critique and feedback - the story of austin's butterfly - Ron Berger
-
0:03 - 0:06What would you guys say to teachers
 -
0:06 - 0:09if they are not getting high quality work?
 -
0:09 - 0:10Could they learn something from this?
 -
0:10 - 0:13Or would you say they would learn differently in the classrooms?
 -
0:13 - 0:17This is the story called Austin's Butterfly.
 -
0:17 - 0:21And it's a true story about a first grade boy, and his name is Austin.
 -
0:21 - 0:27And he goes to school, or used to go to school in a town called Boise, Idaho.
 -
0:27 - 0:33And in his class in Boise, Idaho, they were studying butterflies and he had to do a project.
 -
0:33 - 0:36His job in the first grade was to draw a butterfly.
 -
0:36 - 0:38And this is the butterfly that he picked.
 -
0:39 - 0:41Austin had to use this photograph as his model,
 -
0:41 - 0:46and he had to draw an accurate scientific drawing of this butterfly.
 -
0:46 - 0:48This is called a Tiger Swallowtail.
 -
0:48 - 0:50Student: I knew it!
 -
0:50 - 0:52Can you tell Toby why it's called tiger?
 -
0:52 - 0:56Student: Because it kinda has the stripes of a tiger right there.
 -
0:56 - 0:59Good. So, here was Austin's job.
 -
0:59 - 1:03He was supposed to do a scientific drawing of that butterfly,
 -
1:03 - 1:05but remember Austin was only in first grade.
 -
1:05 - 1:06And you know what he did?
 -
1:06 - 1:09He forgot to look like a scientist carefully.
 -
1:09 - 1:15He got his paper and he just started to draw the image of butterfly that he had in his head.
 -
1:15 - 1:19And he wasn't looking like a scientist, and so this is what he drew.
 -
1:20 - 1:23It's not bad! And it is a butterfly.
 -
1:23 - 1:24But does it look exactly like this?
 -
1:25 - 1:27Students: No...
 -
1:27 - 1:28No, it doesn't yet.
 -
1:28 - 1:31It doesn't look exactly like this yet.
 -
1:31 - 1:34Luckily, this wasn't the regular school where Austin went.
 -
1:34 - 1:38It was an expeditionary learning school just like Presumpscot School.
 -
1:38 - 1:41And so they didn't look at this and say, "Good Austin! You're done!"
 -
1:41 - 1:46They said, "Austin, good start! Now we can start giving you critiques,
 -
1:46 - 1:49so you can do a second draft and make it better."
 -
1:49 - 1:53And a third draft and make it better and you can make it much much closer to this.
 -
1:53 - 1:54And he was ready to go.
 -
1:54 - 1:58All of the first graders in his critique group sat on the floor like you guys are.
 -
1:58 - 2:01And they decided to split their advice into two kinds.
 -
2:01 - 2:05First, just the shape of the wings.
 -
2:08 - 2:11And then when the shape was right, they give him advice about pattern inside the wings.
 -
2:11 - 2:12Aulia, what would you say?
 -
2:12 - 2:14You could make it much pointier.
 -
2:14 - 2:17Good! These wings could be much pointier.
 -
2:17 - 2:18Who else would add something?
 -
2:18 - 2:19Etak, what would you say?
 -
2:19 - 2:21How about the angle?
 -
2:21 - 2:25Because, not to be mean about the angle, it's just not exact. So, uh...
 -
2:25 - 2:28Okay! Show me! Come up here, Etak!
 -
2:28 - 2:31Show me where...what you would like to ask him to do just slightly differently.
 -
2:31 - 2:33Uh, like to make it little longer?
 -
2:33 - 2:35Longer where? Draw where you would do it.
 -
2:35 - 2:36Like right there.
 -
2:36 - 2:39Okay, so pull this out longer?
 -
2:39 - 2:39Yeah.
 -
2:39 - 2:41That's very specific, Etak. Thank you.
 -
2:41 - 2:42Jemilla, what would you say?
 -
2:42 - 2:47It's like... like...a... triangle?
 -
2:47 - 2:53Good. Jemilla, I love that. So you are saying more like a triangle shape. And I agree.
 -
2:53 - 2:57Well you know what, those first graders came up with most of those same ideas.
 -
2:57 - 2:59And you know what Austin said?
 -
2:59 - 3:05He said, "Ok! I will go try. And he went back to his seat. And he drew this!"
 -
3:05 - 3:07Wow! Wow~
 -
3:07 - 3:09Does this look more like a triangle?
 -
3:09 - 3:10Yeah...yeah.
 -
3:10 - 3:12Did he go out further like what Etak was suggesting?
 -
3:12 - 3:13Yeah...yes.
 -
3:13 - 3:16Did he add some jaggedness here, (yes) like Cindy?
 -
3:16 - 3:18Did he get rid of that bottom thing?
 -
3:18 - 3:19Yes.
 -
3:19 - 3:23So he did listen to his friends and he made it better.
 -
3:23 - 3:25It's not perfect. Toby, what would you say?
 -
3:25 - 3:33I would say don't put those little tail things so pointed in, I would say put them more pointed down.
 -
3:33 - 3:35Good! Ok. Ethan, what would you say?
 -
3:35 - 3:39I think you should make the wings more like this, not like this.
 -
3:39 - 3:40Okay.
 -
3:40 - 3:44He listened to his friends, and they said this is really a lot better Austin.
 -
3:44 - 3:46That second draft really is better.
 -
3:46 - 3:48Maybe he can make a third one.
 -
3:48 - 3:51Good! Maybe he can make a third draft.
 -
3:52 - 3:53And so he did this draft.
 -
3:53 - 3:55That's his third draft.
 -
3:55 - 3:58That's his third draft. Hadley, that's just right.
 -
3:58 - 4:00Elijah, what do you notice there?
 -
4:00 - 4:08One wing is more of a pointed than the other. And that side is a little bit higher than the others.
 -
4:08 - 4:08Good.
 -
4:08 - 4:10Cobern?
 -
4:10 - 4:14Right here, it doesn't have the inside thing still.
 -
4:14 - 4:17Ah! Okay! It needs a little bit more that notch.
 -
4:17 - 4:19So, do you think maybe he should do a fourth draft?
 -
4:19 - 4:21Students: Yeah!
 -
4:21 - 4:22Well, that's just what he said.
 -
4:22 - 4:29He said, "Shoot! Okay. I got round again, I will go back and do the fourth draft."
 -
4:29 - 4:30He listened!
 -
4:30 - 4:34He listened! Does it look more even like what Elijah was suggesting?
 -
4:34 - 4:36Yes! Yeah!
 -
4:36 - 4:39And does it look like coming out a little sharper like Cindy was suggesting?
 -
4:40 - 4:44And like Etak was saying, the angle looks a little better.
 -
4:44 - 4:47So now Austin was feeling really good.
 -
4:47 - 4:49He said, " Am I ready to add some pattern?"
 -
4:49 - 4:55And they said, "Okay. Why don't you try adding some of the pattern?"
 -
4:55 - 4:57And he did!
 -
4:57 - 4:58He's good at it.
 -
4:58 - 5:00He's so good.
 -
5:00 - 5:03And then they said, "Austin, you are ready for color."
 -
5:03 - 5:07Let's look at his last draft.
 -
5:07 - 5:10And what do you think? Did it come out really good?
 -
5:10 - 5:13Students: Yeah! Yeah!
 -
5:13 - 5:16Let me show you where he started, just to give you a quick reminder.
 -
5:16 - 5:22And then, what do you think about how much progress he made?
 -
5:22 - 5:24Etak, what would you say about his progress?
 -
5:24 - 5:26He made a lot of progress.
 -
5:26 - 5:29He persevered doing it.
 -
5:29 - 5:32Um, his friends were honest with him.
 -
5:32 - 5:39What was about the kinds of advice that they gave that allowed him to get better each time?
 -
5:39 - 5:40Assahn?
 -
5:40 - 5:43Well, they told him what was wrong about it.
 -
5:43 - 5:46Did they said it was just wrong or were they more specific than that?
 -
5:46 - 5:48They were more specific, but they weren't mean about it.
 -
5:48 - 5:50Great!
 -
5:50 - 5:51Hadley.
 -
5:51 - 5:53He made six drafts.
 -
5:53 - 5:56And so is that something that other kids should learn from?
 -
5:56 - 5:57What should we learn from that?
 -
5:57 - 6:01You can make other drafts if it's not right.
 -
6:01 - 6:02Good.
 -
6:02 - 6:05So if it's not right, you can keep doing more drafts to make it better.
 -
6:05 - 6:08And you just don't use things in your head,
 -
6:08 - 6:10you want to use sharp eye.
 -
6:10 - 6:13Good! He used the eyes of a scientist.
 -
6:13 - 6:13Great.

I love the story. The kids' names are so unique and sometimes so exotic that I had to ask my friends for help. It can be difficult when a kid slurs. But, hey, they are still little. My job is do my best to comprehend and I love them.
