
    years will come from minorities.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    Groups we today call
    minorities,
  • 1:25 - 1:30
    and I doubt in 2050 that we'll
    be doing the same thing.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
In the U.S., about half of
    immigrants come from Latin
    America.
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    No surprise.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    I mean, it's a neighbor,
    and of course, many of
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    those come from Mexico.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    And their labor is needed.
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    It's needed in
    agriculture.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    It's needed in construction,
  • 1:43 - 1:46
and a lot of other manual labor.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    The other half of our
    immigration comes from,
    basically,
  • 1:49 - 1:52
Asia is one of the big sources.
  • 1:52 - 1:57
And as is almost always true
    with long-distance migrants,
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    these tend to be well-educated,
  • 1:59 - 2:03
    professional-type people -
    doctors, professors, scientists.
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    Not all, but for
    the majority.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
And yes, we still do get
    some immigrants from Europe,
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    and that stream has
    not yet stopped.
  • 2:11 - 2:15
But that is really who is
changing the face of the U.S. at
    the moment,
  • 2:15 - 2:20
    is you have agricultural
    laborers coming from the
  • 2:20 - 2:21
    nearby countries,
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    and professional people
    coming from further away.
