'That was a newborn baby': CNN reporter reveals dire situation at airport

  • Not Synced
    After three weeks in Afghanistan,
  • Not Synced
we join the crowds at Kabul Airport.
  • Not Synced
    Now, the only way
    out of the country.
  • Not Synced
There is a huge block here.
    Lots of cars.
  • Not Synced
    Hundreds of people wait
    in the blistering heat,
  • Not Synced
    hoping for a flight out.
  • Not Synced
    So, we just managed
to get into the airport compound,
  • Not Synced
and uh, I have to say,
  • Not Synced
    it was pretty intense.
  • Not Synced
    It was just, like,
    this crush of desperate people,
  • Not Synced
    and screaming children,
  • Not Synced
    and women and babies,
  • Not Synced
    and um, yeah.
  • Not Synced
    It's not often you see
    desperation like that.
  • Not Synced
The few people that do make it
  • Not Synced
    are exhausted and scared.
  • Not Synced
But, they are the lucky ones.
  • Not Synced
    They've made it past
    the Taliban checkpoints,
  • Not Synced
    Afghan security guards,
  • Not Synced
    and, finally, the airport gate.
  • Not Synced
    But, they can't forget those
    who they left behind.
  • Not Synced
    We are getting out.
    We are happy for that.
  • Not Synced
    But we are heartbroken
    for our country,
  • Not Synced
especially those who can't get out,
  • Not Synced
    those who are stuck here.
  • Not Synced
    We are really heartbroken.
  • Not Synced
    Our heart bleeds for them.
  • Not Synced
What do you feel for all the mothers,
  • Not Synced
with young daughters who will now
  • Not Synced
be growing up under Taliban rule?
  • Not Synced
    Pain. Lots of pain.
  • Not Synced
    [Airplane engine roars.]
  • Not Synced
The back of a pretty long line now.
  • Not Synced
    Uh, transportation is under strain,
    they said.
  • Not Synced
    Obviously, the priority
  • Not Synced
    is getting children and babies
    out, as soon as possible.
  • Not Synced
But, I think we will probably
    be here quite a while.
  • Not Synced
Do you work for the U. S. military?
  • Not Synced
    Not military, but we are
  • Not Synced
working with the Ministry of Defense
    in Afghanistan.
  • Not Synced
    But we also work with
    foreign people, too.
  • Not Synced
    So you have a visa?
  • Not Synced
    Yes. We have documents,
    and a visa, too.
  • Not Synced
    As we interview this couple,
  • Not Synced
    suddenly (there are)
    shouts behind us.
  • Not Synced
    A vehicle speeds through.
  • Not Synced
    [Car engine sputters past.]
  • Not Synced
    That's a newborn baby.
  • Not Synced
    That just flew past,
    in that vehicle.
  • Not Synced
    That was a newborn.
    Did you see the baby?
  • Not Synced
    It was this big.
  • Not Synced
    The baby, we find out,
    has heat stroke,
  • Not Synced
    and needs treatment.
  • Not Synced
    A reminder, for these families,
that they are close to safety,
  • Not Synced
    but not there, yet.
  • Not Synced
We stand in the blazing hot sun
    for hours,
  • Not Synced
everyone seeking what shelter they can.
  • Not Synced
    [Child screaming, crying.]
  • Not Synced
    Patience wearing thin.
  • Not Synced
    It's an agonizingly slow process,
    but finally, we're allowed inside.
  • Not Synced
Out on the tarmac, now safe,
    but the chaos continues.
  • Not Synced
I have been waiting for two days.
  • Not Synced
    Yesterday, since 3 a. m.
  • Not Synced
    Yesterday since 3 a. m.?
  • Not Synced
    Yes.
  • Not Synced
Tell me what the situation was like,
  • Not Synced
trying to get in to the airport.
  • Not Synced
It was really busy, and a lot of people
  • Not Synced
were just fighting, and trying to
    make way for themselves.
  • Not Synced
    But, we pushed through.
  • Not Synced
    We are certainly some of
    the very lucky ones, here.
  • Not Synced
    Others, as you heard
    from that young man,
  • Not Synced
have been waiting for two days.
  • Not Synced
Others we saw getting turned around,
    sent back.
  • Not Synced
    Told, "you don't have the
    appropriate paperwork."
  • Not Synced
    There is no question:
everybody here is doing their best.
  • Not Synced
    But, it's not clear
    if it's fast enough.
  • Not Synced
If enough people can get out.
  • Not Synced
And how much longer they have,
    to finish this massive operation.
  • Not Synced
I want to bring in CNN's
    Clarissa Ward.
  • Not Synced
    She is on the phone,
    inside the Kabul airport.
  • Not Synced
    Clarissa, the Pentagon, today,
  • Not Synced
    put out several images
  • Not Synced
that really get at the humanity,
    the sea of humanity there,
  • Not Synced
    and the compassion of
  • Not Synced
    the U. S. service members
    at the airport.
  • Not Synced
You saw, of course, the Marine
    holding the baby.
  • Not Synced
    Another, 'fist bumping' the child
    going through processing.
  • Not Synced
The lines of Marines on guard,
    directing a woman and child
  • Not Synced
    where to go for processing.
  • Not Synced
    Obviously, everyone doing
the best they can, as you noted.
  • Not Synced
    The scene inside the perimeter,
    strikingly different
  • Not Synced
than the one outside the gates.
  • Not Synced
Yeah, Jake. I mean, there is no question
  • Not Synced
    that everybody here is just
    doing their level best
  • Not Synced
    to try to mitigate the
    suffering and misery
  • Not Synced
    of the situation.
  • Not Synced
    We also saw, I saw,
  • Not Synced
    a young female soldier
  • Not Synced
    carrying an Afghan toddler boy.
  • Not Synced
    I've seen people
    helping those in wheelchairs.
  • Not Synced
All sorts of acts of kindness
    and gentleness.
  • Not Synced
    But, the reality is
    that this situation
  • Not Synced
    is horrifying.
  • Not Synced
    I'm looking around now,
    at a sea of people
  • Not Synced
    lying on the floor.
  • Not Synced
    They are lying outside
    on the gravel.
  • Not Synced
    There is nowhere
    for them to sleep
  • Not Synced
    other than a cardboard box.
  • Not Synced
They are cold. It's very chilly.
  • Not Synced
    There is no blanket.
  • Not Synced
    The bathrooms here are
in a very bad state indeed.
  • Not Synced
    And there is no sense
    of how long these people
  • Not Synced
    are going to be here.
  • Not Synced
    For over eight hours today,
no U. S. planes even left.
  • Not Synced
    So, there is now
    even more of a backlog,
  • Not Synced
and a bottleneck, than there was.
  • Not Synced
Is there any sense of order,
  • Not Synced
    when it comes to
    the effort to determine
  • Not Synced
who gets to come into the gates,
  • Not Synced
    that last perimeter
    where the U. S. is?
  • Not Synced
    And who does not?
  • Not Synced
I think, in the initial process...
  • Not Synced
you know, there is so many
    nodes, along this chain...
  • Not Synced
    initially, it's sort of like,
  • Not Synced
    who can flash a document
    In the air,
  • Not Synced
and who can push the hardest.
  • Not Synced
    Who has a young baby,
    and something like that.
  • Not Synced
    Or (who) is vulnerable,
    and at immediate risk.
  • Not Synced
    Then, as you get further
    along the chain,
  • Not Synced
and closer to the air field,
  • Not Synced
    you go to State Department
    processing.
  • Not Synced
And you really do have to show
    the appropriate paperwork.
  • Not Synced
And that is where we saw
  • Not Synced
    quite a few people
    being turned around.
  • Not Synced
They are all sort of manually
    escorted off the base.
  • Not Synced
    It does break your heart
a little bit, to see that.
  • Not Synced
    Because, you can imagine,
    you know,
  • Not Synced
you don't have all your paperwork
    in order,
  • Not Synced
    but you are still petrified
    of the situation.
  • Not Synced
    Ugh! To get that far,
    and get in,
  • Not Synced
and still not be able to get out
    of the country,
  • Not Synced
    after all of that.
  • Not Synced
    It's a heartbreak.
  • Not Synced
    Jake, I'm walking outside now,
  • Not Synced
    because I am being told
    that our birds, our flights,
  • Not Synced
    are taking off soon.
  • Not Synced
So, forgive me if I'm a little loud.
  • Not Synced
    Okay. That certainly takes priority,
    Clarissa.
  • Not Synced
    We have seen images
    of armed U. S. forces,
  • Not Synced
along the perimeter of the airport,
    and all week,
  • Not Synced
    the Pentagon has said,
    that U. S. troops
  • Not Synced
    have not been involved in
any hostile interactions at the airport.
  • Not Synced
But, of course, any wrong move
    could quickly change the situation.
  • Not Synced
    I have to believe
  • Not Synced
that that is one of the considerations,
  • Not Synced
as to why U. S. service members have been
  • Not Synced
basically told to stay where they are,
    within the perimeter,
  • Not Synced
because of the real, legitimate risk
    to service members,
  • Not Synced
    from not just the Taliban,
  • Not Synced
    but any one of
the terrorist groups in the area.
  • Not Synced
    [Clarissa] There are so many
    different threats, here.
  • Not Synced
    So many different
    potential scenarios,
  • Not Synced
    where things could rapidly escalate
to a very, very bad place.
  • Not Synced
    That's why there is
a lot of tension in the air.
  • Not Synced
    Because everybody knows
    that this moment cannot last.
  • Not Synced
It is going to be short-lived.
  • Not Synced
And they have got to get it right.
  • Not Synced
And they have got to get out
as many people as they possibly can.
  • Not Synced
    Because they can't just
    go outside the wire,
  • Not Synced
and start bringing people in manually.
  • Not Synced
This is why the negotiations with
    the Taliban are so important.
  • Not Synced
But the Taliban has a limit
to how much they will tolerate.
  • Not Synced
And a limit to how much those
    surly, surly fighters
  • Not Synced
    on the outer perimeter
    will tolerate.
