MYOO Articulate 3° 17' S, 52° 12' W Belo Monte Animation
-
0:00 - 0:03MYOO, the team that brought you the Plastiki is on expedition again,
-
0:03 - 0:07this time with a unique adventure from our Articulate series,
-
0:07 - 0:09which combines art and adventure to give nature a voice.
-
0:12 - 0:16From the first of November we'll be in Brazil to visit the site of the proposed Belo Monte dam,
-
0:16 - 0:20which is a hugely ambitious and controversial hydroelectric project,
-
0:20 - 0:23that will divert flow of the mighty Xingu River.
-
0:23 - 0:27The Brazilian goverment is adamant that the dam is necessary to safeguard the economic future
-
0:27 - 0:29of all of Brazil, but many people disagree.
-
0:30 - 0:32The Belo Monte actually consists of three dams,
-
0:32 - 0:37the principle one of which will be located at the head of the Volta Grande, or Big Bend section of the river,
-
0:37 - 0:42where it will divert 80% of the river's flow into a manmade canal
-
0:42 - 0:45that will feed the giant turbines in the second dam.
-
0:45 - 0:48In the process of generating this vast store of potential energy,
-
0:48 - 0:54the dam will create an enormous reservoir, that will reach back as far as the town of Altamira,
-
0:54 - 0:57and inundate many thousands of acres of rainforest.
-
0:57 - 1:02For many people, the creation of this lake is indicative of why they are against the project,
-
1:02 - 1:05which they believe is driven more by ego than simple common sense.
-
1:06 - 1:11For instance, it is commonly anticipated that the acres and acres of forest that will be flooded
-
1:11 - 1:15will begin to rot and release hundreds of thousands of tons of methane into the atmosphere,
-
1:15 - 1:19making this dam no cleaner in its emissions than a coal-fired power station.
-
1:21 - 1:25In the town of Altamira, the flood waters are expected to reach deep into the favelas,
-
1:25 - 1:28displacing many of the poorest and most vulnerable,
-
1:28 - 1:33and in the process, compounding issues such as illegal logging and ranching that people will be forced into
-
1:33 - 1:35as they struggle to rebuild their lives.
-
1:36 - 1:41But perhaps one of the saddest consequences of all is what will happen to the people of the Volta Grande,
-
1:41 - 1:43who like so many other indigenous people
-
1:43 - 1:46will be willfully deprived of the resources that they fight so hard
-
1:46 - 1:48to preserve for the benefit for all of us.
-
1:49 - 1:54It is predicted that the diversion of up to 80% of the Xingu's normal flow
-
1:54 - 1:56will cause a permanent drought on the Volta Grande.
-
1:57 - 2:02This will effectively deprive the region's Juruna and Waura peoples of their livelihood
-
2:02 - 2:04and force their displacement.
-
2:05 - 2:10MYOO is going to travel to the Volta Grande to spend time with the diverse group of people who live there
-
2:10 - 2:15and celebrate with them now what may surely be lost for future generations.
-
2:15 - 2:20We intend to team up with the children in these communities and build a giant folk totem,
-
2:20 - 2:25which we'll decorate with carvings that celebrate the unique biodiversity of the region.
-
2:26 - 2:30We'll then take the totem and place it in the river at the dam site,
-
2:30 - 2:36where it will stand as a celebration of what may be lost as well as a representation of a Juruna ancestral myth.

MYOO, the team that brought you the Plastiki is on expedition again. This time on a unique adventure into the Brazilian Amazon which combines art and adventure to shed light on a hugely ambitious and controversial hydroelectric project. Is the dam a safeguard for the Brazilian people's future? Or a grave threat to the health of the Amazon? Watch our animation to learn more about the expedition, the Belo Monte Dam and what MYOO hopes to achieve on the ground.
