Tal R on Daniel Richter - Daniel Richter on Tal R
-
0:08 - 0:10We don´t inspire each other, we steal from each other.
-
0:10 - 0:10Yes.
-
0:11 - 0:13So, inspiration is...
-
0:13 - 0:16Yes, is from the world of lies, it's stealing!
-
0:16 - 0:18Tal R "Blind Date", 2009-2010
-
0:21 - 0:24Daniel Richter "Study for the amazing comeback of Dr Freud", 2005
-
0:27 - 0:31It's called "Study for the amazing comeback of Dr. Freud".
-
0:31 - 0:35The usual chronography when you watch any painting, you look at the image and then you look at the title
-
0:35 - 0:38and you look at the year, and then you have a package of three things:
-
0:38 - 0:40year, title and image.
-
0:41 - 0:43It's "Blind Date".
-
0:44 - 0:46He made a joke!
-
0:46 - 0:48He wants to confuse us.
-
0:48 - 0:51It looks like a weird nude from the back
-
0:51 - 0:53the figure is transparent as the shadow is transparent
-
0:53 - 1:02and then, on the top of this figure is this weird "moofti" or Taliban looking face.
-
1:02 - 1:09It's obviously a police man who has disguised himself as a cup of tea,
-
1:09 - 1:12and a wealthy man with a gun.
-
1:16 - 1:23It could be a kind of a woman dressed up like a man, but even the head seems like
-
1:23 - 1:25it doesn't really belong to the body.
-
1:25 - 1:31There is also humanity, and humanity is in bad shape, and endangered.
-
1:32 - 1:38A naked human body in a Taliban is something that is usually not mixed.
-
1:38 - 1:42It's about financial power versus the power of the state,
-
1:42 - 1:46and the struggle between these two evil powers.
-
1:46 - 1:49There is all this kind of "roads" into the painting,
-
1:50 - 1:54and when you leave, you probably have more questions than answers,
-
1:54 - 1:57and that's the generosity of the painting.
-
2:01 - 2:07There is always the level of, what do you call... content?, and interpretation.
-
2:07 - 2:10It looks actually like Daniel had other plans,
-
2:10 - 2:13but first he had other plans that went that direction,
-
2:13 - 2:15because a lot of the paint is running that direction.
-
2:15 - 2:20You call these "noses", the colours that dropped, and then he tried to hide them
-
2:20 - 2:22with the green and then he found out
-
2:22 - 2:25he took the wrong colour, and you will see through it anyway.
-
2:25 - 2:29And then finally, suddenly, he probably tried different directions
-
2:29 - 2:34and then in the end he did this "pavour" style painting of just drawing all over the surface.
-
2:34 - 2:41And then he just left it as an artistic decision, but honestly, it's just laziness and improvisation.
-
2:41 - 2:43It's almost like a drawing,
-
2:44 - 2:48it´s just thinly painted on the top of a lot of mess.
-
2:48 - 2:51I think it's the absolute right thing to do because
-
2:51 - 2:58it leaves place for the accident and let´s say, playfulness or intelligence of the accident.
-
2:58 - 3:01I actually like that is absolutely flat,
-
3:01 - 3:04absolutely flat, and closed,
-
3:04 - 3:08and I like this notion and way of just drawing over this flatness.
-
3:08 - 3:12At the end of the day, I think, it's always about how it's done,
-
3:12 - 3:18and the way is done also describes the view on the world.
-
3:24 - 3:26I think I feel connected.
-
3:27 - 3:30It's the work, I would say, that was...
-
3:30 - 3:32I've never seen before but immediately understand where it comes from.
-
3:33 - 3:36I think we have the share of the same interest.
-
3:36 - 3:38I think we eat from a lot of the same sources.
-
3:39 - 3:43I think when we both die, when we are nearing death,
-
3:43 - 3:45people will not be able to tear them apart anymore.
-
3:47 - 3:49It means nothing,
-
3:49 - 3:50it's just like in the library,
-
3:50 - 3:51he is with an "R" and I'm with an "R".
-
3:51 - 3:53That's why they put as together.
-
3:54 - 3:56It's all a coincidence.
- Title:
- Tal R on Daniel Richter - Daniel Richter on Tal R
- Description:
-
"We don't inspire each other, we steal from each other". See what happens when you put together two artists who are also friends, and get them to comment on each other's paintings.
Tal R (b. 1967) and Daniel Richter (b. 1962) belong to the same current in visual art. In the video they express their obvious respect for each other. Tal R admires Richter's painting style, Daniel Richter has an eye for the humorous sides of Tal R's pictures.
