  • 0:26 - 0:30
    Dear Thay, dear Sangha,
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    dear friends,
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    I have two questions.
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    I am a practitioner
  • 0:49 - 0:53
    and I go to meditation
    to find some peace.
  • 0:55 - 1:00
But I have not found it yet.
  • 1:02 - 1:06
In my life I try to live in mindfulness.
  • 1:09 - 1:16
I try to have hope in the practice.
  • 1:18 - 1:25
    I have a difficult life
and I try to stay calm.
  • 1:25 - 1:34
But I am very affected by things
    from inside and outside.
  • 1:37 - 1:43
I feel I am too weak
    to take care of myself.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
It is the same with meditation.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    I try to meditate...
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    I have experienced some times
  • 1:58 - 2:02
    that there is always something
inside of me or outside that...
  • 2:05 - 2:08
I cannot concentrate on my breathing.
  • 2:10 - 2:15
I feel I am not succeeding at it.
  • 2:16 - 2:19
    Some people say that
I am not ready to meditate.
  • 2:20 - 2:24
And I would like have some advice.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    My question is:
  • 2:28 - 2:31
    What happens during meditation
  • 2:31 - 2:39
    and what can I do
    to progress in the practice?
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    (Sr. Pine) Dear Thay,
    our friend tries her best
  • 2:50 - 2:54
to practice mindfulness in daily life.
  • 2:54 - 2:58
    But she feels she is
    strongly affected and pushed
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    by difficult situations.
  • 3:01 - 3:06
She is not able to maintain her peace.
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    While practising sitting meditation
  • 3:10 - 3:15
she tries her best but she is not
capable to concentrate on her breathing
  • 3:15 - 3:18
because of everything that is happening
    inside and outside her.
  • 3:19 - 3:22
    One person suggested that
    she may not be ready
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    to practice meditation.
  • 3:24 - 3:28
    She would like Thay
to guide her on her practice.
  • 3:35 - 3:39
    For beginners there is
    always that kind of feeling,
  • 3:39 - 3:42
    that you cannot practice well.
  • 3:43 - 3:47
    It is like playing tennis.
  • 3:48 - 3:54
You have to spend a few weeks
in order to get used to the game.
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    The practice of meditation
    is like that too.
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    But if you enjoy it,
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    you will learn very quickly.
  • 4:07 - 4:10
    You think that meditation is
    something hard to do.
  • 4:11 - 4:13
That is why you cannot enjoy.
  • 4:14 - 4:18
    You 'have to' meditate,
you 'have to' breathe in and out.
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    You have to sit still.
  • 4:21 - 4:25
    You think that
    it is something not pleasant.
  • 4:26 - 4:28
You have to force yourself to do it.
  • 4:28 - 4:34
    And in that way,
    you cannot advance easily.
  • 4:34 - 4:39
    So the first thing is
    to make it pleasant.
  • 4:39 - 4:44
    Whether it is walking,
    or breathing or sitting
  • 4:44 - 4:47
    you have to learn
    to make it pleasant.
  • 4:49 - 4:53
When it is pleasant you can
be with it much more easily.
  • 4:53 - 4:55
It can be nourishing and healing.
  • 4:56 - 5:00
And you will miss it if
you don't have the chance to do it.
  • 5:00 - 5:05
    There are those of us
    who need sitting,
  • 5:05 - 5:08
    need breathing and need walking.
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    We cannot be without these,
  • 5:10 - 5:15
    because they bring us
    relaxation, peace and joy.
  • 5:16 - 5:21
So the first thing is to try
to learn to meditate in such a way
  • 5:21 - 5:27
    that the practice can be
    pleasant, nourishing and healing.
  • 5:27 - 5:30
Not something you have to do.
  • 5:31 - 5:33
    The second thing is that
  • 5:33 - 5:39
you have to be with a group
of practitioners, as you are a beginner.
  • 5:40 - 5:45
The collective energy of a sangha
will help you to practice better.
  • 5:46 - 5:50
You see that everyone is sitting
and enjoying breathing in and out.
  • 5:51 - 5:54
    Everyone is making steps
    happily, joyfully.
  • 5:55 - 5:59
Then you rely on the collective energy
    of joy and mindfulness
  • 5:59 - 6:01
in order to breathe and walk.
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    You need a sangha.
  • 6:06 - 6:09
You should learn to practice with a sangha
  • 6:09 - 6:12
to profit from the collective energy.
  • 6:14 - 6:15

  • 6:19 - 6:25
