10:38 - 10:49Old age coming, my girl!
-
10:49 - 11:41You've been drilling
before the recruits again. -
11:41 - 12:43Michael...

12:43 - 12:47How dare you enter?
-
12:47 - 12:51For God's sake, madam, don't!
-
12:51 - 12:57You should have asked.
I'd have picked you some. -
12:57 - 13:03You know there are patrols.
-
13:03 - 13:14When one is hungry one
doesn't care for patrols. -
13:14 - 13:26Come along!

-
16:41 - 17:15Wait!
-
17:15 - 17:19Sorry, you can't have from these.
-
17:19 - 17:25Go see the captain, then.
-
17:25 - 17:30No, wait.
-
17:30 - 17:34Obrenovitch
-
17:34 - 17:41You know stealing is forbidden...
-
17:41 - 17:46You make me punish you.
-
17:46 - 17:50Would you like to work?
-
17:50 - 17:53No, I refuse!
- Are you rebeling? -
17:53 - 17:57I can't work for my enemy.
-
17:57 - 17:58You're forgetting that you are a P.O.W.
-
17:58 - 18:02An officer, my captain.
-
18:02 - 18:12All right. Five days confinement!
-
18:12 - 18:19Nanev.
-
18:19 - 18:20Yes, Sir!
-
18:20 - 18:22Take the peaches to the hospital.
-
18:22 - 18:29Yes, Sir!
-
18:29 - 18:32Hey, you!
-
18:32 - 18:38Hold this!
-
18:38 - 18:48How could I know it would happen?
-
18:48 - 18:54Gandev, take this.
-
18:54 - 19:11Thanks, lieutenant!
I'll come back tomorrow. -
19:11 - 19:25"...There, far, far away from
home there is my village..." -
19:25 - 19:29Obrenovich!
-
19:29 - 19:33You here, my captain?
- Yes, my dear, I'm here again. -
19:33 - 19:37What happened? - I
hit somebody. - Whom? -
19:37 - 19:44I can't remember. But
my hand still hurts. -
19:44 - 19:50You had one too many?
- on the contrary... -
19:50 - 19:55Do you bring me something?
- My company for five days. -
19:55 - 20:01Not bad! It's boring
to play chess alone. -
20:01 - 20:08I don't feel like playing.
-
20:08 - 20:16Why?
- Just so... -
20:16 - 20:22Oh, I see... It's a woman, isn't it?
-
20:22 - 20:28And she let you kiss her?
- No. -
20:28 - 20:32Or gave you a smile?
-
20:32 - 20:35No...
-
20:35 - 20:40She must be beautiful!
- I shouldn't say so. -
20:40 - 20:44Then I don't understand.
-
20:44 - 20:53There!
-
20:53 - 20:59Kavarnaliev is back from Dobrudga.
-
20:59 - 21:03Being transferred to the Southern front.
-
21:03 - 21:17He's brought two boxes of sugar.
-
21:17 - 21:24I am sure he's smuggled
kerosene from Romania. -
21:24 - 21:58Smearing the uniform! Villains!
-
21:58 - 22:05Starting tomorrow you
sleep in the orchard. -
22:05 - 22:30And shoot anyone that shows up.
-
22:30 - 22:38General Hubenov has been
relieved of his post. -
22:38 - 22:51We've retreated at Yarebitchna. The
idiots will let the front break down. -
22:51 - 22:54A new requisition decree again.
-
22:54 - 22:56The government's gone crazy.
-
22:56 - 22:59What about the prisoners?
-
22:59 - 23:01What prisoners?
-
23:01 - 23:04From the camp.
-
23:04 - 23:08You haven't been to see them, have you?
-
23:08 - 23:12You know I don't go out.
-
23:12 - 23:17You needn't.
-
23:17 - 23:22It's no sight for a decent woman.
-
23:22 - 23:26They aren't humans, just...
-
23:26 - 23:28Couldn't we be more human with them?
-
23:28 - 23:32Don't talk like that.
-
23:32 - 23:35Our boys are dying at the front,
while you care here about the slaves. -
23:35 - 23:37They're hungry and tormented.
-
23:37 - 25:18They would mutiny if they weren't.
-
25:18 - 25:58Sorry!
-
25:58 - 26:05Good afternoon!
-
26:05 - 26:13I'm here again.
-
26:13 - 26:26What a moment.
-
26:26 - 26:37These boots are for
you. I hope they fit you. -
26:37 - 26:41Oh, they're fine.
-
26:41 - 26:44Are you always alone?
-
26:44 - 26:46No, my husband works downtown.
-
26:46 - 26:52I know him. He's the town commandant.
-
26:52 - 26:55Who told you?
- The soldiers. -
26:55 - 26:59Why do you hide that?
-
26:59 - 27:01He is very strict.
-
27:01 - 27:04But you are so kind!
-
27:04 - 27:10You aren't any safer for that.
-
27:10 - 27:13I would have come the very next day!
-
27:13 - 27:20Why didn't you?
- I was... how do you say it? -
27:20 - 27:21Because you ran away?
-
27:21 - 27:26Yes, for that. Yes, but
mainly because of the peaches. -
27:26 - 27:29You should've said they were a gift.
-
27:29 - 27:35And tell them from whom?
-
27:35 - 27:46Of course not!
-
27:46 - 27:57Will you give me some food?
-
27:57 - 28:22And some brandy if possible.
-
28:22 - 28:27What are you looking at?
- Veliko Tarnovo -
28:27 - 28:30I thought you loathed it.
-
28:30 - 28:35I'm admiring it despite the barbed wire.
-
28:35 - 28:38War brings hatred
-
28:38 - 28:44but the work of man
remains to incite love. -
28:44 - 28:48An absurd paradox.
-
28:48 - 28:54A sad paradox.
-
28:54 - 28:56Take this!
-
28:56 - 28:59Thank you!
-
28:59 - 29:02I don't even know your name.
-
29:02 - 29:04Elisaveta
-
29:04 - 29:07Elisaveta
-
29:07 - 29:19I beg you not to come here anymore.
-
29:19 - 29:22I see!
-
29:22 - 29:44Good-bye
-
29:44 - 29:48The chimney doesn't smoke.
-
29:48 - 29:50Auntie, Radi's painted some smoke.
-
29:50 - 29:58Wait!
-
29:58 - 30:01What's this volcano?
-
30:01 - 30:04This is the front, can't you see?
-
30:04 - 30:10Come, let's try them on.
-
30:10 - 30:41There.
-
30:41 - 30:46I can't buttoned it.
-
30:46 - 31:20Thank you.
- Come on! -
31:20 - 31:23I violated your order.
-
31:23 - 31:26You take a big risk.
-
31:26 - 31:28Tou think so.
-
31:28 - 31:32The patrols might kill you!
-
31:32 - 31:37A pity for the fine boots.
-
31:37 - 31:41Must you talk like that?
-
31:41 - 31:43You are an officer, aren't you?
-
31:43 - 31:51Let me present myself. A
teacher, trained, in uniform. -
31:51 - 31:55Three years in trenches, two in camps.
-
31:55 - 32:01What regrets could I have?
-
32:01 - 32:04Still it's thoughtless of you.
-
32:04 - 32:13What about you? Why did you come?
-
32:13 - 32:31I was afraid something
might happen to you. -
32:31 - 32:33I didn't know you had children.
-
32:33 - 32:35They're not mine.
-
32:35 - 32:37Whose are they?
-
32:37 - 32:40Orphans...
-
32:40 - 32:43Perhaps it's better that way.
-
32:43 - 32:49Forgive me! Children become
men, then are sent to be killed. -
32:49 - 32:56Or to rot behind barbed
wire which is the same. -
32:56 - 33:00You think it'll always be like this?
-
33:00 - 33:04I wonder...
-
33:04 - 33:08If it was up to me...
-
33:08 - 33:10Sorry to bother you.
-
33:10 - 33:12You're not.
-
33:12 - 33:15But I'll be coming again...
-
33:15 - 33:18Please, don't, I'll send you some food.
-
33:18 - 33:20You know why.
-
33:20 - 33:22Don't!
-
33:22 - 33:27I must see you.
-
33:27 - 33:32I can stand everything
when thinking of you. -
33:32 - 33:36Even the camp is not so horrible.
-
33:36 - 33:39You bring back my faith in life.
-
33:39 - 33:41Oh, why do you talk like that?
-
33:41 - 33:44I love you! And you know that.
-
33:44 - 33:45I must go!
-
33:45 - 33:49Stay a while, please!
-
33:49 - 33:53No... I can't.
-
33:53 - 33:57Are you really going?
-
33:57 - 34:04Yes.
-
34:04 - 38:06Good-by.
-
38:06 - 38:32Elisaveta!
-
38:32 - 38:37Where have you been?
-
38:37 - 38:39Lisa, what's wrong with you?
-
38:39 - 38:43Nothing. I went to church.
-
38:43 - 38:46Colonel!
-
38:46 - 38:57Colonel!
-
38:57 - 39:01Don't you remember me?
-
39:01 - 39:03Varenov!
-
39:03 - 39:04Petio!
-
39:04 - 39:10Peter!
-
39:10 - 39:12I didn't know that you went to the front
-
39:12 - 39:14I was in father's division.
-
39:14 - 39:16Why?
-
39:16 - 39:18At war all are equal, sir.
-
39:18 - 39:22Excuse me.
-
39:22 - 39:25Good day madam!
-
39:25 - 39:30Good day!
-
39:30 - 39:41Thank you!
-
39:41 - 39:45May I report, here?
-
39:45 - 39:49Please, listen to me.
-
39:49 - 39:51What is it?
-
39:51 - 39:57Catastrophe is round the
corner. The soldiers are hungry. -
39:57 - 40:02They're in rags. No
officers, all killed. -
40:02 - 40:05They're angry.
-
40:05 - 40:09If something's not done now the
soldiers will leave the trenches. -
40:09 - 40:13All will be in vain.
-
40:13 - 40:17Bulgarian soldiers have
seen worse than that! -
40:17 - 40:19Our hopes are with them.
-
40:19 - 40:21They're tired, sir.
-
40:21 - 40:25They're dead tired.
-
40:25 - 40:28Well Varenov, thank
you for your honesty. -
40:28 - 40:49Now go and rest.
-
40:49 - 40:56Why do your torture yourself?
-
40:56 - 40:59You've done your bit.
-
40:59 - 41:20Be silent. You don't understand.
-
41:20 - 41:26Peace is the banner of the weak.
-
41:26 - 41:31The strong raise it only
to justify an offensive. -
41:31 - 41:39To justify absurdity!
- No... -
41:39 - 41:43War has been and still remains
-
41:43 - 41:48the normal state of our poor human race.
-
41:48 - 41:53Not a very attractive philosophy.
-
41:53 - 42:01I'm afraid for you, my friend.
-
42:01 - 42:13Love makes you idealize things.
-
42:13 - 42:17You could forget what you are.
-
42:17 - 42:20It's what I want!
-
42:20 - 42:26Too selfish on her part.
- Why? -
42:26 - 42:35She doesn't suspect how hard it is
for a man in love to be imprisoned. -
42:35 - 42:39What if she is a prisoner too?
- Even then... -
42:39 - 42:45Women seek only their own slavation.
-
42:45 - 43:02Let's drop the subject.
-
43:02 - 43:08Is it so serious?
- Yes. -
43:08 - 43:11You're being a fool.
-
43:11 - 43:15Have you never been in love?
-
43:15 - 43:34Never!
- Never? -
43:34 - 44:11Good luck! And watch out!
-
44:11 - 44:15What are you doing here? Are you crazy?
-
44:15 - 44:18What's happened?
-
44:18 - 44:23Why stare at me like that?
-
44:23 - 44:28Am I to blame for something?
- I'm rather the one to blame. -
44:28 - 44:30What's with you?
-
44:30 - 44:34Don't Mr. Obrenovitch!
-
44:34 - 44:37Please, go away.
-
44:37 - 44:42There can be nothing between us.
-
44:42 - 44:44No, you're not right!
-
44:44 - 44:47You say this on purpose...
-
44:47 - 44:51You suffer... I felt it the first time.
-
44:51 - 44:53This is what brings me here.
-
44:53 - 44:56It wasn't out of compassion then...
-
44:56 - 44:59Forget it. Leave me alone.
-
44:59 - 45:03And don't think of it anymore!
-
45:03 - 45:05It's useless.
-
45:05 - 45:10I won't leave. Even if you ask me to.
-
45:10 - 45:12You aren't happy.
-
45:12 - 45:15It's absurd to talk about happiness.
-
45:15 - 45:20You have the right to be. You have!
-
45:20 - 45:23You don't love this man.
-
45:23 - 45:33You have no right! He's my husband.
-
45:33 - 45:39Yes, indeed, he's your husband.
-
45:39 - 45:43It's good you've realized it.
-
45:43 - 45:46I thought you were different.
-
45:46 - 45:47You've fooled yourself.
-
45:47 - 45:50You've fooled me!
-
45:50 - 45:55Rudeness doesn't fit you.
-
45:55 - 45:59Now please, go!
-
45:59 - 46:08I will but you take off that
mask of kindness and suffering. -
46:08 - 46:47Someone else might be fooled
-
46:47 - 46:54Come on, man it's your turn.
-
46:54 - 47:00What's going on there?
-
47:00 - 47:04Sergeant, here comes...
-
47:04 - 47:06the colonel.
-
47:06 - 47:37Now we have it coming!
-
47:37 - 47:44Lieutenant Obrenovitch!
-
47:44 - 47:47Why didn't you salute?
-
47:47 - 47:53Regulations say: "Wherever he may be
-
47:53 - 48:19a Serb officer is always on service."
-
48:19 - 48:22Too much drinking?
-
48:22 - 48:34I was waiting for you, my friend.
-
48:34 - 48:39Did you attack?
- No. -
48:39 - 48:43So you think like me?
-
48:43 - 48:46She thinks like you.
- What? -
48:46 - 48:54That there's no use.
-
48:54 - 49:12Forgive me, my friend. She deserves...
-
49:12 - 49:21You don't want to talk?
-
49:21 - 49:32It's a pity.
-
49:32 - 49:35Listen then,
-
49:35 - 49:37I was five, when...
-
49:37 - 49:39I know!
-
49:39 - 49:41When you were 5 years old,
-
49:41 - 49:49your father, Major de Greville,
took you to the cadets. -
49:49 - 49:53I know this!
-
49:53 - 49:56No more of it, please!
-
49:56 - 50:08No, Iv...No.
-
50:08 - 50:15When I was five my grandpa,
General de Greville, -
50:15 - 50:23sent me to buy him...
-
50:23 - 50:28Cigarettes...
-
50:28 - 50:39It was raining like now. Such a rain...
-
50:39 - 50:44The streets were real torrents.
-
50:44 - 50:48And do you know what I did?
-
50:48 - 50:51I tore up the pack
-
50:51 - 50:59and dropped the cigarettes
one by one in the water. -
50:59 - 51:16They floated far, far away...
-
51:16 - 51:20Tired... when the whole
nation lies in the trenches. -
51:20 - 51:24One can't think of resting.
-
51:24 - 51:28Perhaps it isn't so hopeless?
-
51:28 - 51:34The papers say nothing. Say what?
-
