  • 1:18 - 1:21
before we delve into this episode i'd
  • 1:21 - 1:23
like to thank dungeons and dragons for
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    sponsoring this
  • 1:24 - 1:26
video not so long ago dungeons and
  • 1:26 - 1:27
    dragons reached out
  • 1:27 - 1:29
and asked whether i'd be interested in
  • 1:29 - 1:30
    taking part in a dnd
  • 1:30 - 1:33
game with a few other creators for their
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    channel
  • 1:34 - 1:36
and let me tell you i jumped at the
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    opportunity
  • 1:37 - 1:39
i absolutely love immersing myself in
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    the storytelling and creativity within
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    dnd campaigns
  • 1:43 - 1:45
and honestly the campaign we did was so
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    much fun
  • 1:46 - 1:49
and full of twists and turns now if you
  • 1:49 - 1:49
    don't know what d
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    d is it's a role-playing game that you
  • 1:52 - 1:54
can play with your friends in person or
  • 1:54 - 1:56
over the internet using video or voice
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    chats
  • 1:57 - 1:59
where you embark on a fantasy adventure
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    as a massive storytelling fan
  • 2:02 - 2:04
hindi is in my blood you journey through
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    a story with your friends
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    battling enemies questioning characters
  • 2:08 - 2:09
    going on quests
  • 2:09 - 2:12
and so much more the possibilities
  • 2:12 - 2:13
    within the game
  • 2:13 - 2:16
are quite literally just limited by your
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    imagination
  • 2:17 - 2:18
during the campaign that i took part in
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    with other creators which
  • 2:20 - 2:22
by the way we fully recorded so you can
  • 2:22 - 2:24
watch over on dnd's youtube channel
  • 2:24 - 2:27
one of my absolute favorite moments was
  • 2:27 - 2:28
    when my character
  • 2:28 - 2:31
    sherlock and joel's character theodoma
  • 2:31 - 2:33
were bickering with one another at the
  • 2:33 - 2:34
city library it was just so
  • 2:34 - 2:37
funny and it literally had me screaming
  • 2:37 - 2:37
    i'm
  • 2:37 - 2:39
without giving too much away i
  • 2:39 - 2:40
absolutely loved the ending of the
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    campaign too
  • 2:41 - 2:43
the story arc and character development
  • 2:43 - 2:45
throughout was just so natural and so
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    beautiful
  • 2:46 - 2:47
i just couldn't recommend watching the
  • 2:47 - 2:49
campaign more if you're interested in d
  • 2:49 - 2:50
    d
  • 2:50 - 2:53
here's a short sneak preview we have
  • 2:53 - 2:55
quite an adventure for you today
  • 2:55 - 2:57
i've never seen anything like this both
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    of you are such
  • 2:59 - 3:03
excellent hunters oh it's a one
  • 3:03 - 3:05
i want to find out more am i dead right
  • 3:05 - 3:06
    now
  • 3:06 - 3:09
in d you play as a character mine being
  • 3:09 - 3:10
    called
  • 3:10 - 3:12
sherlock because i was a detective who
  • 3:12 - 3:13
    was also
  • 3:13 - 3:16
an orc you like my pun and before you
  • 3:16 - 3:17
    start on a campaign
  • 3:17 - 3:18
you use dice to roll different
  • 3:18 - 3:20
attributes for your character which are
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    used throughout the campaign
  • 3:22 - 3:24
you also get to choose your race in
  • 3:24 - 3:26
class and you can customize your
  • 3:26 - 3:26
    abilities
  • 3:26 - 3:29
skills spells weapons and so much more
  • 3:29 - 3:31
the character sheet is super important
  • 3:31 - 3:32
    and useful when
  • 3:32 - 3:34
playing d d and is one of the core
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    aspects to the game
  • 3:36 - 3:37
i know it may seem a bit complex at
  • 3:37 - 3:40
first glance though it is truly simple
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    to understand and use
  • 3:42 - 3:43
you can see from the character sheet for
  • 3:43 - 3:46
    my character sherlock hawthorne
  • 3:46 - 3:48
that sherlock is a rogue half-orc with
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    an investigator background
  • 3:50 - 3:52
you use dice rolls to determine
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    attributes such as your strength
  • 3:54 - 3:55
    dexterity
  • 3:55 - 3:58
and intelligence sherlock's hp is kept
  • 3:58 - 4:00
track of throughout the campaign here
  • 4:00 - 4:03
and i can easily see what armor weapons
  • 4:03 - 4:05
and tools are at my disposal
  • 4:05 - 4:07
from a quick glance and the game is
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    forever expanding with new content
  • 4:09 - 4:11
if you've never played before you can
  • 4:11 - 4:12
    grab a beginner's kits
  • 4:12 - 4:15
like the d d starter sets or if you just
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    want to launch
  • 4:16 - 4:18
straight into a campaign you can grab
  • 4:18 - 4:20
one of the many pre-written campaign
  • 4:20 - 4:20
    books
  • 4:20 - 4:23
it's such an accessible game more so now
  • 4:23 - 4:24
    than ever before
  • 4:24 - 4:27
you can find the character sheet for my
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    character sherlock in the description
  • 4:29 - 4:30
    down below
  • 4:30 - 4:31
and you're more than welcome to use my
  • 4:31 - 4:34
character in your own dnd games be sure
  • 4:34 - 4:36
to send me a dm on instagram or tag me
  • 4:36 - 4:38
on twitter if you do use sherlock
  • 4:38 - 4:40
i'd love to see it and of course you can
  • 4:40 - 4:41
    watch the d d
  • 4:41 - 4:42
campaign that i played with other
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    creators over on the dnd
  • 4:44 - 4:46
youtube channel i've also linked this
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    down below for you
  • 4:48 - 4:52
    now back to the case
  • 4:52 - 4:56
sandra chesky was born in 1960 to her
  • 4:56 - 4:56
    mother
  • 4:56 - 4:59
dolores and cameron she was the youngest
  • 4:59 - 5:01
of four children born to the couple with
  • 5:01 - 5:03
five children being born in quick
  • 5:03 - 5:04
    succession
  • 5:04 - 5:06
though sadly the couple lost their
  • 5:06 - 5:08
    second baby boy
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    shortly after birth and unfortunately
  • 5:10 - 5:13
the marriage between dolores and cameron
  • 5:13 - 5:16
wasn't one destined to last the couple
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    experienced great financial difficulties
  • 5:18 - 5:20
which led to numerous arguments between
  • 5:20 - 5:21
    them
  • 5:21 - 5:23
causing cameron to leave dolores with
  • 5:23 - 5:25
    three boys and one girl
  • 5:25 - 5:27
all of her children due to them being so
  • 5:27 - 5:29
    young constantly wanted attention from
  • 5:29 - 5:30
    their mother
  • 5:30 - 5:32
and as dolores had become a single
  • 5:32 - 5:34
mother she had to work long
  • 5:34 - 5:36
hours to keep herself afloat on top of
  • 5:36 - 5:37
    the long working
  • 5:37 - 5:40
hours dolores also decided to go back to
  • 5:40 - 5:41
    school
  • 5:41 - 5:43
and train to become a nurse in the hopes
  • 5:43 - 5:45
    it would provide a
  • 5:45 - 5:47
    financially more secure future though
  • 5:47 - 5:49
    this meant that she had
  • 5:49 - 5:51
little to no time for looking after her
  • 5:51 - 5:53
    children and so
  • 5:53 - 5:55
dolores parents offered to look after
  • 5:55 - 5:57
the kids until she had gone through at
  • 5:57 - 5:58
    nursing school
  • 5:58 - 6:01
and when sandra was just 18 months old
  • 6:01 - 6:02
    she and her brothers
  • 6:02 - 6:04
moved to live in the care of her
  • 6:04 - 6:05
    grandparents
  • 6:05 - 6:07
the children would ultimately end up
  • 6:07 - 6:08
    staying with their grandparents
  • 6:08 - 6:11
for three and a half years until sandra
  • 6:11 - 6:13
    would turn four years old
  • 6:13 - 6:14
and life growing up on their
  • 6:14 - 6:17
    grandparents farm wasn't easy
  • 6:17 - 6:18
    especially as their grandparents were
  • 6:18 - 6:20
aging and didn't have the same energy
  • 6:20 - 6:24
and mobility as they once had it was at
  • 6:24 - 6:25
her grandparents farm that sandra would
  • 6:25 - 6:27
    develop a deep love
  • 6:27 - 6:29
for animals and sandra would leave her
  • 6:29 - 6:30
    grandparents farm
  • 6:30 - 6:33
with memories of love and happiness
  • 6:33 - 6:35
memories she would reflect on and
  • 6:35 - 6:37
memories that would bring her strength
  • 6:37 - 6:39
in the years to come by the time that
  • 6:39 - 6:40
    sandra had started
  • 6:40 - 6:43
school her mother had met a new man and
  • 6:43 - 6:45
    as sandra's school career progressed
  • 6:45 - 6:47
living under the same roof as her
  • 6:47 - 6:49
    brother's mother and stepdad
  • 6:49 - 6:52
things became tense her brother on one
  • 6:52 - 6:53
    occasion
  • 6:53 - 6:55
shouted at their stepdad saying that he
  • 6:55 - 6:57
hated him and that he wasn't their dad
  • 6:57 - 6:59
this fighting became the norm for
  • 6:59 - 7:01
    sandra's family
  • 7:01 - 7:03
and it deeply upsetted sandra this all
  • 7:03 - 7:05
came to a head when sandra returned home
  • 7:05 - 7:06
    from school one day
  • 7:06 - 7:08
to the news that she and her brother
  • 7:08 - 7:10
bill were being sent to live with
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    different foster families
  • 7:12 - 7:14
sandra barely caused any issues at home
  • 7:14 - 7:15
    and such a drastic
  • 7:15 - 7:18
upheaval of her life caused a lot of
  • 7:18 - 7:20
pain and confusion she would later find
  • 7:20 - 7:21
out from a relative that this was due to
  • 7:21 - 7:22
    a
  • 7:22 - 7:23
alleged drinking problem that was going
  • 7:23 - 7:26
on at home but sandra knew that she
  • 7:26 - 7:27
hadn't been underage drinking and she
  • 7:27 - 7:30
hadn't had any problems with her stepdad
  • 7:30 - 7:32
sandra presumes that the step-dad simply
  • 7:32 - 7:34
didn't know how to handle kids
  • 7:34 - 7:36
and so sent her and her brother away
  • 7:36 - 7:37
    whatever the case
  • 7:37 - 7:39
sandra was rushed into the home of her
  • 7:39 - 7:40
    foster family
  • 7:40 - 7:42
but the foster families she had been
  • 7:42 - 7:43
    placed with
  • 7:43 - 7:46
weren't good people sandra broke down on
  • 7:46 - 7:48
the phone to her mother one night and
  • 7:48 - 7:49
told of how her foster parents would
  • 7:49 - 7:50
    beat their
  • 7:50 - 7:53
own child with a wire coat hanger as a
  • 7:53 - 7:54
    result of this
  • 7:54 - 7:56
sandra was removed from the foster
  • 7:56 - 7:58
family's care and was taken to a second
  • 7:58 - 8:01
foster family and tragically this second
  • 8:01 - 8:03
    foster family
  • 8:03 - 8:05
were cold and uncaring towards her they
  • 8:05 - 8:06
    never
  • 8:06 - 8:08
acknowledged that she was there sandra
  • 8:08 - 8:09
    felt like an
  • 8:09 - 8:12
unpaid maid rather than a foster child
  • 8:12 - 8:13
    fortunately
  • 8:13 - 8:15
after begging her mother to let her come
  • 8:15 - 8:17
home sandra left the care of her second
  • 8:17 - 8:19
foster family and returns to the family
  • 8:19 - 8:20
    home
  • 8:20 - 8:23
though the child hating stepdad still
  • 8:23 - 8:24
    lives there
  • 8:24 - 8:27
sandra's brother bill also returned back
  • 8:27 - 8:28
    to the family home
  • 8:28 - 8:30
and he'd actually had a good experience
  • 8:30 - 8:32
being fostered with a police officer's
  • 8:32 - 8:34
    family
  • 8:34 - 8:36
sir stop wreaking havoc on the set i
  • 8:36 - 8:37
    apologize if you can
  • 8:37 - 8:38
hear any noise in the background of this
  • 8:38 - 8:40
video my cat is in the filming room at
  • 8:40 - 8:41
    the moment
  • 8:41 - 8:45
and he has decided to wreak havoc
  • 8:45 - 8:47
their stepdad was not pleased in the
  • 8:47 - 8:50
slightest and as sandra and bill were of
  • 8:50 - 8:51
    native american descent
  • 8:51 - 8:54
he sent them off to a native american
  • 8:54 - 8:55
    boarding school
  • 8:55 - 8:57
the shabby boarding school was located
  • 8:57 - 8:58
    in south dakota
  • 8:58 - 9:00
sandra and bill both had pretty bad
  • 9:00 - 9:01
    experiences at this school
  • 9:01 - 9:04
with a stern nun on one occasion telling
  • 9:04 - 9:05
    sanjo that she'd never return
  • 9:05 - 9:08
home but when the school term ended
  • 9:08 - 9:10
sandra and bill return to the family
  • 9:10 - 9:12
home for the summer over that summer
  • 9:12 - 9:14
sandra managed to convince her mother to
  • 9:14 - 9:15
not send her and bill back to the
  • 9:15 - 9:16
    boarding school
  • 9:16 - 9:18
and it appeared that the fighting within
  • 9:18 - 9:20
the house had completely calmed down it
  • 9:20 - 9:22
was as if a new leaf had been turned
  • 9:22 - 9:24
out of nowhere sandra's mother informed
  • 9:24 - 9:26
her kids that they were moving to a tiny
  • 9:26 - 9:28
    town in south dakota
  • 9:28 - 9:30
a town called t the children were now
  • 9:30 - 9:32
all in their teens but from sandra who
  • 9:32 - 9:33
    was to turn
  • 9:33 - 9:36
13 within a few months and yet another
  • 9:36 - 9:37
    upheaval of their lives
  • 9:37 - 9:40
losing friends and changing schools left
  • 9:40 - 9:41
    the children feeling crushed and
  • 9:41 - 9:44
devastated by the summer of 1973
  • 9:44 - 9:46
the family had settled into a large
  • 9:46 - 9:49
farmhouse just outside the town of tea
  • 9:49 - 9:51
at south dakota it was a short half-mile
  • 9:51 - 9:53
    walk into town
  • 9:53 - 9:55
a walk that the children took numerous
  • 9:55 - 9:56
times that summer to find something to
  • 9:56 - 9:57
    do
  • 9:57 - 9:59
sandra soon made friends within the
  • 9:59 - 10:01
small town and eventually she went with
  • 10:01 - 10:03
another girl to the drive-in theater the
  • 10:03 - 10:04
    girls didn't stay
  • 10:04 - 10:07
in the car they cut out to go socialize
  • 10:07 - 10:09
with other teens from the town
  • 10:09 - 10:11
it was then that sandra first laid her
  • 10:11 - 10:13
eyes on a boy who she fell in love with
  • 10:13 - 10:16
roger essen roger was a friend of the
  • 10:16 - 10:17
girl sandra had come to the
  • 10:17 - 10:18
    drive-through with
  • 10:18 - 10:20
and he began talking to sandra as if
  • 10:20 - 10:22
they'd known each other for years
  • 10:22 - 10:24
alongside roger was another boy called
  • 10:24 - 10:26
    stuart bade
  • 10:26 - 10:29
    roger's best friend sandra exchanged
  • 10:29 - 10:30
    phone numbers with the boys
  • 10:30 - 10:33
and parted ways when roger phoned sandra
  • 10:33 - 10:34
    for the first time
  • 10:34 - 10:36
they spoke on the phone for an hour
  • 10:36 - 10:39
before roger decided to ask sandra out
  • 10:39 - 10:39
    on a date
  • 10:39 - 10:42
over the course of the late summer roger
  • 10:42 - 10:43
and sandra went on many dates
  • 10:43 - 10:46
and began a relationship together roger
  • 10:46 - 10:48
who was actually 17 years old
  • 10:48 - 10:51
didn't know that sandra was just 13.
  • 10:51 - 10:53
sandra looked a lot older than she was
  • 10:53 - 10:54
and she didn't want to ruin their
  • 10:54 - 10:56
    relationship with the truth
  • 10:56 - 10:58
so she kept her age to herself roger
  • 10:58 - 11:00
    attended the washington high
  • 11:00 - 11:03
school in sixth fulls south dakota
  • 11:03 - 11:04
    another one of roger's friends
  • 11:04 - 11:07
mike hadreth also attended the high
  • 11:07 - 11:07
    school
  • 11:07 - 11:09
and actually lived just half a block
  • 11:09 - 11:11
away from rogers so naturally the two
  • 11:11 - 11:13
spent a lot of time together
  • 11:13 - 11:15
mike was a popular sophomore with a huge
  • 11:15 - 11:16
    talent for athletics and
  • 11:16 - 11:19
sports he was in practically every
  • 11:19 - 11:20
    school sports team
  • 11:20 - 11:22
and was very successful in his sporting
  • 11:22 - 11:25
career on friday the 16th of november
  • 11:25 - 11:26
    1973
  • 11:26 - 11:28
roger and mike crossed paths in the
  • 11:28 - 11:29
    hallways at school
  • 11:29 - 11:31
and decided to make plans for the
  • 11:31 - 11:33
weekends they decided to invite a few
  • 11:33 - 11:34
    friends to go with them
  • 11:34 - 11:36
to hike out to gichi manitou state
  • 11:36 - 11:38
    preserve whether just
  • 11:38 - 11:40
hang out build a fire and listen to some
  • 11:40 - 11:42
    music roger's friend
  • 11:42 - 11:44
stuart bade who had been with roger when
  • 11:44 - 11:45
    he'd first met
  • 11:45 - 11:48
sandra had a driver's license and a van
  • 11:48 - 11:50
that he could use to drive everyone to
  • 11:50 - 11:51
the state to preserve the group that
  • 11:51 - 11:53
    they settled on included roger
  • 11:53 - 11:56
mike stewart and stu's 14 year old
  • 11:56 - 11:56
    brother
  • 11:56 - 11:59
donna and sandra in the morning of the
  • 11:59 - 12:02
    17th of november 1973
  • 12:02 - 12:04
mike kissed his mum goodbye and waited
  • 12:04 - 12:06
for stu and his brother donna to pick
  • 12:06 - 12:08
him up mike's mum watched as mike left
  • 12:08 - 12:10
the house to walk to the van
  • 12:10 - 12:13
unknowingly forming her last memory of
  • 12:13 - 12:13
    mike
  • 12:13 - 12:16
alive at about 2 p.m on that saturday
  • 12:16 - 12:18
roger phoned up sandra and invited her
  • 12:18 - 12:20
on the trip to gucci manitou
  • 12:20 - 12:22
and sandra said she'd love to go roger
  • 12:22 - 12:23
told her that they would be coming to
  • 12:23 - 12:24
    pick her up
  • 12:24 - 12:26
in stu's van and as sandra's mother
  • 12:26 - 12:28
works late hours she had a lot of
  • 12:28 - 12:30
flexibility with what she could do
  • 12:30 - 12:32
and so she raced to get herself ready
  • 12:32 - 12:34
but by the time 8pm had rolled around
  • 12:34 - 12:36
and stu still hadn't picked her up
  • 12:36 - 12:38
sandra started to worry she began to
  • 12:38 - 12:40
    overthink everything
  • 12:40 - 12:42
did roger hate her had she said
  • 12:42 - 12:44
something wrong she cried on the sofa
  • 12:44 - 12:46
going over her conversation on the phone
  • 12:46 - 12:47
    over and over again
  • 12:47 - 12:50
analyzing it though just as it seems she
  • 12:50 - 12:51
    had been ditched
  • 12:51 - 12:54
sandra received a phone call from stu
  • 12:54 - 12:56
who explains that they'd made a few
  • 12:56 - 12:57
stops to collect some supplies and that
  • 12:57 - 12:59
there'd be about half an hour
  • 12:59 - 13:02
sandra's worries melted away she told
  • 13:02 - 13:04
stu that her brother bill had just
  • 13:04 - 13:04
    gotten
  • 13:04 - 13:06
home and asked whether he could come
  • 13:06 - 13:07
along with him on the trip
  • 13:07 - 13:10
and stu said sure and so 30 minutes
  • 13:10 - 13:11
    later
  • 13:11 - 13:13
stu's van pulled into the drive and
  • 13:13 - 13:15
sandra and bill left the family home to
  • 13:15 - 13:16
    get into the van
  • 13:16 - 13:18
though just as bill was climbing in one
  • 13:18 - 13:20
of bill's friends also pulled into the
  • 13:20 - 13:21
    driveway
  • 13:21 - 13:22
and told him that he was going to a
  • 13:22 - 13:24
party and that a hot girl that bill had
  • 13:24 - 13:27
a massive crush on was going to be there
  • 13:27 - 13:28
bill looked at sandra with an expression
  • 13:28 - 13:29
    of
  • 13:29 - 13:31
do you mind if i go to this party
  • 13:31 - 13:33
instead and sandra laughed at bill and
  • 13:33 - 13:34
told him to go get the girl before
  • 13:34 - 13:36
    closing the van door and
  • 13:36 - 13:37
setting off on the journey to get
  • 13:37 - 13:40
humanity roger and sandra held hands as
  • 13:40 - 13:40
    stu's van
  • 13:40 - 13:43
raced down the roads to get humanity
  • 13:43 - 13:45
until the van came to an abrupt
  • 13:45 - 13:47
stop sandra glanced out the window of
  • 13:47 - 13:48
    the van
  • 13:48 - 13:49
and realized that they weren't in gucci
  • 13:49 - 13:51
manitou at all but were actually backing
  • 13:51 - 13:52
    the town
  • 13:52 - 13:54
stu had forgotten his guitar which he
  • 13:54 - 13:56
ran to grab from his house
  • 13:56 - 13:58
before finally the group set off in the
  • 13:58 - 13:59
    van for
  • 13:59 - 14:01
the state's preserve the sun had already
  • 14:01 - 14:03
dipped below the horizon when they had
  • 14:03 - 14:04
    arrived
  • 14:04 - 14:06
    with darkness enveloping the state
  • 14:06 - 14:07
    preserve wind
  • 14:07 - 14:09
and wildlife rustled in the bushes as
  • 14:09 - 14:11
the teenagers climbed out of the van
  • 14:11 - 14:13
into the nature that surrounded them
  • 14:13 - 14:14
sandra asked the groove if there was
  • 14:14 - 14:16
anyone else in the area and after a
  • 14:16 - 14:18
    quick scan around
  • 14:18 - 14:20
she replied by saying that there doesn't
  • 14:20 - 14:21
    seem to be
  • 14:21 - 14:23
steve's 14 year old brother grabs some
  • 14:23 - 14:24
paper from the van to use as a fire
  • 14:24 - 14:26
starter as roger tried to locate the
  • 14:26 - 14:28
best place to have a campfire
  • 14:28 - 14:30
though the group stumbled upon a
  • 14:30 - 14:32
    recently extinguished campfire
  • 14:32 - 14:34
and decided to walk further down near
  • 14:34 - 14:35
the bank of a river so that they
  • 14:35 - 14:36
    wouldn't be
  • 14:36 - 14:39
disturbed the november cold began to set
  • 14:39 - 14:40
    in and the need for
  • 14:40 - 14:43
the warmth of a fire became pressing the
  • 14:43 - 14:44
    grape grabbed dead
  • 14:44 - 14:46
wood from the surrounding trees and
  • 14:46 - 14:48
    promptly lit a small campfire
  • 14:48 - 14:50
they sat around the heats that radiated
  • 14:50 - 14:51
from the fire with sandra leaning
  • 14:51 - 14:52
    against roger
  • 14:52 - 14:55
her romantic fantasies coming true dana
  • 14:55 - 14:57
    stew's 14 year old brother
  • 14:57 - 14:59
got up to stoke the fire but suddenly
  • 14:59 - 15:00
    stopped
  • 15:00 - 15:02
a noise in the distance caught his
  • 15:02 - 15:04
    attention down his eyes
  • 15:04 - 15:06
darting to the tree lines scanning for
  • 15:06 - 15:08
    the source of the noise
  • 15:08 - 15:09
he asked the others whether they had
  • 15:09 - 15:11
    heard that sound
  • 15:11 - 15:13
donna was a popular eighth grader at a
  • 15:13 - 15:15
junior high school in six falls
  • 15:15 - 15:17
and he idolized his older brother stu
  • 15:17 - 15:19
stu works hard in trying to become
  • 15:19 - 15:20
    america's next
  • 15:20 - 15:22
biggest band and donna wanted to follow
  • 15:22 - 15:25
in stu's footsteps stu was constantly
  • 15:25 - 15:26
    teaching
  • 15:26 - 15:28
donna new guitar chords and he gave dan
  • 15:28 - 15:30
a ride in his van whenever he wanted it
  • 15:30 - 15:32
    the relationship between the two
  • 15:32 - 15:33
    brothers was strong
  • 15:33 - 15:35
and unbreakable they were very very
  • 15:35 - 15:36
    close it was about 9
  • 15:36 - 15:40
    50 p.m on the 17th of november 1973 when
  • 15:40 - 15:41
    donna had heard
  • 15:41 - 15:43
the strange noise coming from the tree
  • 15:43 - 15:45
lines and he hadn't been the only one in
  • 15:45 - 15:46
    the group to hear
  • 15:46 - 15:48
it roger focused immediately on the tree
  • 15:48 - 15:51
line and in hushed whispers he told stu
  • 15:51 - 15:52
to stop playing the guitar and for
  • 15:52 - 15:54
everyone to be quiet for a minute
  • 15:54 - 15:56
sandra heard what sounded like a twig
  • 15:56 - 15:57
    snap nearby
  • 15:57 - 15:59
and when she looked at roger she knew
  • 15:59 - 16:01
    that he'd heard it too
  • 16:01 - 16:03
was it just an animal in the woods was
  • 16:03 - 16:05
    it a human
  • 16:05 - 16:07
sandra's mind began racing the group
  • 16:07 - 16:08
    felt silence
  • 16:08 - 16:10
everyone listening to the sounds of the
  • 16:10 - 16:11
    nature that surrounded them
  • 16:11 - 16:14
another twig snapped then another there
  • 16:14 - 16:15
    was definitely
  • 16:15 - 16:18
something out there whatever it was was
  • 16:18 - 16:19
    getting closer
  • 16:19 - 16:21
the group rose to their feet could it be
  • 16:21 - 16:24
a bear the crackling of the fire filled
  • 16:24 - 16:26
the silence as they continued to listen
  • 16:26 - 16:29
with fear slowly consuming them after a
  • 16:29 - 16:30
    few more moments
  • 16:30 - 16:31
stew decided to break the tension by
  • 16:31 - 16:34
playing a few chords on his guitar
  • 16:34 - 16:36
and the group's fear slowly dissipated
  • 16:36 - 16:38
as they began to sing along to stu's
  • 16:38 - 16:40
guitar playing the boys began to roll a
  • 16:40 - 16:40
    cigarette
  • 16:40 - 16:42
and passed it around the group hoping
  • 16:42 - 16:44
the nicotine would help to take the edge
  • 16:44 - 16:46
off stu noticed that the campfire was
  • 16:46 - 16:47
    beginning to die down
  • 16:47 - 16:49
and asked his brother donna to go with
  • 16:49 - 16:51
him to grab some more dead wood from the
  • 16:51 - 16:53
    forest that surrounded them
  • 16:53 - 16:55
and after a while sandra began to
  • 16:55 - 16:56
    realize that stew and donna
  • 16:56 - 16:58
hadn't returned from beyond the tree
  • 16:58 - 17:01
line her worried train of thought was
  • 17:01 - 17:02
    abruptly interrupted by yet
  • 17:02 - 17:04
another strange sound causing her to
  • 17:04 - 17:06
    gasp in shock
  • 17:06 - 17:08
she turned to roger and mike and saw by
  • 17:08 - 17:10
the expression on their faces that
  • 17:10 - 17:11
    they'd heard it too
  • 17:11 - 17:13
was it just stu and donna mike called
  • 17:13 - 17:15
out for stu and donna and they shouted
  • 17:15 - 17:16
    back
  • 17:16 - 17:17
but from the opposite direction from
  • 17:17 - 17:19
where the strange noises were coming
  • 17:19 - 17:20
    from
  • 17:20 - 17:22
more twigs snapped the sound getting
  • 17:22 - 17:24
    closer and closer
  • 17:24 - 17:26
and all of a sudden stu and donna burst
  • 17:26 - 17:27
    from the dark tree line
  • 17:27 - 17:30
with empty hands the group could all
  • 17:30 - 17:32
    sense something was wrong
  • 17:32 - 17:33
but they could not have possibly
  • 17:33 - 17:35
realized the gravity of the danger
  • 17:35 - 17:37
they were in two men running through the
  • 17:37 - 17:40
shadows caught sandra and roger's eyes
  • 17:40 - 17:42
there was someone out there watching
  • 17:42 - 17:43
    roger called out to them
  • 17:43 - 17:45
maybe the place they had been in had
  • 17:45 - 17:47
    been there for my campsite
  • 17:47 - 17:49
maybe they just wanted to come back to
  • 17:49 - 17:50
    the campsite and found
  • 17:50 - 17:53
them this group of teenagers there maybe
  • 17:53 - 17:54
they had set up camp in the wrong spots
  • 17:54 - 17:56
their minds were racing but the mystery
  • 17:56 - 17:57
    men
  • 17:57 - 18:00
they gave no reply to rogers calls and
  • 18:00 - 18:02
    the sound of twigs snapping
  • 18:02 - 18:05
stopped maybe they'd left the fire
  • 18:05 - 18:07
dwindled as the group once again
  • 18:07 - 18:10
stood in fear noticing this the group of
  • 18:10 - 18:12
five decided that they really needed to
  • 18:12 - 18:13
find more dead wood to keep the fire
  • 18:13 - 18:14
    going so
  • 18:14 - 18:17
they could continue that evening and so
  • 18:17 - 18:19
roger and sandra walked off towards the
  • 18:19 - 18:20
    tree line
  • 18:20 - 18:21
though as they left the safety of the
  • 18:21 - 18:23
    campfire's lights
  • 18:23 - 18:25
sandra and roger saw movement from
  • 18:25 - 18:27
within the darkness of the trees
  • 18:27 - 18:29
roger yells into the cold air that
  • 18:29 - 18:31
rushed between the trees and the forest
  • 18:31 - 18:34
who are you what do you want and once
  • 18:34 - 18:34
    again
  • 18:34 - 18:37
roger's calls were met with silence and
  • 18:37 - 18:40
then the sound of crumpling leaves
  • 18:40 - 18:42
and suddenly two men emerged from the
  • 18:42 - 18:43
    forest and ran
  • 18:43 - 18:45
to a large rock some 20 feet from roger
  • 18:45 - 18:46
    and sandra
  • 18:46 - 18:49
followed closely by another dark figure
  • 18:49 - 18:51
sandra was able to get a better look at
  • 18:51 - 18:52
    the figures
  • 18:52 - 18:54
and her stomach dropped with fear when
  • 18:54 - 18:56
she realized what they were carrying
  • 18:56 - 18:59
guns two shots suddenly rang out across
  • 18:59 - 19:00
    the campsite
  • 19:00 - 19:02
    echoing through the surrounding forest
  • 19:02 - 19:03
    and the group scattered
  • 19:03 - 19:06
mike dragged sandra to a sheer drop a
  • 19:06 - 19:07
    drop that was just off
  • 19:07 - 19:09
at the river's edge and told it to
  • 19:09 - 19:12
shield herself behind a tree there
  • 19:12 - 19:14
the fear of death froze sandra she
  • 19:14 - 19:16
    wasn't sure where roger went
  • 19:16 - 19:17
she only knew that mike was the only
  • 19:17 - 19:19
thing between her and these mysterious
  • 19:19 - 19:20
    attackers
  • 19:20 - 19:22
everything had happened so quickly one
  • 19:22 - 19:24
minute she was standing with roger
  • 19:24 - 19:27
then there was a gunshot another gunshot
  • 19:27 - 19:28
and mike had dragged her behind this
  • 19:28 - 19:30
tree it all happened so quickly she
  • 19:30 - 19:33
hadn't had time to process it sandra
  • 19:33 - 19:34
    appeared into the campsites
  • 19:34 - 19:37
tears streaming down her face and she
  • 19:37 - 19:38
    saw roger flinch
  • 19:38 - 19:41
as another gunshot wrung out across the
  • 19:41 - 19:42
    campsite
  • 19:42 - 19:44
she saw roger collapse to the ground
  • 19:44 - 19:45
    like a bag of sand
  • 19:45 - 19:47
falling to the floor and sandra knew
  • 19:47 - 19:49
    instantly that roger
  • 19:49 - 19:51
had been hit another shot was fired
  • 19:51 - 19:52
    hitting stew
  • 19:52 - 19:54
directly stew fell to the floor in
  • 19:54 - 19:56
    agonizing pain
  • 19:56 - 19:57
his brother donna called out to him
  • 19:57 - 20:00
trying to comfort his older sibling
  • 20:00 - 20:02
stu's moans of pain filled the cold
  • 20:02 - 20:03
    november air
  • 20:03 - 20:05
the only sounds that sandra could hear
  • 20:05 - 20:07
it was as if the entire forest had
  • 20:07 - 20:08
    fallen silent
  • 20:08 - 20:10
holding his breath with just as much
  • 20:10 - 20:12
    fear as that which filled
  • 20:12 - 20:14
sandra sandra pressed herself tightly to
  • 20:14 - 20:15
    the tree
  • 20:15 - 20:17
imagining herself as becoming one with
  • 20:17 - 20:19
the tree and began praying that the men
  • 20:19 - 20:20
    would go
  • 20:20 - 20:22
away for it to stop for the nightmare to
  • 20:22 - 20:24
    end the three men
  • 20:24 - 20:25
turned their attention to the tree that
  • 20:25 - 20:27
sandra was hiding behind with mike
  • 20:27 - 20:30
and focus their guns on the pair and in
  • 20:30 - 20:32
    silence
  • 20:32 - 20:33
silence that seemed to go on for years
  • 20:33 - 20:35
    with each heartbeat
  • 20:35 - 20:38
feeling like an eternity passing it was
  • 20:38 - 20:40
about 11 pm when the silence was broken
  • 20:40 - 20:41
    by a voice calling out
  • 20:41 - 20:44
quite we're with the police come out
  • 20:44 - 20:46
with your hands up but nobody dared to
  • 20:46 - 20:46
    move
  • 20:46 - 20:48
the only sounds coming from stu are
  • 20:48 - 20:50
    moaning in pain
  • 20:50 - 20:52
the voice is called out again quote
  • 20:52 - 20:53
    we're with the police
  • 20:53 - 20:55
come out with your hands up mike
  • 20:55 - 20:57
whispered to sandra telling her that
  • 20:57 - 20:59
those cops had already shot at them
  • 20:59 - 21:01
and telling her not to run sandra and
  • 21:01 - 21:03
mike rose their hands and emerged from
  • 21:03 - 21:05
behind the tree that they had shielded
  • 21:05 - 21:07
    themselves with
  • 21:07 - 21:08
mike called out to the cops telling them
  • 21:08 - 21:10
that there were two of them
  • 21:10 - 21:12
pleading for them not to shoot them he
  • 21:12 - 21:13
    then asked quote
  • 21:13 - 21:15
who the hell do you think you are
  • 21:15 - 21:17
shooting at us one of the three men
  • 21:17 - 21:19
trains their gun on mike seemingly
  • 21:19 - 21:20
angered at his question and without
  • 21:20 - 21:22
    saying a word
  • 21:22 - 21:23
he pressed the trigger the force of the
  • 21:23 - 21:25
hit threw mike backwards and onto the
  • 21:25 - 21:26
    ground
  • 21:26 - 21:28
and in fear sandra dropped to the ground
  • 21:28 - 21:30
too though she hadn't been hit
  • 21:30 - 21:32
her instinct telling her to lie down
  • 21:32 - 21:35
next to mike as if she'd been injured
  • 21:35 - 21:36
the three men then advanced towards the
  • 21:36 - 21:38
campsites with one going over to roger
  • 21:38 - 21:40
sandra prayed that they'd think that
  • 21:40 - 21:42
they were all dead and leave
  • 21:42 - 21:44
or if it really were the police they'd
  • 21:44 - 21:46
    call an ambulance
  • 21:46 - 21:48
though sandra had a deep feeling that
  • 21:48 - 21:49
    these three men were lying
  • 21:49 - 21:51
that they weren't with the police at all
  • 21:51 - 21:53
after a short while the three men
  • 21:53 - 21:55
approached mike and sandra the pair laid
  • 21:55 - 21:56
    on the ground
  • 21:56 - 21:58
as still as possible believing any
  • 21:58 - 22:00
    movements could result in another
  • 22:00 - 22:00
    gunshot
  • 22:00 - 22:02
one of the men walked up to mike and
  • 22:02 - 22:04
kicked him hard in the lower back
  • 22:04 - 22:06
causing mike to clutch his injured
  • 22:06 - 22:08
shoulder sandra flinched as one of the
  • 22:08 - 22:09
    men
  • 22:09 - 22:11
shouted that she was playing dead before
  • 22:11 - 22:13
demanding they both stand up the pain
  • 22:13 - 22:15
mike must have been enduring as he rose
  • 22:15 - 22:17
to his feet after receiving a gunshot
  • 22:17 - 22:18
    wound
  • 22:18 - 22:20
is impossible to imagine and in spite of
  • 22:20 - 22:21
    this pain
  • 22:21 - 22:23
mike did stand up with sandra by his
  • 22:23 - 22:24
    side at some point
  • 22:24 - 22:27
the men had retrieved donna and brought
  • 22:27 - 22:29
him to where mike and sandra were
  • 22:29 - 22:30
and he was stood there with his hands up
  • 22:30 - 22:32
in the air too are they going to put us
  • 22:32 - 22:34
in the back of a police car now
  • 22:34 - 22:36
sandra thought but at some deep level
  • 22:36 - 22:38
she knew that they weren't going to
  • 22:38 - 22:40
quote let's take them this way boss one
  • 22:40 - 22:42
of the men said this is a drug raid
  • 22:42 - 22:44
don't make any sudden movements do
  • 22:44 - 22:46
    exactly as you're told
  • 22:46 - 22:48
the man who sandra presumed to be the
  • 22:48 - 22:50
boss demanded while he trained his gun
  • 22:50 - 22:52
on them they ordered donna to stand next
  • 22:52 - 22:53
    to sandra and mike
  • 22:53 - 22:55
and then motioned for them to turn
  • 22:55 - 22:57
around the boss then pointed to a small
  • 22:57 - 22:58
    dirt path that led
  • 22:58 - 23:00
deep into the woods and told the three
  • 23:00 - 23:02
    teenagers to follow
  • 23:02 - 23:04
that trail though the actual trail was
  • 23:04 - 23:06
in the other direction the three began
  • 23:06 - 23:07
    walking down the dirt path
  • 23:07 - 23:09
guns trained on them from behind until
  • 23:09 - 23:11
they came to a ledge that overlooks the
  • 23:11 - 23:13
big six river the boss then
  • 23:13 - 23:15
quietly spoke with the other men before
  • 23:15 - 23:18
telling the three teens to continue on
  • 23:18 - 23:20
down the dirt path after a while of
  • 23:20 - 23:22
walking mike asked the men whether they
  • 23:22 - 23:23
    could put their hands down
  • 23:23 - 23:26
and the three men agreed mike walked
  • 23:26 - 23:28
next to sandra and asked her whether she
  • 23:28 - 23:29
    could help him walk
  • 23:29 - 23:31
she wrapped her arms around his waist to
  • 23:31 - 23:33
help support him as the three teens
  • 23:33 - 23:35
    continued down the dirt path
  • 23:35 - 23:37
with the three gun yielding men behind
  • 23:37 - 23:39
    them eventually
  • 23:39 - 23:41
mike fell to his knees and began to lay
  • 23:41 - 23:43
down the pain of his injuries
  • 23:43 - 23:45
overcoming him mike told sandra that he
  • 23:45 - 23:46
    couldn't feel
  • 23:46 - 23:49
or move his arm and she noticed mike's
  • 23:49 - 23:50
    uneven gasps for
  • 23:50 - 23:52
air the boss shouted at them to get up
  • 23:52 - 23:54
and keep walking and so mike rose once
  • 23:54 - 23:55
    again to his feet
  • 23:55 - 23:58
with the help of sandra and dana and the
  • 23:58 - 23:58
    walk
  • 23:58 - 24:01
continued at one point the boss asked
  • 24:01 - 24:03
them for their names and they told him
  • 24:03 - 24:04
    one by one
  • 24:04 - 24:06
they continued down the dirt trail until
  • 24:06 - 24:07
    two beams of light
  • 24:07 - 24:09
pierced through the tree line the
  • 24:09 - 24:10
    headlights of a car
  • 24:10 - 24:12
the lights grew brighter and brighter as
  • 24:12 - 24:13
    the car approached
  • 24:13 - 24:16
it was a pickup the pickup came to a
  • 24:16 - 24:16
    stop
  • 24:16 - 24:19
in front of them and another man stepped
  • 24:19 - 24:20
    out from behind the wheel
  • 24:20 - 24:23
mike begged them to let him sit down but
  • 24:23 - 24:24
they shouted at him telling him that he
  • 24:24 - 24:26
will stand or they would blow his head
  • 24:26 - 24:28
off mike then asked if the ambulance was
  • 24:28 - 24:29
    on the way
  • 24:29 - 24:31
the boss said yeah before asking them
  • 24:31 - 24:34
for their names ages and identification
  • 24:34 - 24:36
only donna had identification on him
  • 24:36 - 24:37
which the men grabbed from him
  • 24:37 - 24:39
before asking how many girls there were
  • 24:39 - 24:40
    with them
  • 24:40 - 24:42
all of them looked at sandra and her
  • 24:42 - 24:44
    stomach flipped
  • 24:44 - 24:45
one of the men then ordered the three
  • 24:45 - 24:47
teens to sit in a tight circle on the
  • 24:47 - 24:48
    ground
  • 24:48 - 24:50
the boss rummaged around within the
  • 24:50 - 24:51
pickup truck for a short while
  • 24:51 - 24:54
before merging with a roll of thin grey
  • 24:54 - 24:56
wire which he said they'd use
  • 24:56 - 24:58
instead of handcuffs he explains with a
  • 24:58 - 24:59
    look of pleasure
  • 24:59 - 25:01
that the grey wire would cut the hell
  • 25:01 - 25:03
    out of their hands
  • 25:03 - 25:04
the men first tied up sandra's hands
  • 25:04 - 25:06
with the wire cutting into her skin
  • 25:06 - 25:08
they ordered sandra to get into the
  • 25:08 - 25:10
pickup truck but quickly realized that
  • 25:10 - 25:11
    the makeshift hand curves were
  • 25:11 - 25:13
preventing her from being able to
  • 25:13 - 25:15
lift herself up into the vehicle so one
  • 25:15 - 25:16
of the men picked her up
  • 25:16 - 25:19
and literally threw her in once sandra
  • 25:19 - 25:20
    was in the truck
  • 25:20 - 25:21
one of the men told her that they were
  • 25:21 - 25:23
going to try and get her off the hook
  • 25:23 - 25:25
and out of there before the sheriff
  • 25:25 - 25:27
arrives and when sandra asked him to
  • 25:27 - 25:29
    remove the wire handcuffs
  • 25:29 - 25:30
they agreed it's important to note that
  • 25:30 - 25:32
    these men were still
  • 25:32 - 25:34
    posing as police officers throughout
  • 25:34 - 25:35
    this and
  • 25:35 - 25:38
they kind of kept up this fantasy role
  • 25:38 - 25:39
    play that they were
  • 25:39 - 25:42
cops sandra scanned the inside of the
  • 25:42 - 25:43
    vehicle
  • 25:43 - 25:44
and saw nothing to indicate that the men
  • 25:44 - 25:46
were working for the police force at
  • 25:46 - 25:49
all no badges no normal handcuffs
  • 25:49 - 25:50
    something wasn't adding up
  • 25:50 - 25:53
she then asked the men about roger is he
  • 25:53 - 25:54
    all right
  • 25:54 - 25:55
they told him that he'll be fine and
  • 25:55 - 25:57
that he was only hit with a tranquilizer
  • 25:57 - 25:59
gun before slamming the door to the
  • 25:59 - 25:59
    pickup
  • 25:59 - 26:02
closed sandra was now separated from
  • 26:02 - 26:03
    donna and mike
  • 26:03 - 26:05
and that glimmer of safety that they had
  • 26:05 - 26:06
    provided her
  • 26:06 - 26:08
had been shattered after a short while
  • 26:08 - 26:10
the boss climbed into the driver's seat
  • 26:10 - 26:12
of the pickup truck and began to drive
  • 26:12 - 26:13
    her down the dirt road
  • 26:13 - 26:15
away from donna and mike when she
  • 26:15 - 26:16
    glanced back behind them
  • 26:16 - 26:19
she saw donna mike and stu being forced
  • 26:19 - 26:21
at gunpoint to walk down the road by the
  • 26:21 - 26:22
    other men
  • 26:22 - 26:24
one of the men had gone back to the
  • 26:24 - 26:25
campsite and ordered stu to get to his
  • 26:25 - 26:28
feet and walk down to where they were
  • 26:28 - 26:30
sandra locked eyes with donna as the
  • 26:30 - 26:32
    truck left the nature preserve
  • 26:32 - 26:33
and then they were gone the men that had
  • 26:33 - 26:35
stayed with the teenagers ordered them
  • 26:35 - 26:36
    to stop
  • 26:36 - 26:38
walking and after a while stu's a van
  • 26:38 - 26:40
    drove up towards them
  • 26:40 - 26:42
with one of the men behind the wheel the
  • 26:42 - 26:44
men climbed into the van and had a brief
  • 26:44 - 26:46
    conversation before departing it
  • 26:46 - 26:48
shotguns trained on the teens without a
  • 26:48 - 26:50
second thought one of the men
  • 26:50 - 26:53
aimed at 14 year old dana and fired the
  • 26:53 - 26:55
shot tore through his body throwing him
  • 26:55 - 26:56
    to the ground
  • 26:56 - 26:57
before stew could have reacted to the
  • 26:57 - 26:59
    attack on his younger brother
  • 26:59 - 27:02
two more shots rang out both shots hit
  • 27:02 - 27:02
    stew
  • 27:02 - 27:05
throwing him to the ground too mike was
  • 27:05 - 27:06
    the only one left standing
  • 27:06 - 27:08
and the men's attention quickly turned
  • 27:08 - 27:11
towards him the star athlete of his
  • 27:11 - 27:11
    school
  • 27:11 - 27:13
a teenager with so much potential would
  • 27:13 - 27:14
    never compete
  • 27:14 - 27:18
again a shot rang out hitting mike
  • 27:18 - 27:21
donna stew and mike lane motionless
  • 27:21 - 27:23
murders the men climbed into stu's van
  • 27:23 - 27:24
    and took off
  • 27:24 - 27:26
the boss continued to drive sandra
  • 27:26 - 27:28
around for a while before stopping for
  • 27:28 - 27:30
gas and being joined by the other two
  • 27:30 - 27:30
    men
  • 27:30 - 27:32
eventually they came to a stop at a
  • 27:32 - 27:34
farmhouse where they stayed for a few
  • 27:34 - 27:36
hours before the boss decided that
  • 27:36 - 27:38
sandra was too young to get busted and
  • 27:38 - 27:39
    took her home
  • 27:39 - 27:41
it is important to note um and i'm not
  • 27:41 - 27:42
    going to go into
  • 27:42 - 27:44
heavy detail here that at some point
  • 27:44 - 27:46
    when sandra was in
  • 27:46 - 27:48
the was being kidnapped by these three
  • 27:48 - 27:49
    men
  • 27:49 - 27:51
she was raped when sandra was dropped
  • 27:51 - 27:53
off sandra raced into her house and
  • 27:53 - 27:55
    slammed the door behind her
  • 27:55 - 27:57
she raced into her brother bob's bedroom
  • 27:57 - 27:59
and woke him up telling him
  • 27:59 - 28:01
the entire story bob told her that they
  • 28:01 - 28:03
had to call the police because whoever
  • 28:03 - 28:04
    those men were
  • 28:04 - 28:06
weren't cops but sandra was scared that
  • 28:06 - 28:08
they now knew where she lived and if
  • 28:08 - 28:09
    they were real cops
  • 28:09 - 28:12
then that could be a death sentence bob
  • 28:12 - 28:14
told sandra to sleep on it
  • 28:14 - 28:16
and so she went to bed and tried to
  • 28:16 - 28:18
sleep when she awoke at 9 a.m
  • 28:18 - 28:20
sandra raced to the telephone and began
  • 28:20 - 28:23
ringing raj's house but nobody answered
  • 28:23 - 28:25
eventually somebody picked up the phone
  • 28:25 - 28:26
roger's mother who told sandra that
  • 28:26 - 28:28
    roger hadn't come home
  • 28:28 - 28:30
sandra then spoke to one of roger's
  • 28:30 - 28:31
brothers and began to tell him about
  • 28:31 - 28:33
what had happened the night before
  • 28:33 - 28:35
what sandra didn't know already was that
  • 28:35 - 28:38
roger's family had already been told by
  • 28:38 - 28:38
    the police
  • 28:38 - 28:40
that he had been found dead and roger's
  • 28:40 - 28:42
brother asked sandra whether he could
  • 28:42 - 28:42
    come
  • 28:42 - 28:44
pick her up roger's brother took sandra
  • 28:44 - 28:46
to the police station to speak to a
  • 28:46 - 28:47
    detective
  • 28:47 - 28:49
    the police interviewed sandra taking
  • 28:49 - 28:51
statements and quickly formed a unit to
  • 28:51 - 28:53
    investigate what happened
  • 28:53 - 28:56
the bodies of stu roger mike and donna
  • 28:56 - 28:59
were recovered and taken for autopsies
  • 28:59 - 29:01
roger essem who was 17 years old when he
  • 29:01 - 29:02
    was murdered
  • 29:02 - 29:04
has sustained to multiple wounds to the
  • 29:04 - 29:06
head face upper chest and arms
  • 29:06 - 29:09
he had seven exit winds skull fractures
  • 29:09 - 29:11
    and damage to his brain
  • 29:11 - 29:13
stuart baid who had been 18 years old
  • 29:13 - 29:14
    when he was murdered
  • 29:14 - 29:16
has sustained wounds to the chest
  • 29:16 - 29:18
    abdomen and right upper leg
  • 29:18 - 29:20
he had extensive winds to his left hand
  • 29:20 - 29:22
and a large gaping wound in the middle
  • 29:22 - 29:24
    of his back
  • 29:24 - 29:26
mike hadrith had been 15 years old when
  • 29:26 - 29:28
    he had been murdered
  • 29:28 - 29:29
he had sustained wounds to the upper
  • 29:29 - 29:31
    left chest left upper arm
  • 29:31 - 29:33
left side of his face left hand and his
  • 29:33 - 29:34
    wrist
  • 29:34 - 29:36
he had further sustained shots to his
  • 29:36 - 29:38
    back buttocks and legs
  • 29:38 - 29:39
it was determined that some of the
  • 29:39 - 29:41
wounds had been sustained as mike lay
  • 29:41 - 29:44
face down on the ground dana bade who
  • 29:44 - 29:46
had been 14 years old when he was
  • 29:46 - 29:47
    murdered
  • 29:47 - 29:49
has sustained wounds to the right chest
  • 29:49 - 29:50
    heart and back
  • 29:50 - 29:52
the police took cassandra with them on a
  • 29:52 - 29:53
    stakeout of this
  • 29:53 - 29:56
farmhouse that the men had taken sandra
  • 29:56 - 29:56
    to when
  • 29:56 - 29:59
this had all happened sandra had been
  • 29:59 - 30:01
sure to remember the route there
  • 30:01 - 30:03
and she waited with the police for any
  • 30:03 - 30:05
movement and after what seemed like
  • 30:05 - 30:07
hours a man emerged from the house
  • 30:07 - 30:10
that caused sandra to scream allen fryer
  • 30:10 - 30:12
who was 29 years old was arrested on
  • 30:12 - 30:14
    suspicion of murder
  • 30:14 - 30:17
sandra identified him as being the boss
  • 30:17 - 30:19
alan fryer initially denied having any
  • 30:19 - 30:21
    knowledge of the murders
  • 30:21 - 30:23
but eventually admitted that he had been
  • 30:23 - 30:24
    hunting pheasants that day
  • 30:24 - 30:27
in the state preserve allen's brothers
  • 30:27 - 30:29
david fry and james freya were also
  • 30:29 - 30:31
brought into custody in connection to
  • 30:31 - 30:32
    the case
  • 30:32 - 30:34
and eventually all the men began to
  • 30:34 - 30:36
point their fingers at one another
  • 30:36 - 30:37
now it is important to note that
  • 30:37 - 30:38
sandra's accounts are seeing more than
  • 30:38 - 30:39
    three men
  • 30:39 - 30:41
are difficult to establish within the
  • 30:41 - 30:43
official timeline it is suggested that
  • 30:43 - 30:44
one of the three men left the group to
  • 30:44 - 30:46
go get the pickup when the teenagers
  • 30:46 - 30:48
were forced to walk down the dirt path
  • 30:48 - 30:50
but we don't know eventually the three
  • 30:50 - 30:52
brothers implicated one another in the
  • 30:52 - 30:54
shooting and murder of the four teenage
  • 30:54 - 30:55
    boys
  • 30:55 - 30:57
they told the authorities that they had
  • 30:57 - 30:58
been hunting deer on the night that the
  • 30:58 - 31:00
    murders took place
  • 31:00 - 31:01
when they came across the youths and
  • 31:01 - 31:04
their campfire for some unknown reason
  • 31:04 - 31:06
they pretended to be narcotics officers
  • 31:06 - 31:08
    it is likely the cigarette
  • 31:08 - 31:10
that the group had shared to ease the
  • 31:10 - 31:11
    tension
  • 31:11 - 31:14
has been what they thought was marijuana
  • 31:14 - 31:16
    which they then justified
  • 31:16 - 31:18
the attack on them their motive for the
  • 31:18 - 31:20
    murders is confusing and
  • 31:20 - 31:23
obscure they acted in a way as to give a
  • 31:23 - 31:26
stance that they were narcotic officers
  • 31:26 - 31:28
getting rid of marijuana users even
  • 31:28 - 31:30
though none of the teenagers had
  • 31:30 - 31:32
    marijuana at the time
  • 31:32 - 31:34
they just decided to kill them i also
  • 31:34 - 31:35
    must heavily point out
  • 31:35 - 31:37
that possession of marijuana and the
  • 31:37 - 31:39
    usage of marijuana
  • 31:39 - 31:42
at the time does not mean you get shot
  • 31:42 - 31:43
and murdered does not justify that
  • 31:43 - 31:45
you know there is no justification for
  • 31:45 - 31:47
    murdering somebody
  • 31:47 - 31:49
you should be brought in for you know be
  • 31:49 - 31:51
    arrested brought in for questioning
  • 31:51 - 31:54
trial you know the usual justice process
  • 31:54 - 31:55
    not just a murder
  • 31:55 - 31:57
    it's such a strange motive and i
  • 31:57 - 31:59
    personally believe that
  • 31:59 - 32:00
they were truly evil and they just
  • 32:00 - 32:02
wanted to shoot something other than
  • 32:02 - 32:05
deer ultimately david fryer pled guilty
  • 32:05 - 32:07
    to the charge of murder
  • 32:07 - 32:08
but ended up actually being found guilty
  • 32:08 - 32:10
of first degree murder which is
  • 32:10 - 32:12
something that he tried to appeal but
  • 32:12 - 32:13
    failed
  • 32:13 - 32:14
david fryer was sentenced to life behind
  • 32:14 - 32:18
bars on the 27th of february 1974.
  • 32:18 - 32:20
james rayfriar on the 11th of december
  • 32:20 - 32:21
    1974
  • 32:21 - 32:23
was found guilty of the manslaughter of
  • 32:23 - 32:24
    roger essim
  • 32:24 - 32:27
and of first degree murder of mike stew
  • 32:27 - 32:29
    and donna he too
  • 32:29 - 32:31
tried to appeal the sentence but failed
  • 32:31 - 32:33
he was sentenced to life behind bars
  • 32:33 - 32:35
    without the possibility of parole
  • 32:35 - 32:38
and finally alan fryer was found guilty
  • 32:38 - 32:40
for four counts of first-degree murder
  • 32:40 - 32:43
on the 11th of august 1974 and he too
  • 32:43 - 32:45
tried to appeal his conviction but
  • 32:45 - 32:47
failed he was sentenced to life in
  • 32:47 - 32:49
prison without the possibility of parole
  • 32:49 - 32:52
all three brothers remain behind bars to
  • 32:52 - 32:52
    this day
  • 32:52 - 32:54
now this case has relied heavily on the

by sandra in the book gichi girl by phil
