E Shape Barre Chord Grips 7 & Min7 (Guitar Lesson IM-121) How to play IF Stage 2
-
0:10 - 0:11Hi, how are you doing?
Justin here -
0:11 - 0:17Welcome to IM-121
which is the start of Foundation 2. -
0:17 - 0:20In this lesson we're going to be checking out
the E shaped bar chords, -
0:20 - 0:24the Dominant 7th, and the minor 7th.
-
0:24 - 0:26Now I'm hoping
that you've done lots of practice -
0:26 - 0:28on your E-shaped major
and minor bar chords, -
0:28 - 0:31because these ones are
just a little bit trickier -
0:31 - 0:34because they've got a few extra notes
under the bar. -
0:34 - 0:36There are things that you need to remember too,
-
0:36 - 0:39so make sure that all of this stuff
goes into your memory bank. -
0:39 - 0:42Don't have to rely on a book
or a piece of paper or whatever, -
0:42 - 0:44because when you're playing chords for real
you can't be having a book around, -
0:44 - 0:46so you've got to have the chord shapes in here.
-
0:46 - 0:49Let's get to a close up and check out
this Dominant 7th -
0:49 - 0:52and the minor 7th bar chord shapes.
-
0:54 - 0:57Here we are,
starting with a G Major bar chord. -
0:57 - 1:01The same rules apply,
1st finger is still slightly on its side, -
1:01 - 1:03the rest of the fingers are all on their tips,
-
1:03 - 1:07got a nice kind of round shape going on.
Now, to get our Dominant 7th chord, -
1:07 - 1:10which is usually just said as a '7'.
-
1:10 - 1:13What I'm about to show you is
a G Dominant 7th chord, -
1:13 - 1:17but usually it will just be written
and said as G7. -
1:17 - 1:19All we have to do is lift our little finger off,
-
1:19 - 1:23so it should be kind of easier, right?
Because we've got less fingers on. -
1:23 - 1:24Well yeah and no.
-
1:24 - 1:28The thing that happens now
is that we're using the bar here for this 4th string, -
1:28 - 1:31so for the regular major chord,
-
1:31 - 1:36we've just got the thickest string,
and the thinnest two strings played by the bar, -
1:36 - 1:38so it can be round a bit,
you know, -
1:38 - 1:42that's not really touching these middle strings,
but now, once the little finger has come off, -
1:42 - 1:45you have to be really thinking
of the pressure there -
1:45 - 1:49in the the middle part of that 1st finger.
-
1:49 - 1:55Now, what some of you may find is
that the note sounds a little bit dead -
1:55 - 1:56and there's a few culprits.
-
1:56 - 2:00The most common one is
the 3rd finger's laying a little bit too flat -
2:00 - 2:02and touching that 4th string,
-
2:02 - 2:07so you'll find just by kind of pressing
this part of your hand up a little bit, -
2:07 - 2:09it'll make the finger a little rounder.
-
2:09 - 2:09. . .
-
2:09 - 2:11and you'll get that note back again.
-
2:11 - 2:14Now, other times, people haven't got
their bar strong enough yet, -
2:14 - 2:17and that's why we're looking at
these chords now. -
2:17 - 2:20It's because they really work on getting
your bar strengths really good, -
2:20 - 2:23and you'll have to press that part.
-
2:23 - 2:27That middle part of your 1st finger
really has to press down hard -
2:27 - 2:30in order to get that note.
-
2:30 - 2:37Now, as usual, you'll be doing strum,
pick the notes out one at a time, and strum. -
2:37 - 2:41But you want to pay extra special attention to this note.
-
2:41 - 2:42For the G7 it's the note F.
-
2:42 - 2:44. . .
-
2:44 - 2:48The 4th string,
that's the one that you really want to pay attention to. -
2:49 - 2:52Now the other chord we're looking at
in this lesson is a minor 7th. -
2:52 - 2:55. . .
-
2:55 - 2:58and this one, as you can see,
there's a lot of barre work going on, -
2:58 - 3:01so we've got,
the barre is covering all 6 strings, -
3:01 - 3:06the 3rd finger is in its usual place,
2 frets above the barre on the 5th string. -
3:06 - 3:08. . .
-
3:08 - 3:10But all of the notes are played by the barre,
-
3:10 - 3:14so this one really requires
good barre stamina and good strength. -
3:14 - 3:17I mentioned it last time,
but I'll mention it again -
3:17 - 3:20you've got to press in the middle of the barre,
-
3:20 - 3:23that's where you've got to feel
the pressure going on for this chord. -
3:23 - 3:26It's no good having a slightly round one now.
-
3:26 - 3:28You've really got to be thinking
about that pressure going right in. -
3:28 - 3:32Now, I do tend to hear if I'm using this one
-
3:32 - 3:36the 2nd finger can kind of sneak in here
for a bit of support there. -
3:36 - 3:38Because that's a pretty tough chord,
-
3:38 - 3:40especially when I hold it for a long time
on an acoustic guitar, -
3:40 - 3:44it gets pretty tough even for me to do it,
you know so, I do it fine, -
3:44 - 3:47but if I had to do it for a long time,
I'd probably get 2nd finger -
3:47 - 3:52just laying there on top of the 1st finger
to give it a little bit of support. -
3:52 - 3:56As usual you'll be picking the strings
one at a time. -
3:57 - 3:59The only kind of common things
that you get here -
3:59 - 4:02is the barre not working properly,
-
4:02 - 4:04you might have the 3rd finger laying down
a little bit too flat -
4:04 - 4:07and muting the 4th string,
not as likely -
4:07 - 4:10because you generally have to push
your hand around a little bit -
4:10 - 4:13to get that proper pressure
down with the barre. -
4:13 - 4:15It's a bit of a fiddle, you know,
it's a tough chord. -
4:15 - 4:18That's not one you're probably going to get right away,
you know, -
4:18 - 4:20unless you've got really big strong hands.
-
4:20 - 4:23I really struggled with this,
when I learnt it, you know . -
4:23 - 4:25It's just developing that kind of strength there
-
4:25 - 4:29with the muscle in between your thumb
and your' first finger there. -
4:29 - 4:31That's the one that gets
a bit of a workout for this. -
4:31 - 4:33You should be feeling that.
-
4:33 - 4:36So now just to kind of recap,
you should know your major -
4:36 - 4:38. . .
-
4:38 - 4:39minor,
-
4:39 - 4:41. . .
-
4:41 - 4:43go back to major again,
lift off little finger, -
4:43 - 4:44. . .
-
4:44 - 4:45you've got the 7th
-
4:45 - 4:49back to major again, lift off your little finger
and your 2nd finger -
4:49 - 4:50. . .
-
4:50 - 4:51and you get the minor 7.
-
4:51 - 4:55So, in case you hadn't noticed,
lifting off the little finger is the one that makes it 7. -
4:55 - 4:57So there's major, there's 7,
-
4:57 - 5:01there's minor, there's minor 7.
-
5:01 - 5:05So, that's a good little trick to help you remember
the names of the different shapes, -
5:05 - 5:08and now all you've got to do is practice them.
-
5:09 - 5:13Well I hope that you enjoy the workout
that practicing those chords is going to give you. -
5:13 - 5:17Don't be too disappointed
if you find that minor 7 chord pretty hard. -
5:17 - 5:19It's a tricky little number that one.
-
5:19 - 5:23Getting that barre strong enough,
holding down all of those notes, -
5:23 - 5:26it's a tough call
and it just takes practice. -
5:26 - 5:30It's all about developing that muscle
between your first finger and your thumb. -
5:31 - 5:33Technique of course has a role as well,
-
5:33 - 5:36making sure that your barre is rolled onto the side
and that kind of thing. -
5:36 - 5:40That's still important, but, as well,
it's kind of just a strength thing. -
5:40 - 5:43It's just going to take a little bit of practice.
-
5:43 - 5:44So have fun with that,
-
5:44 - 5:46make sure you remember
to put them into your memory. -
5:46 - 5:48Don't leave them out in the cold
in the book, you know, -
5:48 - 5:50make sure you get them in there.
-
5:50 - 5:52Practice them,
look at the relationship between them -
5:52 - 5:56so you can see what it is that changes
between the major and the minor. -
5:56 - 5:59Listen to them as well, you know.
Not a bad idea to have a listen to them -
5:59 - 6:02and kind of get used to
what the different chords sound like. -
6:02 - 6:04We'll be doing a bit more of that
later on, anyway. -
6:05 - 6:10Have fun, and I shall see you
for more lessons very very soon. Bye Bye.
